Insurance

So I'm sure most of you know that your insurance might  cover a breast pump. They even cover one for each pregnancy with my company.

I wanted to make y'all aware of a plan I enrolled in today. I have Cigna insurance and there's a Healthy Pregnancy Plan. Basically i have to speak with a nurse throughout my pregnancy and right after delivery. Then I will receive $250.  It's worth calling your insurance to see if they have anything like that!

  • I did that with my last pregnancy! Free money and they gave me a book of my choice

@jlemons-2 does it really just entail me talking with a nurse? That's all they said

  • Yes, and I really liked it. She answered any questions I had and emailed me info
  • I have Kaiser...I wonder if they do that. Thanks for the tip!
  • I have Blue Cross... not as nice, but you can enroll in Baby Footprints and get $50 towards a breast pump. I am going to call after the 12-week mark.

No, I'm not an early bird, but that doesn't mean I'm a night owl.... I guess I'm an afternoon duck?

  • Look into EdgePark for a pump. They work with your insurance company to help provide free or lower cost pumps. I got a Medela PISA with DD, and this time around I'm going to look into something different.
I also have Cigna (NLCA), so thank you!! I'll look into their program!

  • I did that with DS. Cigna gave us $1000 check after delivery. I was stunned. We paid off my hospital stay and enjoyed a nice dinner with the extra :)

I know it's a little late for those on this board (as once you are pregnant it is considered pre-existing for this benefit), but my work uses Aflac in addition to insurance. They have a lot of different benefits for illnesses/accidents. For pregnancy, there are various plans depending on your insurance and employer. For instance my "pregnancy Aflac plan" is set up to cover whatever my employer doesn't pay for "short term disability". Example, my empolyer's short term disability for maternity only pays 66% of wages for 6-8weeks. Aflac will pick up and cover the remaining 34% of the wages during that 6-8 weeks. Just a little tid bit of information if this is helpful to anyone else in the future. This was never something I knew about until meeting with Aflac.

Edited for spelling and to clarify.

  • Thank you for sharing @dkizz82. I have Cigna, and will check into this. Every little bit helps! Does anyone know how long baby gets billed under mother? I'm due in December and will reach my max out of pocket with just the billing from my OB. I'm just curious is baby will start day of delivery, or if it will be after the 1st of January, which is when my insurance deductible starts over anyways.

  • @tinkerbellwest every insurance is different but for mine the baby is covered for 30 days from birth on my plan since DH and I have different plans (I'm still on my parents because it's cheaper that way). I was due with DD 12/26 and she was born 1/3...yep deductible started over. I tried so hard to have my midwife induce me on 12/30 but she said I had to wait until 41 weeks which I understood as it was hospital protocol unless deemed medically necessary, just a bummer money wise!!! Back to insurance...DD was covered on my plan for the 30 days but we called a few days after she was born and added her to DH plan. By the time the hospital had billed and everything went through insurance everything for DD was billed through her insurance not mine. This baby is due 12/21 so I would be induced (if needed) 12/28 the latest...yay for only one deductible this time!!  :D

@tinkerbellwest I had to add DD within 60 days. We had hospital bills for me and for her. Hope that answers your question.

  • @tinkerbellwest Every insurance is different. With ours, LO will be covered towards our deductible for a regular hospital stay following birth. If the baby ends up in NICU or anything above and beyond what is typical following birth, it's starts counting towards their own deductible.

  • @tinkerbellwest  whether it applies to current year deductible or next year is based on date of service, aka dates you received care. it's not based on when the billing goes through. the actual billing dates only matter in terms of when you are close to meeting your deductible and you have a bunch of things to be billed - which ones end up being included as part of your deductible and which ones are paid for after you meet your deductible depends on when they get put through the system. does that make sense?

i can't speak to how it works in terms of, say you are paying for yourself as an individual. then you add your child. you technically aren't paying for yourself + children (or a family plan including your spouse) so how they handle that i'm not sure.

  • Thank you ladies. I called my insurance last night, and I have 30 days to add baby to the insurance, and for the 1st 30 days, baby will be billed under me. :) I have a $6k individual deductible, so this helps out a lot!!!
