This thread seemed to get positive feedback last week, so thought I'd keep it going. Please feel free to share any articles you think the BMB might like to see.
My mom (who seems to thoroughly enjoy sending me semi-scary pregnancy articles) just shared this one with me. I'm trying to not over do it with my sugar intake, but this did make me want to buckle down and try a little harder...
TL;DR- They stopped telling women to push in labor and just encouraged them to allow their body to do what it needs to do and saw a significant decrease in 3rd and 4th degree tearing.
@kvacmak That approach to delivery makes so much more sense and seems like a much more natural way to give birth! Since I'm having twins I have a high likelihood of having a C-section, but if not, I'm pretty worried about the tearing... I'm going to be delivering at Yale New Haven Hospital, which is supposed to be one of the best hospitals in the country for maternity services and neonatal care, so hopefully they follow this approach!
@leilagphillips from what I understand and my experience with DS the secret is to learn to relax your pelvic floor ahead of time and DO NOT PUSH WHEN THEY'RE CROWNING. Let your uterus do the work. I remember reading about perineal massage when I was pregnant with DS and thinking it was absolutely ridiculous, but now I realize it's nothing to do with manually loosening it up, and more about learning how to relax those muscles against pressure!
