extra vit D and Pure Fish Oil?

I am taking a prescription prenatal vit. However, before I got preg I was taking Vit. D and a Fish oil supplement with it. Should I still be taking those in addition to the prenatal. The pharmacist said it was ok, but I haven't went to the ob yet. What do you think? I'm off to work~Have a good day:)

Re: extra vit D and Pure Fish Oil?

  • You probably don't need to.  Prescription prenatals are usually packed with plenty of Vitamin D... I don't know about fish oil though.  Is that omega-3 fatty acids or something else?  I would just check the content of your prenatal and assess from there.

  • yeah it's Omega 3, just a really high quality.
  • I would talk to your dr.  To much is not good.  Your prenatal vitamin should have the recommended dose of vit. d.
  • I wouldn't take the extra supplements.  If your prenatal vitamin already has it in there you could be overdoing it.  One of the first things I learned in my nutrition classes was too much of a good thing is not always better.
  • Instead of the fish oil supplement I would go with a DHA supplement - provides the same nutrients to baby as the fish oil.

Most PNV'S have the DHA built right into them. Or, you can buy them separately, such as Expecta DHA Lipil Supplements...they are sold right next to the PNV's

  • Please call your doctor and ask. An excess of vitamin intake can harm your baby. I understand that you're asking for other's opinions, but please call your doc and ask. He is the expert.

  • I take a PNV and have found a pre-natal omega 3 that i take as well.....I would suggest that you read the labels on both of those &/or call your dr. but I think the fish oil says not to take it is you are PG.
  • Just an FYI -- most people do not get enough Vitamin D and most pre-natals don't have the full US RDA (recommended daily allowance.) It actually acts more like a hormone in your body and can be found in some foods (milk that's fortified for one!) US RDA is 200 IU's for pregnant or nursing women, but, if you live in a warm climate or happen to get a sunny day if you live in the tundra like me, sit in the sun for 10 minutes and your body will produce more than you need for a day. If you do take a supplement, make sure it's Vitamin D3. BUT, as always, talk to your doctor about any supplements you are taking other than a prescribed pre-natal.

[One of my clients is Abbott and I'm working on the Zemplar account, which is Vitamin D therapy for chronic kidney disease.]

  • I continued to take the fish oil and also folic acid, but I am not on prescription prenatal.  I thought the prescription ones were an all-inclusive pill.

  • Thanks everyone I stopped taking them both today. I'll wait to talk to the doctor at my 8 week appt. I hope everything is fine though OMG! I am an idiot. I am trying to be so dang careful with everything---how could i space on the pills. I just read so much about how healthy fish oil is--i just assumed!! I read the epa-dha 720  bottle just now and it says consult your doctor if you are pregnant. I'm so nervous inside right now, i am about to be sick!
  • Almost everything says consult your doctor if you are pg.  It's a liability thing.  I am taking fish oil (omega-3) under the direction of my doctor.  The omega-3s are very important during the first stages of brain development. Do not wait till your 8 week appointment. Call your doctor's office tomorrow and ask.

As for the vitamin D... I would definitely check with the doctor on that one.
