Sick baby

Reaching out here for some been there done that mom's. Baby (4 months) and I both have a bad case of stomach flu (norovirus) with vomiting and diarrhea. Called the pediatrician and I'm supposed to monitor her wet diapers , mouth for dehydration and temp. Basically nothing can be done besides IV fluids if she does have temp, dehydration etc. This is my first baby and I'm a nervous wreck. I'm sicker then a dog too and just hope to hear someone else has gone through this with LO's and can describe your experience.

I've heard this is going around nationwide and really hope I'm the only one of our Oct mom's  having to battle this out.

Re: Sick baby

  • Lurker here from September group, but I just went through this. My lo picked up norovirus from daycare, then gave it to me and my husband. Luckily when I had it my husband was still ok and was able to take care of LO. I was better the following day, but by then my husband got it. It was AWFUL but we got through it. My doctor said the same thing, basically we just had to monitor wet diapers and also make sure his fever didn't last longer than 72hrs. Because my LO had no appetite we bottle fed him (instead of nursing) and would try to get him to take a few sips every 15-30minutes. We took him in for a follow up bc his stools were still very runny and frequent and our pediatrician recommended probiotics. At that point he was fever free and had a much better appetite but his stomach was still very sensitive because of the illness. This all happened 2 weeks ago and we are much better! Wishing you all a speedy recovery. Don't hesitate to call your pediatrician with questions. I'm also a FTM and it was a really scary experience.

  • @BabyBoyH92016 thank you for sharing! It's comforting knowing your family made it through this. I just woke up after having it for 24hours and already feel loads better. Hope I will see LO improve quickly too. H has been unaffected so far and I'm hoping to keep it that way.
I'm sanitizing and washing like crazy to get these household germs zapped. I read bleach is the only thing that kills the germs so I have been wiping down surfaces with diluted bleach and running the wash on hot.

  • I had the flu once while DD was sick with something else, so I can relate in the respect that we were both sick... all you can really do is keep in mind that it will pass, and push through it. I didn't have any help at the time with her since her dad worked nights and slept all day, so I just wore a face mask so I wouldn't give her the flu, and did my best to keep her comfortable. There are probiotics your pedi can give you for your LO to help combat diarrhea, and at that time, I would offer he water between bottles to keep her hydrated. She mostly slept, but when she was awake she was miserable and it was heartbreaking. But, it doesn't last forever. Just give extra fluid and extra love (to yourself too) and if in doubt, just give that pedi a jingle!
Get well soon you guys, sending you all the love and best wishes ♡
  • Yeah, that was 5 years ago, and I haven't been put in that situation again with boys so oops  :#
  • @allythekid. It stinks because pediatricians still recommend this! They're old school but you'd think they'd keep up with research. I'm glad tou haven't had to deal with that with your boys

  • V woke up coughing and.congested this morning. Now it's baby's first cold :-( once again she caught it from me which I picked up from my job at the seniors home. I've been suffering for 6 days with this crap and am worried she will have it for even longer. This sucks!! I'm using cool mist humidifier right now, watching for fever and I've got saline drops and nasal aspirator ready. Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery. I feel so guilty about passing this crud to her again. I'm trying to be so good with hand washing etc. But we are in such close quarters when BFing it's challenging .

  • @brzvice I hope for a speedy recovery for you both. It might also help to put baby Vicks on her feet.
  • Anyone's LO have an ear infection yet?  I think S might be getting one. She's been grabbing her ear a little bit and was waking up every hour last night until I put her in bed with me.
  • So my husband gave me his cold which my daughter now has with a low grade fever.  Her twin brother seems fine with no fever. I'm not sure how to keep one from getting sick at all while making the other better. I'm starting to think it's inevitable he will catch it from someone in the house now.
  • Sounds like you're doing everything you can do to make her better @brzvice Try looking at it this way, by passing that cold on, you are helping V's little body to produce the antibodies it needs to further protect itself in the future! That's my outlook anyway. It's just not preventable here with me having two young school age children here with the babies. So, at least there is *sorta* an upside.
@Ladybug2821 Johnny hasn't had one yet *knock on wood* Ear infections are very tricky to recognize, the symptoms often mimic those of teething- if you're able, I'd go to the Pedi about that just to be on the safe side in case S needs antibiotics.
@Ariylle I'm not going to sugar coat it, he very well may get sick. But with vigilant intervention and prevention he may not. There's really no way to be 100% certain, so just be prepared no matter what, what ever happens will happen, and it will pass.

So V vomited twice today. Big time.

She's been extra fussy at night the past two days and has had a runny nose. I knew something was up when H  texted me that she took an almost 3 hour nap today. I'm  Not sure what Is going on but I  will be monitoring her closely. This time I'm not sick and neither is H and we both work in health care so I'm clueless. A few months ago when it was  norovirus I knew I picked it up from work because I had it before she did.  Today I'm wondering if it's from her solid food that sat out too long. I freeze all my homemade baby food in cubes then them thaw at room temp for a few hours the day she eats them. I  am a puddle of tears knowing my baby is once again sick, possibly because of me. UGH

  • @brzvice so sorry about v! Hopefully it's just a quick little thing and she'll be over it in no time. Keep us updated!
  • It could be from the food, but it honestly takes quite a while of sitting out to spoil, so try not to make yourself feel guilty over that possibility. Even if that is the case, lesson learned, you have a new plan, don't beat yourself up and focus on loving on that girl!
I learned from experience with Jimmy that when he was ACTUALLY teething, it would make him physically ill- fever, vomiting, diarrhea- and this goes on with him even now (been going through it the past two weeks actually) until those pesky teeth finally break all the way through. It took me a while to put two and two together with that one, and for a while got paranoid that he either suddenly developed an allergy to everything, his doctors were just crazy for telling me all the tests they ran on him were negative, or that somehow, something I was doing was making him sick- so I know that awful feeling.
And last but not least- it could just be a virus. As you know from working in the medical field, babies are far more susceptible to them than you are, so in the event that you did bring some germs home from work, you've likely already been exposed to it and have built up an immunity, but poor V hasn't yet (until now). There really is a brightside to this even if you don't see it now- this could be helping her to boost her immune system early, which could possibly give her an advantage healthwise once she starts pre-k :)
No matter the cause, it happens mama. Just give her all the love, and any necessary medicine and she'll be right as rain in no time!

Thanks ladies for all the love. She has vomited 3 times in the last 24 hours and has had 3 diarrhea blowouts. Poor V! She's keeping formula and Pedialyte down in small increments and BFing for short bursts. @AllyTheKid I'm so glad you shared that Jimmy gets like that when he's teething. Good to know. V has cut her bottom 2 teeth and I  have a feeling more are on the way.
I'm going to keep monitoring her and hydrating her and hopefully by Monday she will be better and we won't have to go in to the Dr.  This is exactly what she was like when she had norovirus so it is possible she picked up another stomach bug. It sure doesn't seem any easier the second time around and I doubt it ever will be. Seeing your baby sick is so heartbreaking    :'(

  • @brzvice Awww poor V  :(.  I hope she wakes up tomorrow and is completely better and it was just a short bug.  The good thing like @AllyTheKid said is that she is building a strong immune system. The most S has had is a stuffy nose at about 2 months so I'm actually worried that she hasn't gotten sick. I definitely don't want her to and dread the thought of it happening but at the same time I'm scared her immune system isn't going to get a strong as it should.
