TTC After a Loss

New here (loss)

edited May 2017 in TTC After a Loss
Hi everyone.  Hope I'm doing this right!

I just had a loss today (15 weeks).

To start off, it was a twin pregnancy.  I had some bleeding around 6 weeks, went into the ER, and that's where I found out that everything was fine... but it was twins.  At my 11 week NT scan, I found out about my first loss - one of them never grew past 7 weeks.  The baby that didn't grow was still there in the gestational sac.  The other baby was healthy and at the correct size.  While I was really sad about losing one, I was relieved to have a healthy baby.

2 weeks later, I had a bright red bleed at 13 weeks. This was probably the first warning sign.  It went away.

Yesterday I started to bleed again, but much heavier. I also had some light cramping. Since it was a Sunday, I decided to wait to the following morning and get myself in for a scan on Monday.  Unfortunately, when I woke up, the cramping was much, much worse (later I would find out these were contractions).  It was bad enough I couldn't drive, so a friend drove us to maternal fetal for the scan.  The scan looked "normal", but the heart rate was at 144.  That's when I knew something was really wrong, as the entire pregnancy (ultrasound and by home fetal doppler) the baby was in the 190s, which was admittedly fairly high.  The baby was in the 190s that morning, and the fact that it dropped to 144 - something was up.  By this point my cramps were so bad I couldn't talk through them anymore.  The doctor was super insensitive and told me I should just go home because the scan was normal (he literally shrugged and made a face!!!).

My partner wasn't gonna go for that, and called the midwife and was like "SHE NEVER COMPLAINS ABOUT PAIN AND SHE CANT EVEN TALK THROUGH THIS PAIN WE'RE GOING TO THE ER".  So we got admitted, I went to the bathroom (which honestly the cramps were so bad I thought I was going to die in there), and on my way back to the bed, I delivered the baby, 15 weeks gestational age. One of the most devastating moments of my life.

Once the nurse saw this, she got the doctor in right away, who took me up to labor & delivery to make sure everything else passed.  Going into labor & delivery ward with a miscarriage was.... not great.  Shortly after, I managed to pass the placenta and since I managed to pass both the baby and the placenta fairly quickly, I opted for a natural passing rather than a D&C.  They had found one more big clot in the ultrasound, and I luckily passed that a couple hours ago.

I found out it was a baby boy, and was able to hold him, get pictures, and footprints.  He was perfect.  I'm glad I got to have that moment at least.

The doctors don't know why it happened, and according to the OBs words it was "weird" and doesn't happen often at my stage.  She also mentioned the baby was perfectly healthy, and only died because I went into labor and forced it out.  That was also devastating to hear.  There are two big possibilities: a) the gestational sac of the other baby never went away and it's possible my uterus went into labor to expel the other baby and I lost both. b) They found a large blood clot behind my placenta - so there is a possibility I have an issue with blood clotting.  I'll find out more when I get the blood work done.  Hopefully, if this is the issue, I can prevent it from happening next pregnancy.

I heard over and over again that once you hear the heartbeat and get past the first trimester, it's very rare to lose the baby.  The baby had no abnormalities, and had a heartbeat 20 minutes before I lost it. Sometimes statistics don't mean shit.

Anyways, sorry for the novel.. felt good to type it out though.  I hope my story helps someone else who has faced something similar. We are planning on trying again as soon as I get my next period, so hopefully 6ish weeks or so.  We'll see how it goes.
