Pregnancy info go to?

Was wondering where you ladies go to get your pregnancy info. Podcasts, TV shows, books? What's your favorite and what would you reccomend to others?

Re: Pregnancy info go to?

  • I read What To Expect and Ina May's Guide To Childbirth.

The book has 2 parts and although the birth stories in Ina May's book are amazing and help dissolve fear, the second half has their "recommendations" for your birth plan, and I disagreed with half of it. So use critical thinking when you review that part.
There was one example from the book that needlessly endangered the newborn: the Birth Center they ran were against US, and when an infant was born with a life threatening cardiac defect, they rushed it to the nearest hospital relying on prayers. An anatomy scan would have enabled the mother to give birth at a hospital capable of providing immediate care.
I still recommend this book and have loaned it to friend with a caution.

Last pregnancy I texted my husband the weekly progress updates from the Bump. My DH isn't into reading, so the snippets are perfect. I've only sent him one so far this pregnancy because every other week it mentions the "hormonal/moody" and I don't need him disregarding my feelings because of some BS on the bump. If I'm pissed there's a Fn reason.

  • I like getting information from a person, the books and especially the Internet tends to contradict itself. In Canada we have two great resources. #1 is telehealth which is a phone line. You can access a registered nurse for free anytime. #2 is motherisk, also a phone line where you can access information about risks related to any drug or product use while nursing or pregnant. Is there an equivalent in the US?  For the other questions, I ask or call my midwife
  • Just wanted to note that for fun--but also some important details--I REALLY enjoyed Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy. Easy light read but also gives some of the things polite circles won't tell you about the before during and after. Again, more for fun but enjoyable :)

  • What to Expect is my bathroom book. And I'm in there a lot, so I've read most of it by now...
Me- 39 (turning 40 in April), TTC for the first time ever (since Jan 2015), low ovarian reserve
Married 3/14/14 to my wonderful wife, but her sperm count is rather low
TTC with frozen donor sperm and science

    7 IUIs, 7 BFNs.
2 IVF attempts, both cancelled and converted to IUI, both BFNs.
Decided that my tired old ovaries are ready to retire.
Next step- reciprocal IVF, using my wife's eggs, my uterus!
fresh 5 day transfer (2 embryos) 4/17/17- BFP!
Identical twins "due" 1/2/17 (but anticipated arrival sometime December)

  • @EmilyLove25 I liked the Girlfriend's Guide -- it's not a perfect book, but I'm really over books/etc that get into this whole "your body is a sacred vessel, everything you're going through is precious" stuff. So having a book that was basically an emoji shrug and "Look, you'll figure it out, here's some info" was perfect for me at the time.
  • I'm a big fan of blogs, which is a double-edged sword. I like reading people's first-hand experiences, but just because someone has had a baby doesn't mean they're an expert. For general life shit, though, blogs are pretty okay starting points if the format works for you.
  • When I was pregnant with my first I read Belly Laughs by Jenny McCarthy.  Now that is a light hearted and comical approach to pregnancy! I also enjoyed The Girlfriend Guide. But I agree with @chadyse, it is really nice to actually talk to a real person.

  • The Girlfriend's Guide was definitely a fun read. I used What to Expect, and my clinic had given me a similar book as well. A lot of my info came from my mom and MIL as well as a few acquaintances who have kids.

My favorite book is "Your Pregnancy Week by Week" because I just love knowing exactly what to expect each week and what parts the baby is developing. It's also full of great tips for pregnancy, for husbands, and has an easy exercise to do for the week. I also own "What to Expect" but I like this other one wayyyy more. I can actually sit and read each chapter with out getting bored.
