Re: Pregnancy Questions and/or Concerns: Week of 5/21-5/27

  • Ugh!  Morning sickness... All day sickness!  No vomiting, but damn I feel awful.  I have already spoken with my doctor about potentially taking a prescription emetic, but they want me to try all of the home remedies first.  I make sure I eat through out the day, I am taking b6, among other things.  I took a couple unisoms, but they made me even more tired and I have no idea how they may affect my nursing son, so after two of those I'm not doing it anymore.  I need to be able to function for work, but a part of me knows I survived last time and I should tough it out.  I hate mommy guilt on top of feeling sick.  I just know I have this week long work trip to DC coming up in about 3 weeks and I won't make it if I feel like this.  Just feeling so conflicted...

  • @egirl1025 - I'm all about the morning sickness now! Today was the first full day of feeling nauseous all day long; before this it was intermittent. I too plan to talk to my doctor very soon about a prescription if the nausea gets much worse, since i have a history of getting into a nasty cycle whenever i get the stomach flu - where even a sip of water makes me sick, and i end up in the ER getting IV meds! I don't think that would be a good thing, being pregnant now... :anguished:  With the B6 and unisom (i have heard of this remedy but don't know much about it), is it just one dose a day, that you could take before bed so you won't get so tired during the day?
  • For the B6 and unisom, you take 10-15 mgs of B6 3x a day and the unisom before bed.  I had been taking just half the normal unisom dosage and still felt groggy when I woke up.  Supposedly it generally takes 5-7 days on the B6 to get the full benefit/positive result.

Thoughts on dying hair at home in first tri? Suggestions of brands that might be safer? And obviously I would stay in a well ventilated area if I did it.

We have several big events coming up, and these greys are too much for me.

I had planed on getting it done the end of the month, but then, yaknow, surprise!

  • Anyone else taking or have taken amoxicillin in the first trimester? I was prescribed it yesterday for a sinus infection and after two doses I feel soooo much better already but I hate taking meds while pregnant! Everyone has assured me it's safe but still...

  • Good morning ladies. Question about cramping...I know it is normal to have cramps during the first trimester, but how severe should they be? I have had two occasions now where my cramping has doubled me over. Last night, it woke me up out of a dead sleep and had me pacing the bedroom for a few minutes. Is it normal for it to be that intense? The cramps have not bee accompanied by any spotting, just pain and usually pass in under 10 minutes.

  • @SoldiersMom Sorry to hear you are having cramping. My OB always says do 3 things: drink water, rest, lie down. If none of those things help cramping stop, call.

From what I have read here and there, it is generally safer to do highlights versus all over color since with highlights the solution does not sit on your scalp for any amount of time.  This being said, nothing conclusively says not to do it.  I had my highlights done throughout my pregnancy.  Smells are rough, definitely stay in a well ventilated area if you go through with it.

@AnyMax I always stuck with the ammonia-free hair dye (the less permanent kind like Olia or Nice n' Easy) during my last pregnancy. I'll probably do the same this time.

@AnyMax, I haven't done my own personal research on it, but my OB told me no hair dying during the first trimester. I'm sure different OB's have different recommendations, but that's what I'm sticking with. I'm definitely overdue for a touch up, but my BFP was a big, fat surprise, so I'll be waiting for another month or so before I go in (I'm 8 weeks now).
  • @zamora_spin thank you for your reply. Yes, the doctor at urgent care knew I was pregnant and I called my OB this morning and she assured me it's fine. I already feel so much better.

Appointment Anticipation Questions: is an ultrasound this early normal? Lots of y'all seem to be talking about it like it is, and it seems totally foreign to me. With my son, we only had the one ultrasound at 20 weeks, and at any other appointments my OB checked heartbeat via the audio thingie. But I also didn't even see a doctor until 13 weeks.

I'm not anticipating any sort of ultrasounds early on but I'm beginning to wonder if I should be?

Also, I have no idea what to anticipate seeing a midwife this time around?

  • @scatteringashes - I can't speak for everyone, but DH & I were seeing a fertility specialist because of his age and my irregular cycles.  We actually ended up getting our BFP right before we were supposed to start fertility meds, so my RE wants to see me twice right away to determine proper aging since we're not sure of when I ovulated last cycle.

@scatteringashes dating ultrasounds are becoming more and more common, though not everyone does them.  Is the midwife you're seeing a CNM who delivers at a hospital? A professional who catches at home?  I've seen two different hospital based midwife practices in my previous pregnancies and I'm seeing a CNM now who specializes in homebirths, but all of them have had major similarities: offering the medical tests that you would get with an OBGYN for me to take/not, lots of personalized care and time to answer your questions, a standard appointment schedule.  And highly encouraged "standard" stuff like: glucose test, TDAP vaccine, 20 week AS etc. My midwife offers a scrip for an early ultrasound, but it's up to the client whether or not to have it done.

  • @KatieEl Thanks for the insight! As far as I know the midwives at the practice deliver at the local hospital (homebirth isn't for us this time around -- I figure our roommate doesn't need birth all up in her space, lol). They're part of a practice with a bunch of OBs, so I've been anticipating a lot of what you described -- standard stuff, presumably (hopefully?) a bit more chill on letting things unfurl than an OB might be. I had a really great OB the first time around, but the experience was almost 9 years ago. Things change, as it turns out.

@WildMagelet Good luck! Special circumstances make total sense to me, and I hope your appointments go well.

@scatteringashes yeah, especially if they work in conjunction with an ob practice I would not be surprised at all if you have option for dating ultrasound.

My family practitioner and OB both agreed that the only ultrasound that they medically require for women with regular cycles and healthy pregnancies is the 22 week anatomy scan, in the US this is part of a general change in medical thinking about how useful early sonograms are. However insurance generally still covers several more scans - dating/heartbeat scan around 8 weeks, and a Nuchal Translucency scan around 12 weeks - so many people still opt for them. And of course if there is a medical reason to do an ultrasound it will be performed.
  • @scatteringashes I go to a midwife that is connected with an OB. They have their own birthing center within the hospital. I found that their testing was consistent with what an OB would do. They didn't make me give a urine sample every time though. My first appointment is around nine weeks and they do an ultra sound for dating purposes.

The main difference is that the birth center has birthing tubs and other tools like birthing balls to ease you during labor.  We were also required to hire a doula and go through a birth class. Personally, I have not found an OB that I liked over the years, but the group of midwives fit.
  • It's bad taste to take my 4 yr old to DHs cousins bday party (he's turning 5) wearing his big brother shirt, right? Not the appropriate time/place and all that? We haven't told that side of the family yet and I don't know when they'll all be in the same place again.

@mamakassie2 I wouldn't do it, no. Don't want to steal anyone's thunder, but especially not a kid. Bummer, though. I live far from most of my family and I know how hard it can be to tell them in person, if not impossible!

@AnyMax My hairdresser refused to dye my (not-previously-dyed) hair while I was TTC, because she won't dye hair in 1st or 2nd trimester. Not a medical professional, but I'm not going anywhere but her, so that's that for me!

I'm also clueless on the standard practice for ultrasounds, since I got here via IVF. Every time I see my doctor, she gets out the probe. I'm looking forward to external ultrasounds.
Me- 39 (turning 40 in April), TTC for the first time ever (since Jan 2015), low ovarian reserve
Married 3/14/14 to my wonderful wife, but her sperm count is rather low
TTC with frozen donor sperm and science

    7 IUIs, 7 BFNs.
2 IVF attempts, both cancelled and converted to IUI, both BFNs.
Decided that my tired old ovaries are ready to retire.
Next step- reciprocal IVF, using my wife's eggs, my uterus!
fresh 5 day transfer (2 embryos) 4/17/17- BFP!
Identical twins "due" 1/2/17 (but anticipated arrival sometime December)

  • @mamakassie2 I actually told my whole side of my family at my cousins 5th birthday party 2 weekends ago. Although this was just the family bday party for him (he had a huge party a week before). and it was a bday party/Mothers day party for the family. I wasnt sure if I should announce then either (originally was going to have my Mom n Dad show up in Gma and Gpa shirts) but I actually told my Ant first (Mom of bday boy) and she was so excited she wanted me to tell the rest of the family. She actually had a mobile photo printer with her and took a pic of me holding a sign saying "mom to be Jan 18" and put it on one of the cakes so when the cake was brought out everyone saw.

  • @scatteringashes I haven't had an early ultrasound either. They'll schedule a dating u/s between 10 and 12 weeks, then we have the option to do the NT scan, then a/s at 20 weeks. This wait is killing me though!
  • @scatteringashes, my OB (who is really more like a MW; there weren't MWs available around me when I started with her nearly 8 years ago) is pretty anti U/S unless medically necessary. She used to recommend one for the NT scan and one for the Anatomy scan, but now she recommends NIPT during the first tri and only does an u/s for the AS.

  • @scatteringashes we did IVF/FET so there's more monitoring involved I think. Wednesday is my 8 week scan and I think if all goes well that they'll release me back to my OB (well midwife that I see as my OB) at that time, so I'm not sure after Wed when the next scan will be.
Not gonna lie, I've gotten so nervous before the ultrasounds I almost wish we didn't do them (ok not quite, seeing snowmans heartbeat was awesome) but I get so focused on "what if something went wrong" right before that I'm a wreck.
One of my good friends has a Doppler she used when she was pregnant so when we're further along I'm sure I'll steal it from her and reassure myself that way lol.

Together Let Us Seek the Heights

  • @scatteringashes with my doctors it is standard to do the 20 week anatomy scan and an optional screening around 10-13 weeks. Personally I got a few more than that early on with DS but that was because they were keeping a close eye on him. But this time I assume I'll only get the 2.

  • So for the hair dye question...is it standard to wait until out of first tri to get professional highlights? I know y'all are talking about at home hair dye, but what about in a salon? (Talk to me like I'm dumb.................)
  • @scatteringashes We didn't have an ultrasound with my first pregnancy until the anatomy scan at 20 weeks. We got bad news at that scan, and it became a high-risk pregnancy. I had frequent ultrasounds after that.

This time around, I'm working with a high-risk OB because of all the things that went wrong during my first pregnancy (our son's genetic mutation, a placental abruption during labor, and postpartum preeclampsia that developed into congestive heart failure). At the high-risk OB, they do early dating ultrasounds.
  • @RC1014 I think each OB will give you different opinions. I got them done in the first tri with DD, and if my stylist can find time, I'm going to do it again this time around. I've heard if you get full, on the scalp highlights it's more of a no-no (for some). I do a partial and won't have my roots lifted this time... though honestly, I think it would be fine. PS I also always schedule one for 37+ weeks, so I can make myself as presentable as possible post-labor lol!

Not sure if its allergies or I picked something up on my quick plane trip over the weekend but I woke up feeling terrible.. my throat is SO sore and I feel like I got hit by a bus... I was tired before but now I can hardly keep my eyes open at my desk. I got a list of "safe" medications from my nurse but what other remedies do you guys have for colds while pregnant?

@PleaseSendPicklesNow Best of luck this time around! It sounds like your last pregnancy was really rough.

I appreciate everyone's different experiences with it! I don't know a ton of people IRL who have given birth, and no one in this town that I'm close enough to talk to about the pregnancy yet, so it's good to have some varied input on what's overall normal.
  • @Mudge85 if congestion is an issue, try the NetiPot! It's seriously amazing. You can also boil a small amount of apple cider vinegar and inhale the steam. Humidifiers are life savers, and tea for a scratchy throat.
