Newborn + 18 months old - sleeping issues

Hi all, this is my first time creating a discussion topic, but I feel already desperate and overwhelmed and need some input from you guys. I have an 18 months old-Sophia, which has sleep through the night since she was just 4 weeks (this happened on its own) we always had to rock her to sleep but once she was out she was out till the following morning with the exception of a teething problem or a cold. We just had baby Lucia arrived a week ago and ever since 2 week before Lucia was born, my oldest started waking up at night and crying. We did some sleep training when she was about 9 months and she learned to go to sleep on her own in her own room, now (since 3 weeks ago) she starts crying when we are just waking towards her room at bed time, we have to put her already asleep and she wakes up 3 to 4 times crying. Has anyone had this problem? Do you think is related to the new baby? She started doing this before the little one was born. What are your suggestions? Do I do the cry it out method again? She sleeps in a little toddler bed so she is able to get out of it and stands by the door crying her eyes out. Please help! :(

  • No help, sorry, sounds like she's hit the 18 months sleep regression at an awful time. All I can do is offer sympathy and hope it passes quickly

  • 18 month sleep regression is normal. Just be persistent and ride it out. Make a plan with your SO/DH and try not to show frustration toward the 18mo.

  • You are coming across a little mean @NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot. I was just looking for advise. See if someone that just had a baby like me ( a week ago) has also an 18 months going through the same

  • But seriously, the 18 month sleep regression is normal. I still keep my 2.5 year old in a crib so I'm no help there but I would suggest consistency is key no matter what you choose to do. CIO worked for my son but I didn't have a baby at the same time so take that with a grain of salt.

    Good luck.

  • First of all I didn't know I needed to introduce myself here... it was my first time ever posting to an online board. Second, if I had know this was sleep regression I would have google it first ( which I already did and have a better idea of the issue )

Welcome, @Jillyjersey. Swaddling helps our little guy a lot, too, but we're still up all the time for feedings. Someone posted this article the other day, which I thought was good: https://m.kidsvt.com/vermont/bringing-home-another-baby-six-months-in-a-mom-reflects-on-double-duty-parenting/Content?oid=2281259

@kns1988: That's a great article, thanks for reposting.
  • @kns1988 don't know the last time I cried that hard! Needs warning lol.
  • Hi @Jillyjersey and welcome! Thank you for sharing your experience. It has gotten a little better here, she only getting up twice, (about 4 time right when we had just come back from the hospital) baby is only 10 days... we have managed to have her lay down in her bed and fall asleep with my mom sitting by her side. But I'm so nervous to take upon the role again ( c section, still a little uncomfortable to kneel on the floor next to her bed) at lest she doesn't seen jealous to me of the new baby but seem way to excited all the time. It's testing us in so many ways, the struggle is real! But I'm hanging in here, some days are better than others, I exclusively pump for baby so there is one more thing to add to my hormones
