If you won the lottery, what would you do?

Travel a lot,  buy my dream forever home, go to culinary school.
  • Loading the player...
  • Pay off my student loans, get a 4 runner, buy DH a truck. I'd build a house near my family and DH's. I'd go on some extravagant trips. I'd pay for my kids and nieces/nephews college. There's also a Tahitian pearl necklace I would buy. It's at the jewelry store my rings and my other nice jewelry is from. It takes about 9 seasons to get enough matching pearls to make it and I'm obsessed.
  • Pay off student loans. Invest a lot of the money. Quit my job. Then travel all over the world. I think my first stop would be Peru to see Machu Picchu.
The first day May 2007 <3  The yes day April 2012 <3 The best day Nov 2013

  • Go on a trip out of the country with DH, put money down toward a college fund for my child, put money down to pay off the house.

  • Pay off my loans, and travel! I would go back to Japan with my parents, and then country hop my way back to the us!

  • •Pay off all debts (including parents' & in-laws').
    •Build our dream home.
•Set up college funds & trust funds for our 4 kids.
•My mom & I have always wanted to write a book together, a modern comedic twist on murder mysteries (Janet Evanovich style). This probably belongs on my Bucket List, since we're gonna make it happen one day regardless!
•Sign up for classes and/or invest in hobbies we've always wanted to pursue but haven't due to work or financial constraints. My husband wants to be a Falconer (has done tons of research, etc-HOA doesn't allow it), and would take up an instrument, woodworking, martial arts, etc. Like @lewliv, I'd take culinary classes, and martial arts, design, etc.
•All the travel. All the places. All the things!
  • Definitely pay off debts like student loans, mortgage, and car.

    Built a fancy ass dock

Remodel our house that has a super weird layout

Give in laws money to retire
My parents, brother and his wife and us always talk about buying land and having a huge house/compounded (I couldn't live with/ next to my inlaw hence the giving them money to pay off their house and retire).
  • @JCPSand2B me and my family talk about a "family compound" too lol  :D we actually looked at land and options, but ultimately I think everyone's wants and needs are too different for it to work.

  • Love everyone's ideas for non-profits. I would also love to start a non profit for developmentally delayed adults.  I used to work for one in North Carolina that had group homes and a day program. The day program was for the group home residents and members of the community. It was divided into 2 groups, retired and non-retired.  They spent the day doing activities that were educational and recreational in order to be able to be as self sufficient as possible. There were even opportunities for them to earn some spending money beyond their disability check.  They took them to plays, movies, church, out to eat, shopping, etc. There was even a local boy scout troop for those who were interested. Organizations like that are sorely lacking in Georgia and once these individuals age out of the school system there is often nowhere for them to go.  I'd love to be able to provide something like that.

Along the same lines as @smallbutmighty77 career training is very important to me. Once upon a time I wanted to be a career counselor and open a career training center and teach people how to job search, apply for jobs, and interview. I think it would also be nice to be able to provide clothing appropriate for job searches.  These are basic skills that people don't learn anymore.  It'd also be nice to be able to provide childcare for people as they job search.  I worked as a receptionist at a staffing agency one summer and I was shocked at the number of people (men and women) who had to bring their kids with them.

Pay off all of our debt.
    Get a third row SUV
Buy a dream home of ours in the next neighborhood over
Put aside a ton of money for the kids college and future weddings so they never have to worry about those two
Take an awesome family vacation and a babymoon to Europe
Give my sister some money to pay off her student loan debt and save money for my niece to go to college
Pay for the dental work my parents need and my dads eye surgery
Yep better be a big lottery lol
  • Cut some family members out of our lives asap
Buy a perfect old farmhouse and a few acres on the outskirts of a cute town
Fill the barn with fun cars
Beach house, mountain cabin, condo in the city
RV across the country for a year
    Travel
Focus on doing more for others and our community
Fill our time with running our own business that provides us with a steady income so we don't have to live completely off of the winnings.

@smallbutmighty77 yes to all of your ideas! I love the homeless shelter and dog rescue ideas. Sounds like you and DH have huge hearts.
  • Damn. Some of y'all are SO nice! Pay off your in laws debt? College for your nieces and nephews? I'm feeling like a smug b*tch about now. I'd definitely pay my parents back for my college, send them on a kick ass vacation, pay off DH's and I's debt, start a college fund for baby to be, and take a trip somewhere amazing like Australia!
  • tova24tova24 member
@cmmiller531 if you go to Australia, please say you'll get a picture of you hugging a koala!
  • @cmmiller531 same! I was reading these and thinking that even though they're my parents or DHs parents, I don't think I'd pay off their debt. if they got themselves into debt, they will likely do it again and ask for us to bail them out, again.

I wouldnt tell tell anyone that I won. I'd likely put it all into savings/college funds. The thought of getting that much money and it all being gone terrifies me.
  • @cmmiller531 I wouldn't help my in laws because they make bad financial decisions. My parents taught me to be responsible so I'd help them.  My sister and her husband would do the same for my kids. I'm sure I would do some crazy frivolous stuff, possibly Kardashian level ridiculous.
  • NxyNxy member
@mrsashworth522 My parents debt is mostly just their mortgage. I'd pay that off for them. I don't really feel like that's going to make them get another mortgage lol
I can't say how well it would go over with DH but of it were 100% up to me, MIL wouldn't see a single penny. She'd be the type with her hand out all the time. (Because she's already that way with Dh's 95 year old grama, oh can I have another 20k mom? I spent the last 20k so I could really use it. yes I'm 100% serious, that's a thing that actually happened)

  • @Nxy Is your MIL my uncle? Because that was exactly how it was with my uncle and grandmother. The woe is me stories from him and hand outs didn't end until my Grandmother passed away.

  • Pay off my student loans, then go to grad school. Digging myself further into debt is the only thing stopping me from continuing my education :disappointed:
  • My husband and I would give everyone in our family a clean slate on their debt. We would pay off all family debt so everyone is back to a level playing field.

We would buy land, build a decent house (not huge...I'd rather have land than a big house), set aside enough for kids' college funds, then we would just live comfortably, not extravagantly.
