First time mom wanting to breastfeed

I would really like to try to breastfeed. Everyone in my family has used formula instead. So not sure on how to find the right breast pump for me. Any suggestions?

  • Find someone - from a local chapter of La Leche League or a LC or your hospital's class or a local mom - to help you. You will have struggles and you will have questions and if you don't have support, there's a good chance it won't turn out the way you want.

  • Yes, make sure you have a strong support system around you! I had so many issues and everyone around me was saying to just give him formula. But you could be a lucky one where breastfeeding is a breeze too. You just never know.
  • @kmb17 I am also a FTM wanting to breastfeed. This is some info that may help.
If you know where you plan on delivering, they may offer classes and/or a lactation consultant. Ask your doctor for info on classes or support systems for breastfeeding. Mine had a brochure for classes offered through the hospital he delivers at. If you're delivering at a hospital, they may offer discounts for classes- I had to sign up for the free program to get the discounted rates.

I checked out my insurance plan website and found out that they cover a LC, and a breast pump. Hope this helps.  :)
  • I second finding a good class through the hospital.  There are a lot of local resources given through those classes.  A strong support system is important.  Also, kellymom.com  is an awesome resource.  Best of luck to you!  As far as a pump, check insurance first.  Then read reviews.  I'd try to go with insurance first instead of buying an expensive one in case you don't respond well to a pump.  Also, those nursing pads will be your best friend.  I was a leaker and it can get embarrassing!

DS1 is 7.  DD is 1.  DS2 is coming in late April.

  • @kmb17 did you find a class? I just registered for one through our hospital. I go in October so I hope baby doesn't come early, but I figure if he does come early I can still go and bring him with.
  • Definitely find a local La Leche League or other breastfeeding moms group - BEFORE you deliver. With DD I just read a book (the LLL book The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding) and used the hospital lactation consultant and neither helped enough, so when I was having latching problems I was at a loss and overwhelmed and was pressured by the pediatrician to supplement. By the time I had given up and resorted to formula and (ineffective) pumping when she was about 2 weeks old, I then met a few local moms who were LLL members who had tons of great advice that, had I had that advice a few weeks prior, might have saved my breastfeeding.

  • I took a class prior to birth but I would recommend finding a Lactation Consultant...your OB may have one or your Peds office. We used the LC at our Ped and she was so helpful! I credit her with our BF/Pumping success.
  • This post was a driveby. The original poster hasn't been back since the day it was posted.  :#
It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*

  • Our hospital has LCs on hand at delivery. They said she'll meet with me after delivery. In addition to going to the class a month before I'm due. I hope the LC from the hospital can help at home as well.
  • You would think by third trimester time we would be mostly free from drive bys
