Well there are wealth of them! I like baby name wizard's name finding tools and the easy way you can find information on how popular they are. wwww.babynamewizard.com If you are just searching for ideas www/nymbler.com is a really nice way to generate lists of ideas based on other names you like. If you want some pro help from name bloggers (it's a thing!) check out https://www.swistle.com/babynames/ or https://appellationmountain.net/
I think it depends on what you're looking for exactly, but I really like the popularity lists on NameNerds. They compile various spellings of the same name so you can see how popular that name really is! I also like nameberry for suggestions.
I wish I could remember the name of the site we used when thinking of names. If my husband vetoed something, you could find name that was in the same style without having to start searching from scratch
I always liked www.behindthename.com for ethmology or correct spelling and have used it to search out a list of names we like . Mostly we are sticking to Irish and gaulish names so the search is easier as its specific rather than looking through all names and pulling ones we like as you would in a book We never talked about it much but when we got pregnant and once it sank in and no we had our 12 week we opened the name topic and it turned out we already had a couple names that seemed obvious to us and were the same so that kind of gave us a square one
We started there then looked the specific names up for further info and cross reference
@DuchessOfCambridge that's what I do pretty much but I seem to be at a loss as some of these sites can be pretty overwhelming. I guess I just have to start creating a shortlist of what I find appealing and go from there. That's how we arrived with DS's name lol.
@ShePersisted i doubt there are a large percent of names out there that are American in origin given how relatively new the nation is (native aside)?
go with original spellings or look up specific etymology . most common western names are of Anglo Saxon, Hebrew, Greek, Norman or Scandinavian origin
maybe look up a few that you already like the sound of and see where they originate and look for names of the same etymology or even other names with the same origin as your sons?
I really like https://www.babycenter.com/baby-names @ShePersisted if you scroll down a bit on the page it has a great search tool where you can narrow names down based on origin, theme, popularity, and of course sex.
