Antidepressants and pregnancy

Hi March Mamas! I just got my BFP with child number 2 and recently went on lexapro for my depression and anxiety. I've been on it a month and was feeling so much better and got nervous about having to come off of it now that I'm pregnant. I saw my OB early (5 weeks today) and she gave me the go ahead to stay on the lexapro. I am relieved to say the least but curious if any other moms are on antidepressants or have been while pregnant? Any up or downsides? Just experience in general? Would love to hear! Excited to get to know all of you! Congrats to FTM and seasoned moms alike!

  • You'll probably get some input if you post this in the  mental health thread that  was just started earlier today! :)

  • Thank you!!! I looked through to see if there was and totally missed it!
  • @riahanson My sister was given the go ahead to stay on lexapro during her pregnancy. Everything went fine, but she was told it is not known to be safe while BF, and they didn't want to take her off of it after her c-section (breech) obviously because of the PPD risk. So she was unable to BF her daughter. THAT SAID, the pregnancy was 100% fine, and my niece is now a very healthy, energetic and smart 8 year old. No judgment from me re: BF/not BF just wanted to let you know  :)

Ultimately, I'm no expert and your doctor knows better than me. But, since you asked, I looked it up (I do like the Ovia pregnancy app for food and drug safety info). It lists it as a category C which means that there have been some adverse effects in animal reproduction studies. But, depending on where you're at, sometimes it's worth the risk to keep you safe.
