Cholestasis

Hi mums. I'm a first time mum and I've just been told by my doctor that I have cholestasis so I have to be induced at 37weeeks. I'm just a little bit worried cz I was really hoping to go to full term but this is what it is so I guess I should start getting myself ready both mentally and physically. My question is has anyone ever gone through this before? Did you have a c-section or vaginal delivery? What should I expect? Your feedback would highly be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Re: Cholestasis

  • No experience here, but I followed a few women on previous boards who were diagnosed with this and were also induced at or around 37 weeks. I think it was mixed as far as who had a c-section and who had a vaginal birth. Sorry you're dealing with this, it sounds miserable.

  • I am currently dealing with it and pregnant with twins. My OB is inducing me this week due to the cholestasis. I am 36 weeks. I am going in for a vaginal delivery unless there is a need for a csection.
  • My husband's sil had to be induced at 36 weeks because of this about a month ago. She had a vaginal delivery and everything went fine for her birth. No nicu stay.

How did y'all figure out you had this?  My palms have been itchy lately so I'm going to mention it to my dr.  Any other things to watch out for?
  • Thank you very much for your replies. You have no idea how much it encourages me. I have been stressed up since I got the news. I'm trusting God for everything to go well. Thanks again!
  • @Imudra. Yes itchy palms for both hands and legs and generally your whole body. I reported it to my doctor when I was 34 weeks, they took my blood samples and it took one week for the blood test to come out so I advise you to mention it to your OB just to be on the safe side. Best wishes!
  • A close friend had it with her first. She was planning a midwifery birth, but obviously that didn't happen. She was induced at 37 or 37.5 and had a vaginal birth. Of course, your chances of having a c-section are higher if you're induced, but as far as I'm aware, there's no reason to go straight to a c-section.

Also, apparently this is not overly common, but she just had her second without cholestasis. She delivered at the midwifery like she had wanted with her first. The midwives said it was one of the first births they'd seen where the issue didn't return. I do know she was very aggressive with natural liver support (cholestasis is an issue with the liver not filtering properly) throughout her second pregnancy, so that likely had something to do with it. She was drinking tea that had milk thistle in it among other things, and I'm not sure what else she was doing.

I don't have cholestasis, but I was diagnosed with PUPPPs a few months ago and my midwife was very concerned that it would develop into cholestasis. Like PP said, I started several homeopathic treatments, and my symptoms completely resolved in about two days.

I disagree. By that logic, why does gestational diabetes have it its own thread?

Because I said so. j/k I do agree that this particular condition as well as the pre-e are pretty serious and can warrant their own threads. They could easily get overlooked in the symptoms thread.

I'm sure it will be nothing to!  Thanks ladies!!!
  • I am also going in to get checked out today. A couple weeks ago itching had started at night, talked to the dr at my appointment and he double checked the urine sample I leave at each appointment and said nothing looked irregular so we would wait two weeks and see where we are at or to let him know if it got worse.  Well, the itching had went away by my appointment Monday but Monday night, yesterday, and today is back full force. So called the dr and am going in this afternoon. This is my third pregnancy and did not experience this with the first two. Here is hoping it is nothing but dry skin or swelling side affects.

  • I was dignosed at 18 weeks with cholestasis. I'll have my rcs may 25th at 37+0. I have atypical itching. I itch everywhere but my hands and feet and I get urqp frequently. Had bpp weekly from 24 weeks to 31 weeks and then 2x a week nst from 32 to delivery. I take ursodiol 375mg 3x a day and get blood work every 2 weeks. I have 2 weeks and a day left and I'm so excited. No more itching soon!
  • Glad i found this thread, i just developed a extreme itch couple days ago im away from my ob but i called in and they told me to go to the nearest hospital with L&d to get my blood tested. Unfortunately the doctor didnt realise it would take 2-3 weeks for the results im 36 weeks pregnant. She put me on medication and hoping it will help. I see my ob next week so hopefully we will know more whats going to happen.

I started feeling unwell lightheaded, tired dark urine and extremely itchy no matter how much i scratched i felt like i couldn't get deep enough like i was going to break skin. The pills are suppose to take a couple days to kick in fully so for now i suffer from itching moisturizer dont help any unfortunately. I have been taking things easy and just trying to monitor babys movements to make sure all is ok if not im to go back to hospital.
