Prenatal Vitamins

Are you taking them as directed?

What brand?

Any crazy side effects?

I ask bc my midwife is pretty nonchalant about them. I'm taking rainbow and it makes my uribe electric yellow.

I will probably start Rainbow when my Nature's Bounty are gone next week. I used Rainbow through my first pregnancy and loved them. No side effects (besides the electric yellow pee). In was never constipated and usually felt pretty good through the whole pregnancy.

Edited: Becaue I didn't answer your first question. I did take them as directed. One per day!

I just take the knock off Centra materna vitamins from my local supermarket

Eta no side effects except for feeling like crap after taking them, which is standard for me

  • I was taking this whole foods prenatal and vitamin D and CoQ10 every day while doing IVF and at the beginning of my pregnancy, but now I don't want to deal with all those pills while feeling sick, so I have been taking Vitafusion gummy prenatals and Vitafusion gummy Calcium +Fiber prenatal support. Its another one of those "just surviving the first trimester" justifications I have made.

  • I compared content of centrum materna with Costco brand regular non prenatal vitamin and other than the iron the regular vitamin was better. So I just kept taking my regular vitamin and added folic acid
I also take omega 3 and vitamin D

  • I think coq10 is contraindicated in pregnancy anyways so you're doing great

I take them pretty regularly, except I forgot them when I went out of town this weekend.

I use a grocery generic that has all the same % as One a Day Prenatal plus the DHA. I stocked up when they were on sale, so maybe in a few months I'll switch to something better tasting like gummies, haha.

Take them just before bed, so don't think there are any side effects I notice.
  • I'm taking Nature Made every morning after breakfast. I've always found that any vitamin I've every used makes my pee bright yellow the first time I pee after taking it!
  • I take garden of life. They are the best quality I could find.

The only issue  I have is that they're huge and sometimes hard to swallow. I take one with every meal (as directed)

i also take a separate DHA

  • I take the Nature Made prenatal every day, just before bed because it gives me heartburn. A poster on TTGP is a chemist and told us that because vitamins are not regulated by the FDA, they aren't required to have in them what the label says, so you should stick to trusted brands. Nature Made was one that contained what it said it contained (and is certified by USP). If you do a search on TB you may be able to find the thread, I think it was about supplements.

Believe it or not... I chew 2 Flintstones with iron at night.... my OB had me do that with my first and I just always have when pregnant...
Well.... at least until second trimester ;)
  • I'm planning to order Optimal Prenatal so I don't have to take half a dozen individual pills. I take iron separately.

  • I take a Nature Made prenatal, as directed, at bedtime. I also take a Nordic Naturals Vitamin D3 and their DHA, both as directed.

  • I take Vitafol OB + DHA. It's a prescription prenatal that my doctor called into my pharmacy for me a few weeks ago. I take them as directed and can make it through the day now when I couldn't before them!
  • Are any of these smaller pills? I'm taking the generic from my grocery store, but they are big!! Would love to find a smaller one.

  • I take smartypants prenatal! Love them!

I'm taking upsring! So far love them, its 3 gummies and a soft gel (which is not big at all!). No fishy burps and hasnt upset my tummy at all!
  • HIGHLY recommend NOW Brand everything. Their prenatals don't have the icky taste, they are easy to swallow even when everything is gross and it's just one a day with a lot of DHA.

I use NOW Brand for everything... vitamins, essential oils...Everything! Really trusted brand that is well priced.

I have taken them for years even before I had my first and continue to take them every day.
  • I have hemochromatosis (iron over-loading in the body) and a MTHFR mutation that makes it hard for my body to process folate so I've been on the search for a holy grail vitamin without iron and with methylfolate instead of folic acid. So I've been taking Smarty Pants prenatal vitamin but I hate that it's a gummy and am looking for something in capsule form that doesn't cost a fortune.
  • During my first pregnancy I was able to get a prescription for prenatal,  which my local pharmacy would fill for free - I'm hoping I can get that again. . .vitamins are surprisingly expensive.
  • For my first pregnancy, I took Nature Made.  But my body couldn't handle the extra iron. Sorry if this is TMI, but I actually ended up with black stools. I went through extensive and EXPENSIVE testing thru my regular doctor because they worried I had internal bleeding. But it turned out to be my body releasing the extra iron it didn't need. So I switched to a regular multi vitamin along with fish oil.
So for this pregnancy, my doctor said that I should just start off with a prenatal without any iron. And the gummies don't have iron. So I take a gummy (can't remember the brand now). They taste great, don't make me sick, and no constipation!

garden of life raw prenatal has methylfolate, but its 3 huge pills a day! That is why I switched to smarty pants, even though the sweetness factor is so gross right now.

I recently ordered this one that contains methylfolate. It's six capsules a day. I plan to break apart three and add it to my morning smoothie, and take the other three in the afternoon.

That's what I get. I don't know the RX name but they were free I was surprised at check out when they said no price.
I'll just keep getting these. Why not

I've been taking Pregvit (not sure if that's the Canadian brand) but it is through prescription but it causes constipation so I don't take it regularly. I do take vitamin D, folic acid and calcium everyday on their own. I want to find a prenatal that doesn't cause constipation though.
  • I've been taking Spring Valley prenatal vitamins. They're the cheapest brand at Walmart. My OB told me if it is labeled prenatal then it is fine to use. I still have half a bottle from my last pregnancy that doesn't expire until 12/17 so I am using it up now. I don't notice any effects from it. I got some samples from the OB last time that had a separate fish oil pill and it made me vomit.

When I looked into that brand you still had to take three. Unless I'm mistaking it for a different NOW brand? I just looked again and still says three! Just wanted to bring it up just in case... I know  you would not want to be not taking all of your prenatal. It's totally possible I was researching the wrong one but incase someone else is looking into it I'm pretty sure it's three pills a day.

Yes, taking them as directed, with a DHA pill since the brand i have didnt come with it already added

Taking The  Honest Co. brand prenatals. Has a vanilla coating so it makes it easier to take.

    Havent noticed any side effects.

Yikes! Yes, that is a different one. Mine is a one a day. I'll send a pic, if I can. It has a very high amount of DHA, comes in a nice and easy geltab with no aftertaste, even in the throes of morning sickness and is highly recommended bc it is made in a cGMP certified facility.
  • All prenatals turn my stomach- iron, no iron, whatever. So, honestly, I take a flinstone vitamin and have for all 3 pregnancies. It has a good dose of folic acid and doesn't make me puke, so, win-win.

I take the free RX prenatal with a folic acid pill....but now I'm wondering if that's causing upset stomach.
  • @Chawk17, my husband once accidentally bought vegetarian pre natals and they tore up my digestive track. So it's totally possible.
