Underactive thyroid

My dr just rang- I have an appointment later today- turns out my thyroid is underactive- naturally I did a google search and am now completely freaking out. Any mamas with experience with this can you tell me what it means? I don't want to sit here going crazy until my appointment!

I had hypothyroidism my last pregnancy. I just had closely monitored labs (tsh mainly) and was put on meds. They only had to be adjusted twice the entire pregnancy. Kudos to your doctor for checking your thyroid, most practices don't check it. And I really think it should be standard to test pregnant women for thyroid issues.

@meatball37 I think in Australia it is standard practice to test it. Oh thanks for your response- do you still have hypothyroidism or was it purely pregnancy related? How far along in your pregnancy were you when you picked it up? I can't help but feel worried even though you are right- I'm lucky to know- and now I can be treated!

I have hypothyroidism and have since my 20s. I normally get checked every six months but when pregnant it's more like every six weeks. As long as I take my meds every day I have no problems. You should be fine. No need to worry.

I had hypothyroid with my last pregnancy. It was detected early with my first blood test and I was a put on a low dose of synthroid for the whole pregnancy. I also had blood tests more regularly but it never changed. I went for another blood tests about 2 months after delivery and my levels were normal and I went of the medication. Then o went another 3 month laters just to check and everything was still fine. Interested to see if I need the medication again this pregnancy.

I had part of my thyroid removed about two years ago. That's why they checked mine my last time. It was only pregnancy related luckily. But with pregnancy, the guidelines for a normal Tsh are more strict.

I had my thyroid checked during infertility tests..but it also runs in my family. but have no idea if it's common practice for healthy women to get checked without a history.

I'm in Canada and the it was just part of the standard first time bloodwork for me. I have 0 past issues or family history.

Thanks you all so much for responses- you have helped ease my nerves! Sounds like hopefully it won't be too complicated! I'll let you know what the dr says in 3.5 hours- not that I'm counting! Lol.

Oh, that doctor appointment did not ease my mind at all- in fact totally enhanced my stress! The way she warned me was that the medication is neccisary -TW -but can also be the cause of miscarriage if they over correct! So now I have to be vigilant over if I feel heart palpitations ect- and they can't retest for another 4 weeks so I feel sick, nervous and like it's going to be longest 4 weeks of my life- I'm shocked if this is such a major thing that the test isn't compulsory in the US!

I have had thyroid testing done routinely with all of my pregnancies in the US. They weren't ever brought up though. However thanks to MyChart I could see my results last pregnancy and they showed underactive. I scheduled an appointment with an endo and was on synthroid my last pregnancy.

I wouldn't worry too much. It's actually not that uncommon for women to have thyroid issues in pregnancy. I started off on a low dose and they ended up increasing mine gradually. And my DD turned out just fine. Some months my tsh was right on the money and some it was off by a bit. No doctor is going to start you off on a high dose and over medicate you. And if they do, they are a moron. I think the more scary thing is doctors not screening for it at all.

I got diagnosed with hypothyroidism after my last pregnancy, and they are still switching my dose. I got pregnant when my numbers were low (normally high), which I needed a lower dose. So I am hoping they have improved now, they are going to test them every month during pregnancy to make sure they don't flutuate. But I wouldn't worry so much, there is a chance of not being able to keep a pregnancy with bad numbers. However, you can't stress about it, or it makes it worse

I am so far so good.

Thank you - im not going to lie it's thrown me for a loop but all you ladies have helped calmed me. I'm on 100 micrograms of thyroxine- which I'm told is an average dose.
