How to get a dating ultrasound?

Hello ladies!

I know the date of my LMP (April 30th), but I'm seeing my Midwife on Tuesday for the first time and I was hoping she would refer me for a dating ultrasound. Half because I want to hear the heartbeat and bring my stress level down, half because I've heard that the earlier you get a due date based on the U/S the more accurate it is.

My question is for those of you who requested one, what was the outcome? Is it difficult to convince the health professionals to get one? Anything I should say or not say to try and get one? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks :)

  • You should contact your doctor to find out if that is standard at their practice or not. My doctor did one with my last pregnancy. I didn't request one, that is just how they did things.

  • If they won't do one, there are ultrasound places around me where you can pay to just hear the heartbeat.  Of course, it's not a doctor… So they don't tell you anything you just get to see and hear the heartbeat.  They are done by a certified tech though. It's only $30 at the one by me.

Ive never done it for the heartbeat.  I did the elective ultrasound for finding out the sex when I had DD though.

  • Last pregnancy I requested one from my dr and she sent me, but I didn't know when my LMP was. It wasn't that great, they hardly showed me the baby :( that early you can see the heart but not hear it. I think around 10 weeks was my first appointment with the midwives and they did use the Doppler to hear the heart and did it at every appointment!
  • I would just call and ask. My Doctors office just schedules between 8-10 weeks and will automatically do an ultrasound, bloodwork and meeting with my midwife. As far as what you should say, I wouldn't lie or make something up about anything. Just simply say you would prefer to schedule an ultrasound during your first visit. You can maybe ask if it's covered or not and make your decision from there.

  • I say just be open and up front with your doctor. If you want one, ask and explain why but know that it may not be common practice for them to perform one prior to a certain point in pregnancy. You won't see much on an abdominal scan util 8-12 weeks.

My doc scheduled first appt around 8 weeks and automatically did the internal ultrasound thing and I got a measure and heard heartbeat. My friend was surprised that I heard heartbeat so soon, cuz she didn't get to hear anything til 12 weeks. I think it depends on the doctor, so safest to ask!
  • Mine does not do an ultrasound at all until 20 weeks unless a complication arises!

@scoogy19 thats odd. It's crazy how all the Drs differ. In my last pregnancy i had one at 12 weeks and then at 16 or 18 weeks to check for abnormalities. Mine this time around is going to do one at 11 weeks for sure but I would like to get one earlier just to hear heartbeat and see the little bean.
  • @RSaini my insurance also wouldn't cover an ultrasound other than the anatomy scan unless it was deemed medically necessary (a dating ultrasound is medically necessary) I was bummed the first time around but I knew what to expect this time!

I used two separate offices with my other kids. My first office only did the 20 week ultrasound. The office I used last time had the capability to perform ultrasounds in office so I got a few more than I was used to. I did get one fairly early because I was still nursing and wasn't 100% sure of dates.

@scoogy19 oh that sucks! I did pay for the 3d ultrasound and that was fun just to see bubba :) I know they are inside of us but a glimpse just makes us so happy!
  • @clavo011 so any luck getting one?

That's not odd at all. A lot of countries don't. I have friends in Canada who only had one or two the entire pregnancy.
