34 weeks, 1cm dilated and 30 %effaced

Im a ftm, i went in for a visit today and i told my doctor about some stabbing, shooting pains id been having for the past few days and pressure, and spotting. They checked me and i was 1cm and 30 % effaced. I also got an ultrasound done and baby is measuring at 6 poinds and 2 weeks ahead so they said they would see me weekly now since im dilating. I asked if it was normal to be dilating already and he said it was very common.
Anyone else have this experience? Do you think ill make it to 40 weeks? Or possibly go a little early. Im excited. I hope i might get to meet her a little sooner than 40 weeks

  • You can be 1cm dilated for a long time, so there's really no telling. Try to stay comfortable and patient.

You should check out the "Calling all lurkers and newbies" thread and then the "Please read first" thread since it seems this is your first post here. Welcome!

All of this.  My best friend was dilated to 3-4cm for more than 2 weeks with her first before they wound up inducing her to just get it over with.  They didn't check her until 36 weeks, but she was 1cm at that point.  She was induced at 40+1.

I was completely closed on a Thursday at my 39w appointment, and then had my baby that Sunday after going into labor naturally.  Really, it's cool to know that stuff is happening, but it doesn't really have any bearing on when you'll go into labor.  Until your water breaks, the baby could still be in there a while.

  • Your dilation and effacement now has nothing to do with how long you will be pregnant (different if you were say, 26 weeks). You could walk around at 100% effaced and 6 cm dilated for a month before you go into labor. You could also close back up to a 0. The cervix and its dilation really doesn't tell you much of anything reliable, even at 10 cms you might not birth for another couple hours.
  • I was at least a cm dilated for a month with my first. It doesn't mean anything.
  • I was 80% effaced and 3cm dilated for 3 weeks with my twins. You are very, very normal.

  • As others have said it can go either way, I was 1cm dilated with my DD and got to 10 in 3 hours. My mom on the other hand walked around for weeks at 4cm with me.
  • I was 2cm and 25% effaced with my second for 8 weeks.. ended up being induced with that one.

@kaylagoodson25 I literally posted a lurkers/newbies post earlier today. I know more about your cervix than anything else which seems weird.
Now to your question...My midwife practice doesnt even do cervical checks bc it means very little. Also babys arent full term until 39 weeks. Youre probably in it for awhile.

Ew. I really don't want to hear about a stranger's cervix, thanks.

I can't even find it in me to be snarky. I'm too freakin' exhausted.

    Thank you!

    That's all I got.
  • I'm always 1 damn cm dilated every pregnancy from 36wks until post term eviction.  I have never gone into labor.

  • OP, my main opinion is that you should use the remaining time to find a doctor who you actually trust more than a public Internet forum.
  • I have a friend getting induced tomorrow at 42 weeks. She's been 4 cm dilated for over a month. It means nothing. I honestly don't understand why they check routinely. It's just a mindfuck. Every doctor I've asked always says it's meaningless and just interesting if you are curious. I don't have them even check until I am in labor.

For induction purposes it matters, but I agree it is a mind fuck. I just know that for my inductions, if I am already dilated, then I do not need to go in overnight for cervidil.

Oh, yeah, for sure. I meant if you are just waiting to go into spontaneous labor it doesn't give you any useful information for when that will happen. It totally makes sense that they would need to know what your starting point is for an induction!

Definitely this. I also like to know just because mentally I have checked those cms off the list and only have X left once things get going.
