I really couldn't find an appropriate place for this, so I'm starting a thread for interesting and pertinent articles relating to child birth.

I read this article on CNN this morning, and figured I'd share. It's regarding placenta encapsulation:

@PinkPrincessPiper I guess you shouldn't encapsulate your placenta if you test positive for strep b. My placenta will go from my vagina to the trash as I want nothing to do with it. I did hear that you can donate and they can use the tissue for some medical conditions (like burns) but my birth center doesn't have this option. I think it's funny that the article points out that one of the arguments for eating your own placenta is that it's natural and other animals do it. My dog would probably eat her placenta but she will also eat her own vomit if I let her.

@lewliv I'm thinking of donating mine, but after discussing it with my doctor. I think you have to have a c section to donate based on what I've researched.

I know the placenta encapsulation is a hot button issue, but you saying that about your dog makes me giggle. Yes, animals do eat their placentas, but it's to hide evidence of their young and keep predators away. So, yes, it's natural, but not because they're worried about PPD.

We had every intention of encapsulating until this CDC MMWR report came out. It's an isolated incident, but after talking with our midwife and doing some other research we decided that we just wouldn't take the risk. I'm at a higher risk for PPD, so thats why we wanted to encapsulate, but we'll be working with my acupuncturist post partum with treatment, herbs and nutrition to hopefully "stay ahead" of PPD without the need of my placenta.

@lewliv I have to stop my dog from eating poops on our walks on a daily basis so people using "animals do it" as an argument for things always makes me laugh.
DD pooped during labor so my placenta was filled with meconium.. yum!
