I went for my anatomy scan almost two weeks ago. The ultrasound technician was so wonderful commenting how photogenic this baby is and beautiful images she got! I was actually surprised in the doctor's follow up where she stated, "I'm obligated to tell you something did show up. It used to be a concern for doctors but not anymore." She proceeded to tell me a pinpoint amount of fluid was spotted on the brain which has previously been an indicator of down syndrome. However, because all my down syndrome testing came back negative at twelve weeks, they were not concerned, and it should disappear within a few weeks. There was no need for a follow up.
It has been on my mind since then. My question is, do I have the right to request a follow up? Would that be dependent on my insurance? Has anyone else had a similar situation?
Not in a similar situation but I kind of was a few weeks ago. Firstly yes you have full rights to further investigation and ideally your dr should be referring you to a genetic counselor to discuss the odds of this marker. Like you mentioned, more than likely it is nothing but if it is bothering you, any testing for chromosonal issues are screens not diagnosis so as the patient you can totally request additional screening or diagnostic testing or even a consult.
