TTC After a Loss

I'm new here.

edited June 2017 in TTC After a Loss
Hello all, I recently had an emergency D&C done 10 days ago (June 5) due to extreme blood loss and clotting, im psychically feeling better, but emotionally I'm still on the fence mostly because the baby still had a heartbeat before I went into surgery.  I was wondering when everyone got their period after their D&C ?
mt HCG levels were around the 25000 mark, I took a preg test 2 days ago and still positive, I have not had sex yet, nor have any idea when I will. We do plan to TTC when it's safe to do so. I purchased ovulation tests, pregnant tests and a basal body thermometer. I also checked my cervix today and my cervix feels mostly closed I can't even insert my fingertip really. It does however feel somewhat soft still. I am still spotting. How long did your bleeding continue after a D&C, how high were your levels and how fast did they come down ? How long did it take you to get pregnant after a D&C was the pregnancy successful ? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: I'm new here.

  • My first AF returned 5 weeks (so about standard for me since I have 35ish day cycles) after my D&C. It was a normal AF, except I did have bad ovulation cramps for the first time in my life. My levels were not measured for my first MC so I can't comment as to that. It took me like 7 cycles to get PG after my first MC. That PG also ended in a MC.
Were you told to take several cycles off after your D&C before you try again? Check with your doctor. They'll probably give you more information at your follow-up appt.
Its important for you to take off the time stated by your doctor, if there is any. And I know there's usually a feel to rush to TTCAL, but think of the emotional time you need as well. A few cycles off now is better than a complication later or getting KU when you aren't emotionally ready.

  • @dpjennifer I actually wasn't told anything after my surgery, I just asked why everything happened the way it did, but I have a follow up appointment July 13, and I have 1001 questions that hopefully he can answer for me !
  • @amberrmariee20 Definitely write down all of your questions to ask at your follow-up!

  • @dpjennifer I will definately have to write them down or I'll forget some until afterwards. I have so many questions now that I never thought of while it was just all starting, wish I would of asked more questions but at that time I was just so scared
  • @amberrmariee20 I'm so sorry for your loss.
  • @amberrmariee20
I am very sorry for your loss. I'm also new to this board after a recent loss (I think we were both on the same BMB).

With my first MC it took 39 days to get AF, but my levels were at zero within a week and a half, though I can't remember how high they were. It took me 18 cycles to get pregnant, which ended in my most recent MC, but I have PCOS and wasn't able to see my RE until I was at 12 cycles.
  • So sorry you are here. Sucks big time.  I got AF on a reg schedule but didn't know about ovulation.  Cycle 2 I got O at CD15 as normal.

@baileym9126 I was in Jan 2018 BMB, sadly I didn't get to stay there. 18 cycles to get pregnant again to end in MC oh no that's heartbreaking, praying for you for fast healing and Hopefully you'll get your rainbow baby ❤️
  • Thanks @amberrmariee20. Same to you!

  • @amberrmariee20 @SP128 I was Jan 2018 too. So sorry we are here together.... Or that anyone is here. I hope we will all join a new bmb soon. After a week of almost constantly crying following my D&C, the only thing that seems to have brought me comfort is focusing on getting healthy enough to try again. Praying I can be back on track to try in August. At 42, I am afraid I don't have many chances left. Good luck everyone. ❤️

I'm praying to try in august too, when did you have your D&C I had mine June 5th and still positive pregnancy tests.
  • @amberrmariee20 I had my D&C 6/12 - a week ago today. I am feeling emotionally more stable I guess. I guess the hormones are leveling out maybe. I thought of taking a HPT but feel it will be painful to see a false BFP.

My follow up appointment is in a week so I figure my Dr. will tell me how I'm healing. He already mentioned trying again in August so I hope I really can. I am still on my prenatal of course, drinking spinach kale smoothies, and I bought Royal Jelly ( not sure if this does anything. Probably just a $25 jar of honey lol)  today so I am hoping to be prepared!

Fingers crossed, and prayers that August will be the month for us both! You trying anything special to heal and prep?
  • @babybakie do you know what your hcg levels were ? Mine were up around 25000, I don't get to see my gyno until July 13, I'm hoping to have blood work done this week to check my levels. I am going to be doing BBT and ovulation test strips, but my levels need to be back at zero because I can use the test strips.
  • No @amberrmariee20 I do not know my hcg levels, what they were, nor even should be! Everyone on these boards seems so educated!  On the day we saw the heartbeat, I asked the Dr. Shouldn't you test my hormone levels? He said no.... There's a heartbeat.

Maybe during my follow up we will get into hormone levels? How does knowing my levels help? Is that for the TTC part? At this point, I am just waiting for my period.

  • @babybakie I had my levels tested so many times due to bleeding, and they told me to always make sure my numbers were doubling every 48-72 hours which mine were, and before my D&C they tested them and they were around 25000 then they did the ultrasound which showed a heartbeat and a baby measuring 8w3d, but sadly I was bleeding too heavy and dr said only option was D&C. I was so upset knowing there was a heartbeat. So I'm just trying to estimate how long it'll take for my HCG to drop, I went ahead and took a HPT again today and the line is soooo much lighter and took longer to show up, so I'm guessing my levels are dropping at the normal rate !
  • @amberrmariee20 You poor thing.  I am so sorry. How are you feeling physically after all that? I hope you recover asap with all levels getting to were they need to be. All my love and prayers for you and your DH. Xo I found this article interesting...  https://www.google.com/amp/www.momjunction.com/articles/first-period-miscarriage-everything-need-know_0078033/?amp=1#ampshare=https://www.momjunction.com/articles/first-period-miscarriage-everything-need-know_0078033/
  • @babybakie my cycles were super regular because of my birth control, but even without them
usually 27-29 days and light barley bleeding, praying they continue to be regular and light, and hoping it comes fast so my body can be back on track. I hate having to guess what my body is doing, or what's going on with my body !

Psychically I feel fine, emotionally though is a whole different story, I find myself more irritable, short tempered, and moody. Praying that all goes away soon ❤️
  • @amberrmariee20 I feel so similar to what you describe. I'm sure our hormonal state contributes to these moods. Feel better soon. ❤️
  • I'm very sorry for your loss. I'm still going through this myself. I had a D&C more than 7 weeks ago and still have HCG in my system. They think my hormones are just taking a while to slowly go down. But I've been getting blood work every other day to check since it's taken so long. I'm pretty sure this is more unusual. From what I've heard and read, your hormone levels go down pretty quickly after a D&C. I'm pretty sure I just got my first AF over the last week though. It's definitely different than I was used to (spotting for a few days then it got heavier and lasted 7 days - mine is usually 4). There is still HCG in my system, blood work yesterday showed levels of 108. I hope it's a speedy recovery for you. It's been really tough not knowing where my body is at and wanting to try again, but I guess my body physically isn't ready.
  • @babybakie I just picked up a copy of It Starts with the Egg (written by a microbiologist). She has a lot of interesting advice based on studies, and she stated that currently no good quality clinical research supports the use of royal jelly, and it sometimes causes allergic reactions. She also says that because it contains chemicals that act like hormones, it may have an unpredictable effect of disrupting your natural hormones. That is just one source, and of course there could be more up to date information out there, but I wanted to give you a head's up. Of course do your own research on any supplements, but if I were you I would look more into the royal jelly before continuing it.

The author does endorse CoQ10, particularly in the form of ubiquinol which is the most easily absorbed form, as a method to improve egg quality. As I understand it, research has not shown any harmful reproductive side effects from CoQ10 (even in doses higher than you would take on your own). The author recommends (based on the studies) taking 100 mg - 300 mg depending on your particular situation.
  • @zamora_spin I've heard that about CoQ10 but it's not exactly cheap. Of course.
  • @mdfarmchick True! I ordered a bottle (Jarrow brand) from Amazon with 120 pills for about $35 including tax. But I think both MH and I should take them, and that I should maybe take 2 a day, so yeah, I think it's going to get pricey.
  • @zamora_spin Thank you! I did more research after purchasing the royal jelly and I just found the same ...I heard it can even cause death!!!! I'm going to see if I can return it with the receipt since it was like $25.

@mdfarmchick & @zamora_spin I started to come across CoQ10 also as I look things up! I am very interested. I'm going to bring it up with my doctor as soon as I have my follow-up!

  • @babybakie I hope you can get your money back! It is so tough, right now if someone told me that studies show wearing a soda can around my neck would help me get a sticky bean, I would totally do it. Also - wanted to let you and @mdfarmchick know that if you do get ku while on the CoQ10, you are supposed to stop taking it once you have a positive test. I don't know that it is harmful once pg, just I think they haven't studied it yet in pg women. CoQ10 is supposed to repair mitochondria, and studies show it helps improve the levels of ATP in eggs, which eggs need for energy to complete their DNA editing prior to fertilization, so once you are pg there shouldn't really be a need for it.
  • Yes @zamora_spin !!! I was just reading that yesterday, CoQ10 is supposed to repair mitochondria and mitochondria is key to cell health! Putting pregnancy aside, in general people are taking CoQ10 simply to combat aging. Thanks for the warning to stop taking it once pg. I'll let you know what my doctor thinks too, although, he seems to follow a very simple natural philosophy. He an obgyn, not a fertility specialist. Ok... Going to hang soda cans around my neck now. Lol
  • @zamora_spin @babybakie so soda cans around the neck totally works, right?! Lol! Thanks for the info. I'll just let @zamora_spin do all my research for me. What have you seen about exercise and fertility?? I just a few articles that make me slightly worried to move off the couch.
  • @mdfarmchick I don't know if there is definitive research on this, but most of what I've seen (have not done a deep dive) has been pro exercise while ttc to a point. Especially during tww, it's not the time to push your body to its outside limits. Like, unless you are already a marathon runner, maybe it's not the time to take that up. For folks who are not active, just taking up hiking/walking more can be enough. I have a spin bike and take classes on demand - when we were ttc before I would keep my HR below 90% of max, and while ku I did the same and did shorter classes. I like the bike because it is low impact.

I think the most important thing is peace of mind - like, if you're going to have guilt if you don't get ku because you went jogging or whatnot, find something that is not going to make you worry. (PS, I hate jogging and will do anything to avoid it).
  • @zamora_spin I too hate jogging and will do anything to avoid it. I guess it's just a sore subject since I was trying to walk more the last time. And while I know that didn't cause my loss, my brain likes to look for things to blame. I've read a couple articles about how walking, and doing yoga are beneficial but to not get your heart rate up too much as well. Like no HIIT, crazy cardio, etc. I dunno. **TW, I never lost the weight from DS, and it makes me nervous to be told I can't gain any weight or something if I get KU because that's how they were with DS. Super concerned about any weight gain. :flushed: **End TW** Anyway, thanks for backing me up on that.
