Prenatals

ok. So this isn't my first rodeo. Last pregnancy I was able to stomach the gummy prenatals. I can't even stand the thoights of them right now. I also took Rainbow Lites last time. They didn't make me sick but they were horse pills.

What are you taking that isn't making your sick?

Re: Prenatals

  • Up and up brand horse pills lol. I take them after I eat breakfast (or whatever the first thing is I eat).

  • I've been taking Vitamin Code Raw Prenatal for the past ~10 months while TTC and PG, and it's never made me sick. I think it's because it's food based. The only annoying thing is that you have to take 3 pills a day but it's also fine to take it twice a day (e.g. 1 pill in the morning, 2 before bed).
  • Rainbow light here!

Thanks ladies. I'm staring at my prenatals now and not wanting them.

I have gummies and rainbow light horse pills.  If I can stomach it I take the horse pills, and if not I take the gummies (very very slowly).  Regardless I always take them over the sink because it's pretty often that I gag and spit them up.  I've given up on taking prenatals being a tolerable experience - just need to choke them down somehow for the little one!

  • Due to iron deficiency--- I have to take Vitafol FE which is prescribed.  I HAVE to take them with food or else they come right back up :( I wish I could take the gummies, but not enough iron
  • I've been taking New Chapter Perfect Prenatal vitamins for over a year now and have never gotten sick with them. They don't smell/taste weird and are about the size of a normal multi-vitamin. I take three a day without any problems, can even take them on an empty stomach. They're the only ones I've ever taken so I can't compare costs but I think the drawback to these is that they're kind of on the pricey side.

  • I did the rainbow light minis for a week and then that was the end of it lol couldn't get them down. I'm back on gummi and my gyno said that's fine. There are gummis with iron now but she told me it's not necessary bc we really get enough from food. I'm thinking of switching over though

  • I'm taking a generic from Walgreens - it's a gelcap so it is way easier for me to take than any other pill. It's giant but I haven't had too many issues. For a few weeks I was taking a gummy but the taste was worse than the huge pill.

  • I'm taking Genestra brand that I order from Well.ca. they're supposed to be "professional grade" and they never make me nauseated, though I always take them with food anyways out of habit. I also like that they don't turn my pee fluorescent green like some others so I feel like I'm retaining more vitamins rather than peeing it out.

  • I take a Walgreens horse pill. I know a lot of women take their prenatals at night instead of in the morning (I started doing this after my BFP, though I haven't been nauseous). From your post earlier this morning it seems like you take yours in the morning. Could switching to PM help?

I know "morning sickness" isn't restricted to the morning, I just found from lurking other BMBs that some women had to take their prenatal at night or they couldn't do it.

this is me. i take horse pill NatureMade (gel coated, though, so much smoother). i have to take them literally as i hop into bed. i did last time around too. MS for me is definitely not limited to the morning.

the rainbow lite minis didn't work for me because the food-based pill physically tasted so bad with my pregnancy tastebuds that i couldn't gag them down. smaller pill, but not a winner for me in the end.

the best i can describe it, you have to put it on the front of your tongue and sort of "flip" it down your throat as you take a swallow of water. i know everyone "knows" how to take pills but with the large ones and the gag reflex it is worth a little mental thought as to what, exactly, you are doing, especially if you are having trouble. • anewadventure - interesting approach with the tongue flip.  I might try that tomorrow with my horse pills.  Right now, I put them in the back of my tongue (as far back as I reasonably can) and then just try and quickly get it down with a big swig of juice.

i'm so with you - that's what seems logical, right? for me, the farther back i place it, the more likely i am to gag/choke on it instead of get it down. go figure. when i do the tongue flip, for lack of a better term, it tends to not even touch the sides of my throat on the way down which seems to help a lot.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@ktcakes87 - I feel like if I tried liquid first and then the pills, I'd dribble all over myself.  I use a lot of liquid to get the pills down!

  • I take theralogix prentals and its been ok.. They are three pills
  • I'm laughing at that gif @anewadventure !! Perfect image of what would happen to me most mornings if I tried that!!

I take Prena Pearl, prescribed by my RE back when we started fertility meds, and I have never had any issues with it. It's smaller than a horse pill, but not the smallest pill I take each day. The bonus to this story is that it's free. With my insurance it would only be $10/month, but the pharmacy gives a discount program that sends it free each month, which is amazing.

Prior to that prescription, I was just taking Women's One A Day with an extra dose of Calcium which my OB had said would work, as long as the multi vitamin had 400mcg of Folic Acid, which Women's OAD does.

(I should note that after a lot of testing and specialists, I also take extra Vitamin D, Folic Acid, and Calcium daily on top of my prenatal, because apparently my body just eats that stuff up...)

  • Lol those gifs are so funny. Thanks for the laughs. My RE just had me take a multi vitamin, d3 and folic acid. He started me in that four months before I got pregnant and he said for me to just keep taking that. That I didn't need a "prenatal " I've been meaning to ask my Obgyn what they think. They did send me home with a ton of prenatal samples but didn't seemed worried for me to switch.

I take Oxylent Prenatal packets. It's powder that you add to water and drink. It tastes good, ensures I drink water everyday, and never makes me sick. It's food based. It does not contain DHA so I take a DHA capsule in addition. I believe it is food based too, but I can't think of the brand right now. I work at a health food store and we have "Natural Living" experts who helped me pick out which vitamins to take. I suggested gummies and she said absolutely not because they do nothing but sit in your gut. She told me drinking your vitamins is the best way to go because it absorbs into your system the best that way.
Just passing on what I was told though. Absolutely no judgement was meant towards anyone taking gummies
  • dkizz82dkizz82 member
@ChelK3 no wonder they make me sick. I haven't ever heard of these.  They sound good.

  • I'm taking the Healthy Mama Prenatals combo pack, that has the additional pill for DHA. I'm also taking a Calcium pill, just the Walgreens generic. I was taking them in the morning, but starting feeling nausea. I take them just before bed now, and haven't had any side effects.
