SPD / hip pain increase or lingering postpartum

I'm wondering if any of you spd ladies or other hip pain folks are having trouble postpartum. My spd was a lot better this pregnancy than the last two. However, I'm truly struggling postpartum. Sleeping is a bitch, especially getting out of bed. I'm shuffling and waddling around. And I'm generally feeling achy in my groin, hips, and lower back. I'm also feeling loose in general. I think things got jacked up during delivery because of my position but also maybe just because the baby came. SPD lingered after #2 (not #1) but I think it's worst of all this time. I'm going to call my midwife practice tomorrow to try to set up an appointment well ahead of my 6 week visit.

Post your experiences -- anyone else struggling? Anyone see nice big improvements postpartum?

  • @kat81 @kat81_v3 no spd but SI issues and low back herniated disc issues. I haven't had as much pain as I though I would pp. my tailbone area was pretty sore but figured that was from pushing out a baby! My low back was definitely sore and what not so while in the hospital they gave me a belly binder to use which helped not only with my back but also with not feeling like my insides were going to fall out! They let me take it home too! I've had a few instances when getting out of bed I thought I was going to have a pinched nerve that comes along with my back issues but it went away. I'm still sleeping with my u-shaped pillow on my side as much as possible to help prevent any issues. I'm not sure when exercises/stretches can begin but might be something to look into or ask about (me asking too!).

I hope you you feel better and can find some relief!

I'm sorry that you are struggling so badly with it. I only got it mildly this pregnancy and while it's still there it's still mild, however I don't know what it will feel like once I try to run again.  With DD I had it bad both before and for a few months after. OB told me to expect it to continue through breastfeeding since relaxin, the hormone that causes joints to loosen is still present while breastfeeding. Sure enough I was able to get back into running without an issue once we were done nursing but had to take it easy during it.

No SPD issues here, but I had really bad hip pain for 3 or 4 months during this pregnancy. Physical therapy really helped (I think I went to 6 sessions plus the daily at-home exercises) and it's all but resolved at this point, with nowhere near the pain levels pp as while preg.

Just to give some contex on why im chiming in, I'm an acupuncturist who specializes in pregnancy/post partum and also a pre/post natal yoga teacher. I had significant hip pain in pregnancy and at a certain point, what I thought was the beginning of spd but I was able to heal it before it got any worse. Chiropractic was absolutely the most helpful for both. Acupuncture can help but chiropractic is better. If the bones are sheering and out if alignment, you could find instantaneous relief once the chiro puts them back in place. Without the baby to move it back out of alignment, it could be as easy as one adjustment. The hip pain i had didn't go away for me until about 4 weeks pp. It takes a little bit, but enough relaxin should leave your system for you to feel better in a couple of weeks. There is no reason you should have to live with that pain for months, there are a lot of options to deal with it. Chiropractic, physical therapy and acupuncture can all be helpful. I hope you are still practicing good spd protocol- legs together when getting out of the car, sitting to put pants on ect. That's as important as ever if the bones are out of place. Good luck I hope it gets better!!
  • Thanks everyone! I called my midwife practice and they said absolutely chiropractic care is the way to go and sent me specific names. So I think I will bite the bullet and go with that. I will also probably pursue a physical therapy referral; I used it during my last pregnancy. This is my last kid and I was so looking forward to putting this symptom behind me! I just want to be done with it for good!
  • Slow to reply - sorry it hasn't improved for you. That stinks. I was getting chiro adjustments during pregnancy which helped with pain relief (for about a week or so at a time). I've continued to see my chiro, but the pain has gone down considerably. The first week postpartum was hard, but now I just get twinges here and there. It's mostly juat when rolling over. good luck! I hope it gets better!!

  • Not sure if it's longer SPD or something else but the right side of my pelvis close to my hip occasionally really hurts when I stand up and when I lift my leg to walk. Need to look into how to fix it, midwife just brushed it off as after birth cramps

Yeah this could be -- I'd get it checked out
