Plus size Mama's?

I wanted to see how many other plus size mom's we have in the group, especially to see if any of the STM's have advice for FTM's plus pregnancy :)

My two big questions for STM's are:
1. Were you able to find out the gender with an abdominal ultrasound? (I carry my weight in my tummy)
2. Was your doctor able to use the doppler to find the babies heart beat?

  • Plus size STM here! I thought about starting this thread after lurking on N17s thread. Glad you did!

I carry most of my weight in my tummy as well, but never had any issues with ultrasounds or dopplers. Well, my doctor did have issues with the Doppler sometimes, but that's because DD was always all over the place. She was suuuper active.

I will say that I did have troubles with the baby heart monitor when I was having her, so they had to do an internal monitor, which means I couldn't walk around.

  • @vvitchhazel I'm glad to hear that! I was afraid I was too fat for them to work, haha. I am hoping to go to an ultrasound place at 17 weeks (my birthday week!) to find out the sex, because I am too impatient to wait until 22 weeks at the anatomy scan.

  • I carry all my weight in my belly as well but never once had an issue with either of those things. Just made the end of my pregnancy super uncomfortable

  • I carry all my weight in my belly. I would say the thing that sucked the most was that I didn't really look pregnant until like 32 weeks - I just looked fatter (to people that didn't know me - those who knew I was pregnant could tell a little sooner).

we were able to find out the sex at week 17 still, so no reason why you shouldn't!

Any other STM heavier this time around than last? I'm about 20 lbs heavier than last pregnancy so I'm hoping to keep weight gain minimal. (I say after finishing off a handful of jellybeans)
  • @rachswi Thanks! I am glad to hear you could find out at 17w, it gives me hope I can too! I am a FTM but I am hoping to gain minimal weight too. One of the doctors told me not to gain ANY wight. I was doing Weight Watchers prior to getting pregnant and they said I could continue. Even if I am not following 100%, hopefully it will help keep me in check!

  • Hi. Are we doing this as a weekly checkin? I hope so:)

I'm fairly new to this plus sized thing and it's destroying me!  I was @ 20lbs overweight starting my last pregnancy **TW it ended in a loss at 21 weeks, in January end TW** I gained 10 lbs. that pregnancy and since January I have gained an ADDITIONAL 10!! So I'm starting this pregnancy 40lbs over weight and I'm only 5'4. I'm not sure how to navigate this whole thing. I don't even recognize myself in mirrors:( Any advice to keep weight gain under 15lbs  would be great!
  • Plus size mama here and never had issues with either. You will be just fine :)
  • @maamgain520 I would like to do a weekly check-in if there is much interest!

I was overweight when I started my last pregnancy and everything was fine.  The doctor did have trouble with the doppler at times, but they said it was more due to the position of the placenta and uterus.  I am starting this pregnancy an additional 20 lbs heavier than last time, so I am really trying to be intentional about keeping weight gain to a minimum.

  • I've always been overweight, but I lost 30 lbs before I got my BFP with DD. Then I continued to lose weight during my pregnancy, even though we stopped going to the gym. I know it's fine to continue pre-pregnancy activity, but I was lifting some pretty serious weights and wasn't comfortable continuing. I only gained 2 lbs my entire pregnancy and my OB said that I'd probably actually lost around 20 lbs of normal weight, while gaining 22 lbs of pregnancy weight. It was mostly because I had a pretty small appetite, a lot of nausea up until third trimester, and a very active job. I'm heavier now than I was for my last pregnancy, however. I was definitely not one of those women who lose weight when they breastfeed (which I did for a year, only to gain wait because breastfeeding makes you absolutely ravenous). Hoping to either not gain any weight or lose some (we'll have an elliptical in a month) this time around again. I did have GD and I think that really helped me watch what I was eating as well.

  • Plus size STM here. I never had any issues with abdominal ultrasounds or Doppler with my first pregnancy. I try not to put too much pressure on myself with the weight thing - obviously I don't want to gain a ton but I am not going to stress out over it.

  • Voluptuous FTM here! Lol! I'm glad this is a thread because I was wondering the same things. I've been wanting to work out but I'm so scared of changing my routine. I think after by first ultrasound I'll start something but until then I'm trying to eat smart. Lots of veggies and fruits and I'm trying to not eat too many carbs because of my PCOS.
  • I am plus size and I'm expecting our 4th and last. I've never had any issues at all with ultrasounds, dopplers, or any other abdominal examinations. My uterus is placed higher up than most women, which is commented on by every. single. technician. But even with the unusual placement and my excessive belly fat, doctors have never had a difficult time finding the heartbeat with a doppler or getting a clear picture with an ultrasound.
You have legitimate concerns but there's nothing to be worried about!
  • I definitely think we should make a weekly check in, what day should it be?

  • @rachswi me..I'm 40lbs heavier to start this pregnancy than the last and I gained almost 60 pounds with DS. I'm trying so hard not to repeat that this time...which so far since MS is so bad already, I've been able to not gain any weight.

  • Plus size stm here! I'm a size 24, and the doctor was able to use a Doppler, I actually have one of my own that I use too (peace of mind for my anxiety) and the ultrasound techs have no problems getting what they need,  don't feel embarrassed if they push your tummy this way or that way or lift it (thanks to my PCOS I carry around my belly)
  • @cutright1 What doppler do you have?

Plus sized FTM here... I lost 40 lbs before getting pregnant *TW* in October which ended in a mmc at 11 weeks *end*TW* I've since gained about 20 of it back (holidays and self loathing) but have lost 6 lbs since finding out I was PG... I think the first couple of lbs were due to lifestyle changes, now I just can't stand eating because of the nausea and heartburn... I haven't found anything that sits well with my stomach...

But I'm really appreciating this thread!!
  • I lost a lot of weight with DD because I always felt full and never had an appetite and this one is heading in the same direction

I was overweight with my first and they had no trouble. I carry more weight in my hips and legs though. I am starting this pregnancy heavier so we will see what happens.

Trying to stay active and eat healthy though.

I am plus size and was actually 40lbs larger with DD. They never had any problems with the Doppler. This time is another story. He said it's because of my c section scar/scarring. He didn't say anything about my weight.
