Re: Weekly Appointment Thread: week of 6/12

  • @missblaze  WTH! I read the first part of your post and was going to reassure you that I detested this one OB when I had a pregnancy visit with her and was devastated when I went to the hospital and knew she would be delivering DD only to end up loving her and needing her curt manner in delivery… but this guy? Umm no. What a d*#k! I have never heard that before! Did you gain 40+ previously? Perhaps it won’t be an issue regardless. However, he should have been nicer about explaining the policy. UGH!

    @agalvarado Hugs. I’m sorry. I had some body/health goals for before the next time I got pregnant that I didn’t meet either. It’s hard not to be frustrated with yourself. That’s so great that you love your midwife though! And at the very least tracking what you eat etc. can be good practice! I need to be better about that. As you said, I bet you’ll feel better in a few days when you adjust to it.

    @Dani0329 Glad you are staying with our board!

    @huskymomma94 Yay!

  • @EmilyLove25 Yes, I gained 50lbs with DD even though I was eating healthy and taking walks...no GD or anything. It all melted off when I stopped nursing.

    I'm switching to the local midwifery practice. They spoke with me by phone at length today and I really like them.

    P.S. No weight gain rule with them.

  • I went to my OB practice for the first time today, and spent my time with a midwife.  I didn't realize the practice is associated with a midwife practice, and I'm glad it is!  If I do a C-section, it will be family-focused, with an emphasis on skin-to-skin contact.

    They were also super fine with me being gay, which I hate to say, is an obstacle that some people encounter in my city.

    We got an ultrasound!  So much fun to see them both swimming around in there.  We saw the membrane again, and they're both measuring perfectly.

    I did get a lecture about weight gain.  I discussed the multiples book that I've been using, in which doctors who run a multiples clinic recommend a little more weight gain than IOM does (not by much, but some).  Per the book, I should gain 1 to 1.5 pounds per week.  Per the midwife, I should gain up to 1 pound a week.  Fine-- I'll gain 1 pound a week.  I'm not too worried-- I think I can strike a good balance.  I'll be very careful not to go over what the book recommends.

    I got to drink the glucose solution for glucose screening.  Yuck.

    I'm getting a referral to a MFM specialist (as I expected) for NT screening and NIPT next week or the next. It looks like I'll be getting biweekly appointments for a while, with OB or MFM.
    Me- 39 (turning 40 in April), TTC for the first time ever (since Jan 2015), low ovarian reserve
    Married 3/14/14 to my wonderful wife, but her sperm count is rather low
    TTC with frozen donor sperm and science

    7 IUIs, 7 BFNs.
    2 IVF attempts, both cancelled and converted to IUI, both BFNs.
    Decided that my tired old ovaries are ready to retire.
    Next step- reciprocal IVF, using my wife's eggs, my uterus!
    fresh 5 day transfer (2 embryos) 4/17/17- BFP!
    Identical twins "due" 1/2/17 (but anticipated arrival sometime December)

  • @KLake42 everything I've read about the family centered c-sections sound amazing, so glad that's an option for you and that overall your appointment went well (even if no one likes the weight gain lecture!). Hope your glucose screening went well, is that something you're at higher risk for with multiples?

    @missblaze SO glad to hear that... after I wrote my post, I was thinking, you know what, even if I didn't gain 40 pounds, I wouldn't want someone sitting there counting it down and reminding me every time.

    @KLake42 Yay. Sounds like a great appointment.

    ...but y'all, I have to say, I do not know what I would do if a doctor started addressing me about my weight in any regard. It's just so personal. Props to all of you for being able to handle conversations and not acting like an idiotic/aggressive teenage boy as I would have done!

    ETA: Obviously if it was extreme and they addressed me thoughtfully, I might be okay. But pregnant? Still not sure...  :/

  • @EmilyLove25 when I was pregnant with DS1 I barely gained any weight (like a little less than 12 lbs) and the majority of my midwives were fine with it since I was starting at a little bit higher than my normal weight set point and baby was growing well and measuring on track. But at one appointment I gained 5 of the total 12 I gained for the whole pregnancy in the span of one month. And they still lectured me about it, like could not see the forest for the trees.  I'm still pissed about it!

  • @KatieEl Ugh, I would be too. I mean honestly... there is so much water retention at different points too... and just if it isn't a serious problem, please be quiet  :)

  • @KatieEl I'm at higher risk for GD because of my age, because of multiples, and because of my weight.

    I was just over the obese line when I started the IVF cycle.  Then I gained five pounds just from stress-eating the month of the IVF cycle, and I've gained 10 pounds since then.

    @EmilyLove25 I've never had a doctor really talk to me like my weight is an issue, since I've always sort of hovered between overweight and obese.  When I've asked doctors, they haven't worried too much.

    But I'm 40, and pregnant with twins, and being overweight really does statistically mean increased problems-- more of a risk in pregnancy than just with my regular health.  I've read a lot of studies on it.  And I made an effort to lose and maintain some weight prior to getting pregnant-- and I succeeded in that.  It was just 15 pounds, but moderate long term sustained weight loss is a lot healthier than fast weight loss, so I feel really good about it.  And it got me close to the line of "not obese" (I was just one pound shy of it, when I started this last IVF cycle).

    It's their job to encourage me to not gain weight out-of-control, and I appreciate that.  I'm still going to lean towards the weight guidelines of my book-- When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads: Proven Guidelines for a Healthy Multiple Pregnancy ( @caseyw8784 you asked about the book) .  If my babies are born premature, an extra pound of weight can help them survive.  And I'm really leaning hard on nutrient-dense healthy food to get me there (it's easy to gain weight fast on Cheetos and ice cream, not so easy on beans, veggies, and lean steak).window.post_1497561453577_34 = function(win,msg){ win.postMessage(msg,"*"); }

  • @KLake42 gotcha, I didn't realize AMA or multiples affected GD risK at all, that's interesting, thanks for sharing! And I hope you get your results back and they're positive, or I guess negative. I imagine it's hard enough to gain the right amount of twin weight without factoring in a GD diet.

  • I remember an appointment last time around was right after lunch. I went to this chicken place and literally ate a ton of food. When I went to my doctors appointment and they weighed me I had gained 6 lbs in 2 weeks. The doctor said "whoa 6 pounds, you still have 8 weeks to go". I was so embarrassed and most of if was my lunch.
  • Haha, I had a very similar experience, @KatieEl. I gained about 18 pounds with DD. But six of those pounds were during a four week time span (and after I had lost eight because of throwing up). My doctor kind of gave me a hard time about it and I remember being pretty annoyed. I really had just gained back the weight I had lost during my 1st and early 2nd trimesters.
  • Tomorrow! We cannot wait to finally see this sweet one (or two?!). Praying all is "set up" well and for a strong heartbeat.
