WTF Wednesday

I am going to start this because I have a "WTF?!?"....

I have been contracting at my current employer for several months and they now know I am pregnant due to how sick I was for a few weeks.  The owner of the company gave me a verbal full time offer last Friday and told me he would put it in writing that day. I never received it. On Monday he called me into his office and said that after a lot of thought, he wanted to hold off until he understood what his responsibilities would be from a maternity standpoint.  He was concerned about paying me maternity leave and not having enough people to cover for me. What an asshole. I know he can't legally do this, but I also don't know if I have a case against him since he never put the offer in writing.
Momma to Amelia Marie (7/14) and Austin Samuel (11/17). Adding baby (girl) #3 on 7/21  <3

Re: WTF Wednesday

  • @ameliabedelia-2 I am so sorry you are going through that. That is absolutely terrible.

Most of the laws about discrimination are federal, but it would depend on your state if they consider a verbal offer on the same level as a written. If he rescinds the offer, I would suggest contacting someone from the Labor board. I don't know what state you are in, but in Texas we have the Texas Workforce Commission, most people usually think about TWC for unemployment, but they would be a great source of information on who to contact.

  • @ameliabedelia-2 Um that's discrimination, plain and simple. I would be contacting whatever resources you have available ASAP to see what your options are should he choose to rescind the offer.

I surprisingly have no WTF. Yet. The day is still young, though haha.

My WTF is to the crazy lady in the lab that was so aggressive taking my blood that it spurted down my arm. She also tied it off so tight I could not bear the pain. I go back in ten minutes for the next draw and I'm asking for someone else. The last one was perfect.

@ameliabedelia-2 Sorry for my language, buuuuut...
Unfuckingreal. Wow. What a total and complete asshole.  DO NOT accept this.

  • WTF is up with this vaginal discharge. I swear to god it will fry through my underwear. I asked my doctor and he said, "totally normal as long as there's no unusual color or odor to it." ... so I guess wearing panty-liners 24/7 is something I do now. I don't remember this problem with my other kids.
  • rachswirachswi member
@eazybreezy225 make sure you change the pantiliners suuuuuuuper often or you'll get a yeast
infection. Not speaking from experience or anything  :|
  • @rachswi thanks for the tip! I'm in the habit of changing them every time I use the bathroom, but good to know I might want to change them more often!
  • @eazybreezy225 Yeah, the discharge is no joke. I wear panty liners all the time and always change my panties before bed.

  • @ameliabedelia-2 -  That is awful.  You should contact the EEOC office for your region.  Pregnancy is a protected status.

  • @ameliabedelia-2 ugh that is terrible. Sorry you have to deal with that jackassery.

My WTF is how is it only Wednesday?!?
  • My WTF is the weather... Tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings! My husband doesn't want me driving home through it, so DD and I are having a sleepover with Grandma and Grandpa!

  • @ameliabedelia-2 he can't do that, and depending on your state, any maternity leave provided would be unpaid anyway so WTF? If he mentions it again, you might just mention that in case he's not aware, pregnancy is federally protected, and just like he couldn't decide to rescind the offer because he figured out that you're female, of a certain religion, or disabled, he can't rescind it due to pregnancy. Obviously, doing that doesn't set up a great working environment because it is a threat, basically, but if you think he will rescind anyway, I'd send him an email (So there is a paper trail) saying something like, "Dear Mr. Bob, I want to tell you how excited I was to receive your verbal offer of full-time employment on <date>. Likewise, I was dismayed to have the meeting with you on <date> where you stated you were reconsidering due to my pregnancy. Since you are concerned about maternity leave, here are the relevant laws (link to FMLA, link to any state protections, link to pregnancy discrimination act). As I am sure you know, employment discrimination on the basis of pregnancy is illegal. I really look forward to receiving your written offer. Sincerely, Amelia." How big is the company? Is there an HR dept? If it's a really small company, you may have an issue b/c a lot of EEOC protections extend only to employers with 50 or more employees. That;s outrageous, though, and I can't believe he straight-out told you it was due to your pregnancy instead of at least trying to make it seem like it was due to something else. What an idiot.

  • @ameliabedelia-2 I agree, that's crap. Sorry you're going through it, contract work definitely has it's downsides and hope you get the offer you clearly deserve!

My WTF- drivers on their phones! Or it could be my hormone induced road rage, but I just want a giant sticker that says "I'm carrying precious cargo so get the f*** off your phone or get off the road!"  :#

Another WTF is the mom group I'm on on Facebook. It makes me so angry how dumb these women are. Excuse me, willfully ignorant. Someone asked how early third time mom's showed. The comments just piss me off. "I was visibly pregnant to everyone by 8 weeks with my first." NO! I even posted the image someone else posted on here not too long ago about the size of the uterus by week. And I said that no one wants to admit that they're bloated, but your dumb ass is not showing a visible bump right when you get your BFP at 4-6 weeks.  :| It just makes me so ragey.

    Edited for clarification.

  • Wtf wtf.
Everyone has been over the moon excited and happy for me.
But my 1 aunt has always been a huge witch and we have a weird relationship bc she tries to make it like I'm her daughter even though we aren't close at all. Her response when my parents told her was "oh I knew it I knew it. She's been texting me more lately." BUT ALSO that she didn't realize I was still with my husband.
I'm so livid and I'm trying to chill bc I don't want to be stressed when pregnant but I can't help but to be agitated. Wtf.

  • @AMCsquared yeah, it's really off-putting when someone reacts with less than enthusiasm to your news. we had a string of weird reactions last time (my first, so i was EXTRA into it, naturally) and it was very upsetting. finally i said, "if the next person can't just genuinely say "congratulations!" i'm going to stab someone." i understand each person or couple has their own issues, and fertility is a rough subject, but this seems like a basic life skill. smack on a fake smile and say congrats. if that's all you can manage, fine.

just think of it as the beginning of all the unsolicited, bizarre shit people will say to you now that you're pregnant. i'm looking forward to those threads reporting on the level of crazy that falls out of people's mouths.

  • @anewadventure Seriously! When I told my cousins, one asked if we were crazy and the other asked, "On purpose?" WTF? Um... My husband and I are happily married, financially stable, and love being parents to our 16 month old. Why is it so outrageous that we decided to have another baby? We've been very vocal from the get go about wanting a big family (4 kids ideally) and we're aiming for 2 year age gaps. If anything, this should've been expected.

  • Yeah I don't get it. Literally everyone else has been so happy minus this 1 crankass. She had to make it about herself I guess.
