Babies: 0 - 3 Months

When does the "startle" reflex get better?

My 10 week old is always startled.. and does the moro reflex a lot (esp when he is put to sleep on his back or is falling asleep).  I heard it gets better between 4-6 months.. any experience??  Thanks ladies!

Re: When does the "startle" reflex get better?

  • My DS is a little over 4 months old and when he is on his back he is startled a lot.
  • Loading the player...
  • The average baby loses the Morrow Reflex between 2-4 months, it is gradual as the decision making process center of the brain develops.
  • My DS still does it.
  • DD doesn't do it much anymore.  we've always swaddled her though so that helps.
  • Our babies must be close to the same age - we've found that swaddling at night really helps him sleep since it prevents him startling himself awake. We had the same problem with lowering him into the crib or just a random startle he would do in his sleep. Maybe give that a try until he outgrows it?

Oh - and we're noticing that he's not startling quite as much during the day now, too, so you may not have too much more to go.
