Infertility

Stims question...

This is my first stims cycle. So far I have 24 follicles. They are measuring 11-13 so far, I'm on day 7. Anyone else have high numbers of follicles? How many did you end up getting? Also, how did you feel after the egg retrieval? I'm very nervous about overstimulation due to PCOS.
TTC 4 years. 7 failed IUI's with either Clomid, Femara and/or Trigger Shots. Started IVF journey in February 2017. Polyps removed in May. 1st IVF Transfer September 26th. BFP. Expected due date 6/14/18. Baby boy born 5/25/18 at 6 lb 9 oz. My bundle of joy.

Re: Stims question...

  • I've had about that many or more every cycle (did 3 rounds total). I don't have PCOS but have polycystic ovaries. The first cycle I retrieved 22 (had about 30 at the last ultrasound), though more than half were immature and couldn't be fertilized. Apparently immature eggs can be an issue with people with PCOS, but hopefully doesn't affect you!  I'm also AMA (advanced maternal age) so that may have been a problem as well. The next two cycles I retrieved 15 each. I didn't feel too bad after retrieval. Took the day off (can't drive on the day of retrieval due to anesthesia), take Advil or Tylenol as necessary, and just take it easy. Make sure to drink lots of water, and also with electrolytes (coconut water is great). If you're triggering with lupron, then your chance of developing OHSS shouldn't be high.

  • Thank you. That's very helpful. I'm not sure what I'm triggering with yet, but I think lupron. 15 each that is great!!!

  • @Holls214 I had 30 retrieved out of which 21 were mature. The day before the trigger they were worried I'd have OHSS so they lowered my last Gonal dose and made me get Lupron trigger. Which I ended up not using. At the end I didn't develop OHSS. But felt very uncomfortable

  • @holls214 I have PCOS, or at least polycystic ovaries with not many other PCOS symptoms. I had roughly 60 follicles, 40 eggs retrieved, 26 mature, 22 fertilized, and 10 blasts (something like that). I was really worried about ohss but my estrogen levels stayed pretty low given my high follicle/egg count. I was pretty bloated and uncomfortable for about a week post retrieval but I wasn't bad enough to go to the dr or ER for confirmed ohss. I drank a ton of gatorade and ate lots of salty food.

  • Oh my gosh that's a lot! You are a warrior. I had 26 today and can feel them growing and pushing on things...
that is helpful to hear. We're going to be doing the trigger shot tomorrow now instead of today since they need to grow another day. Happy neither of you got OHSS.

  • Hello there! Just adding my numbers in here in case it helps you!

I had 15 follicles 5 days before egg retrieval, and I ended up with 24 eggs. I remember having a very swollen abdomen and felt quite icky for a good 5 days after retrieval, but my doctor told me that he had me on Lupron to stim as it supposedly can pretty much guarantee that you won't get OSS.

    Good luck!!
