Re: Health and Fitness (5/12)

  • A little backstory on me - when I was pregnant 6 years ago I gained 70 pounds (40 water weight)  It took me a year to get it all off and I'd say I felt myself again in 2 years total.  4 years ago I discovered my 3rd love of life - yoga.  I don't do anything else but yoga.  All kinds - asthanga, vinyasa, arm balance, and basic.

I'm in maintenance mode on the weight side of things.  I don't get on the scale as much as I use to.  My goals now are probably more yoga pose related.  I'm always trying to push a pose to the next level of difficulty.  Right now I'm working on loosing up my hamstrings for left and right splits.  I need to work on my handstand more too.  I've avoided it for long enough.  I also want to make sure I get in at the studio at least 3 times a week.  I'm going to push myself to the harder classes instead of the easier ones.

I tend to drink and eat pretty healthy but I have that dang sweet tooth!  This week I have not been very creative with dinners so I need to get back on it.

  • @hdaley - I want to get back to the relationship you have with your body! Such a great thing to have your goals be yoga related!

I have a complicated relationship with my body these days... I had been at a steady weight for about 10  years but with the 2 pregnancies in 10 months, I gained a bit of weight and I just can't shed it... I'm still wearing the same clothes though. I wouldn't be that worried about my weight if my doctors weren't so worried but I feel like all they see is my BMI and it being on the tip of 'overweight'. But here's the thing - I eat so healthy. like 80% paleo/whole 30 compliant and I workout a ton - I've taught 5 barre classes in the last 48 hours - which is a workout... so I'm kind of at a loss. I also love being active - hiking, mountain biking, etc and when I limit calories - I literally cannot do those things.

What are your current goals? How have you been working on reaching your goals? Lose the 10 lbs I gained during the pregnancies. I'm eating well, sometimes tracking my calories on LoseIt! app and doing lots of barre and some Orange Theory classes

What have you been eating, and drinking? Share your recipes! A typical day for me looks like this:
    bfast - eggs and avocado
snack - almond butter and banana
lunch - dinner leftovers or big salad with a protein (tuna or chicken)
    snack - nuts
    dinner - a Sunbasket meal
(occasional wine or beer after dinner - about 2/week)

Do you have anything else you want to share with us?
The most frustrating thing for me right now is that my husband has lost a bunch of weight - all diet related, he hasn't worked out one time.... sure, he had more weight to lose but UGH!

  • @ladipale - you are very active IMO and eat well.  I know what you mean about not being able to cut calories if you want to do all that stuff.  I myself am extra hungry after a hard workout.  Do you think it might be a thyroid thing?

    What is orange theory?
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • @vlagrl29 - I've had my thyroid checked a few times over the last year - i have orders in to get in checked again just haven't made it to lab. Honestly - I probably need to focus on more sleep and less coffee

Orange Theory is a HIIT workout with treadmills, rowing machines and weights. I really like it! I'm just having a tough time balancing it with my new barre instructing schedule. I should be able to go more in the summer --- 5 more week!

  • What are your current goals? How have you been working on reaching your goals?

Lose 25 lbs.  I gained 70 lbs when I was pregnant with my DS 2 years ago. I've lost about 50 of that and want to lose the rest.  I've been doing weight watchers which I have done for the past 15 years.  I lost all my weight within 6 months of starting weight watchers and maintained until I got pregnant
I also teach jazzercise for exercise.  I used to run but have leg issues and can't anymore

What have you been eating, and drinking? Share your recipes!

no recipes just try to eat healthy and keep track of calories

  • What are your current goals? How have you been working on reaching your goals?

Over the past few years, I have varied in weight over and over by ~10lbs. I'd like to drop the 10 and then maybe another 5-10. Honestly it's more about getting back into better shape and feeling better because of it. My stress eating since August hasn't been great, so I turned over a new leaf with this cycle and started back on exercise routine of working out every day before work (4 days per week, usually stationary bike or lifting) and then swimming on at least one of my days off and going on a hike with DH on one of our days off together. It's been so nice! I want to get back to doing more yoga too as it's so good for the body and the brain. I'm already feeling better and I've dropped ~3lbs in the past 2-3 weeks. I'm also eating way healthier!

What have you been eating, and drinking? Share your recipes!

Breakfast: I make protein smoothies in the AM. I blend oranges with kale, chia seeds and flaxseed meal and pour the mix into cupcake trays to make "smoothie blocks" then in the AM, I throw one of those in a blender with almond milk, vanilla protein powder and some frozen fruit (berries & pineapple) and then drink that on my drive to work and in the early part of the day after my AM workout.

Lunches I've been eating homemade wraps with lavash bread, mixed greens and other veggies with some meat protein (chicken or turkey). I work 10 hour days (or more) so I also have been having a protein bar at work to help boost my energy since my job is pretty active.

Dinner can be anything from flax cereal with almond milk and dried fruit to salad, soup or chicken.

That's at least what life is like during the work week. Weekends are different, but still focused on healthy. I've discovered that I love eating lavash bread slightly toasted with almond butter and fig butter (TJs is amazing!).

I'm also almost 2 weeks and 4 days without chocolate. Crazy!

Do you have anything else you want to share with us?

I'm worried I may have restricted calories too much this cycle and my lining may have paid the price. I hope that is the case and maybe next cycle I will eat more and have a better lining. I am going to desperately hold onto that hope until I'm proven wrong. Time will tell...

Do you have any comments or suggestions to add to the thread?

Thank you @vlagrl29 for getting this started!

  • @Mack2342 - I thought I was the only one that gained that much while pregnant.  Didn't it just kill your self esteem?  It did mine.  I couldn't wait to get my body back.  I was at the gym 6 weeks pp.  1 of the reasons I wanted such a bigger age gap between 2 kids - apparently we need an even bigger age gap lol.

@weareturtles - you inspire me about how long you've gone without chocolate.  I caved 2 nights ago with come cookies.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • @vlagrl29. It absolutely killed my self esteem and still is considering I'm still carrying 20 of them.  While I was pregnant I developed arthritis in my hip and know have knee issue on that same side so I haven't been able to work out like I used to.  Also don't have the time to do as much as I did before.  I wanted to get as much off as possible before we started and I lost 50 in 6 months but that other 20 been hanging around.
  • My goals are to just be healthy mentally and physically. I was actually trying to gain weight because being underweight can make it harder to get KU. I hate to even tell people this because they think I am bragging. Trust me, I'm not. It's not easy not having boobs or having everyone ask you if you have an eating disorder all the time. I've just always been small. I suppose everyone has body issues.

I am also a yogi. I hate to sound too cliche but it really did change my life. I used to do various types of vinyasa classes at work and would go like 3-4 times a week. But they fired the yoga instructor to save money (I work at a college). I would love to do more professional classes but we are saving money for fertility treatments so I've been just doing it at home. I live in a rural area and while there are nice places in town, they are pretty expensive.

Im not really eating anything too special. We just eat as clean as possible. No frozen or canned stuff, and as many veggies as possible. I also try to eat health fats like avocado so I can keep my weight up in a healthy way, as my cholesterol is slightly on the higher end (more proof that being skinny doesn't mean you're healthy).
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @Mack2342 - A couple reasons I am pretty sure I gained so much weight was because I was so sick that all I could do was walk around the neighborhood.  I was also very hungry with her - like 6 meals a day and I wasn't strict about what I ate.  If I'm ever so lucky to get pregnant again it will be different because I'm very cautious about what I eat and I'm much more active now.  I got an umbilical hernia with her and symphis pubis dysfunction.  Basically my pubic bone did not close back up so I had to see a chiro for 6 months post partum to fix it.  Lots of weight on my small frame hurt my body.

@MooFish2364 - I totally agree that yoga is life changing.  I really don't know what I would do without it.

  • What are your current goals? How have you been working on reaching your goals? I’m trying to lose 20 pounds by sometime in August so that my RE will agree to do the progesterone biopsy before I go on my vacation.  I’m down 5 pounds.

I have been skating twice a week lately, and need to stick with that.  Plus need to do more treadmill, P90 weights, and pilates.

What have you been eating, and drinking? Share your recipes! Well, since DH’s ‘friend’ has caused me so much drama I’ve been off the band wagon the past week, but after this weekend I’ll be getting back into eating smaller portions and less junk. Plus more exercise.

The yo-yoing with weight has really gotten me down.  I’ll do really well, eat healthy and exercise and drop 10-15 lbs. Then I get pregnant and bloated, I’m exhausted so I don’t exercise as much even though I’m eating well (and doctor says I shouldn’t skate while pregnant since it’s a fall risk *sigh*), and then I miscarry and I’m depressed and I gain weight. It’s a cycle of epic suck. Plus I think my stomach will never go back to the way it was before pregnancies.

I normally think of myself as fairly fit but after googling proper BMI for a healthy pregnancy, I feel like a fat a$$! I'm 5'3" and about 155lbs (most of that being in my boobs  :D ) I'm curvy but I don't consider myself overweight. Stupid google. That being said, I haven't done an ounce of exercise in weeks. I normally stay active biking and going to the gym twice a week. I'd love to get into yoga but I'm super intimidated by it. It's very 'trendy' here on the west coast, not just for fitness but for social status, which drives me nuts. My sister does the 21 day fix work outs at home and loves it. I've tried a few, I like them and they are quick. Maybe I'll try the yoga ones at home.
  • @dpjennifer.  That sounds like me.  I do well and lose a few then sabotage myself when I don't get pregnant for a couple weeks then get  back on the wagon and do well.  These last two times I was pregnant I didn't gain any weight granted they were only 8 and 10 weeks. My pro is the self sabotage while TTC.  Such a vicious cycle.  I have 20 to go too. It sucks! I lost 3 last week so I'm trying to keep with the momentum
  • @40momma - Oh.. don't be intimidated by yoga! Where do you live? (I'm in Silicon Valley/ San Jose - I'd be happy to try and help you find a yoga studio!)

I am 170 lbs and 5'7" - so yeah, I feel you on the weight! I'm not even that curvy - super athletic

  • Ooh yay I love this thread! Thanks @vlagrl29

What are your current goals? How have you been working on reaching your goals?  Over the last few months I have been focused on making healthier choices to make sure my nutrition is helping and not hurting a potential pregnancy. It has sucked because I have given up on working out, I gained weight with every time I have been pregnant and then miscarried and been left with the weight after (not to mention the ice cream while miscarrying). Since I am now benched, I've been dropping the calories down, while still making the best choices in an effort to lose some weight before a next potential pregnancy.

What have you been eating, and drinking? Share your recipes!

A usual menu for me is:

Breakfast - Coffee with milk, 2 hard boiled eggs, apple with melted peanut butter. Sometimes a ham egg and cheese, or drippy egg w/ whole wheat toast.

Lunch - Lentils with red pepper, cucumber, tomato, green beans with balsamic dressing and feta cheese (I love this because I hate salads, but this feels more like a pasta salad with the lentils!) If you haven't tried lentils, do it and don't knock them - they have a good amount of protein (11g), dietary fiber, and a ton of folate which is great for pregnancy!  Or a tuna sandwich with veggies or leftovers haha.

Snacks - Nuts with dark chocolate nibs (have to have the chocolate), Stove popped popcorn, all kinds of fruit

Dinner - Usually some form of chicken with vegetables, sweet potato, brown rice. (homemade chicken meatballs, ground turkey tacos, grilled chicken breast, chicken sausages, cheeseburgers are usually repeats on our menu)

Do you have anything else you want to share with us?

I recently quit soda after being a long term addict. It was so hard but I'm so proud of myself.

  • @ladipale We eat pretty similarly! What is a sunbasket meal? They just put in an orange theory near us so many I need to try it!

@weareturtles The smoothie block sounds genius! I love swimming too – wish memberships weren’t so expensive. Do you have any information on how restricting calories can ruin the lining? I haven’t heard of this before, then again, I haven’t heard of a lot.

@moofish2364: You’re doing it right! I think just making healthier choices overall is the best “diet” and works the best.

@dpjennifer: If you’re willing to share, why won’t they do the progesterone biopsy if you’re not a certain weight? Congrats on 5 lbs down! I completely understand what you are going through with the up and down of being pregnant, gaining weight and then not being pregnant, with extra weight :(

  • Can I chime in even if I am self benched?
When I had my miscarriage, my goal afterwards to get me back mentally was to run a mini marathon. I have been running 5 days a week and progressively started running more the past month putting in over 30 miles a week. I did a 12 mile run earlier this week. I look at me running this race as something I can do to honor said baby.
Weight wise, I would love to even get back to this pre pregnancy weight because going back on the pill has wreaked havoc on my body. My periods have been irregular on it so it's more like every 8 weeks.
I don't follow a diet and have a sweet tooth which may be part of my problem.
@msstephanielynn good for you on quitting soda. That's a big vice for me. Any tips?
@40momma bmi isn't that accurate. Personally, if I stop exercising I drop a few pounds but that definitely doesn't mean I am healthier than what I was at a higher weight.
  • @rklinge0- that's awesome about your running.  I tried running a few years ago and it just hurt my body too much.  Mainly my shins and pubic bone.

Thanks @ladipale, I'm up in BC, Canada. There's about 8 yoga studios in my small town of 20,000 so there's tons of choices, I guess I just need to find one that's good for beginners. I feel like I have no patience for long stretches, which is probably why I really really need yoga.
Thanks @rklinge0 I know in my head the whole BMI thing isn't accurate and I should really step off google sometimes but it still makes you feel crappy. It's funny cause if someone were to guess my weight, they would usually guess about 140-145, when I tell them I'm 155 they never believe me. I guess I hide it well  :p
@vlagrl29 I used to run both street and trail. The street running is really hard on your body but trails tend to take a bit of the impact off the bones. Weird that your pubic bone hurt, I wonder if it had anything to do with your form/posture
  • @40momma - It's a weak spot for me.  During my pregnancy it widened but then never went back so I had to go to a chiro for 6 months to fix it.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • @msstephanielynn - Yes, I came across some research that suggested as much, but I cannot find it at the moment.

  • @40momma if you don't like long stretches you can always try a different type of yoga. There are really quite a few so you should be able to find something that you really like. I like vinyasa flow classes because you really don't stop moving the entire class. My previous yoga instructor had us doing about 40-50 yoga push-ups a class. I loved it.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • msstephanielynn Congrats on kicking the soda habit!  That’s a big one.

As for the progesterone biopsy… apparently according to the 2nd REI I’ve seen, my chance of MC is about 35% right now. Apparently my chance of MC with IVF right now is 30%.  If I lose 20 lbs. they think my chance of MC will be 30% as well. (Not that I believe any of this, and doctor’s with their happy BS about how low my MC rates are… hard pill to swallow after 4 MCs and a healthy pregnancy seems impossible). But anywho, after every test we’ve done I think medical science has given up on us and doctor’s no longer know what to say besides lose weight, because it’s about the only thing left that we can control. The reason for losing 20 lbs (besides the above) with progesterone is 2-fold from what I can understand. Basically they hope that if I lose the 20 lbs, my 35-37 day cycles will return to a ‘regular’ 28 day cycle. Which is never going to happen because when I was 55 lbs. lighter than my heaviest, when I first got AF, I didn’t have a ‘regular’ cycle.  But also because I guess progesterone levels can vary based upon your weight? So I guess if I’m eating healthier and exercising more and lost weight I could show different progesterone levels than what they currently are? That’s the best that I understand it.  Since doing the biopsy should get a good overall picture, instead of just seeing what it is for that exact part of that exact cycle. So, instead of getting the biopsy right away, then losing weight and my body and progesterone and cycle possibly all changing and needing to do it again… they wanted me to lose 20 lbs. first. If ANY of that makes sense?

vlagrl29 and 40momma That’s why I don’t run, and I roller skate instead!  It’s supposed to be better for your knees and body… of course, that’s when I don’t do something stupid and fall on my knee/tailbone/etc.

  • @rklinge0 - Your running sounds awesome! It's definitely what I would like to get back to. As for the soda, first step was getting it out of the house. My husband also quit with me so that helped. I just couldn't help myself if it was constantly there. The next step was to find a replacement - it was flavored seltzer for me. The first few weeks were the hardest. I thought about it every day and had headaches, but after a few weeks a few days would go by without thinking about it, days turned into weeks. I still haven't gone months without it, but knowing that I'm able to live without it for a while makes it that much easier to say no. PS - It's been great on my budget since a 12 pack store brand seltzer water goes on sale 4/8$! Good luck!

@dpjennifer - Ugh it sounds like they are really putting you through the ringer here. It would be interesting to see if something similar comes back for me when I meet with the RE. My cycles are also long (I get a positive OPK around 20/21 days) and I am also overweight. I suspect progesterone has something to do with it. I'll definitely loop back with you!

  • @dpjennifer I'm no doctor (I mean, I wish, I could have a pretty fancy house) but why haven't they just tried either pushing timed ovulation with clomid/biosimilar and following with supplemental progesterone? Or even progesterone alone after confirmed ovulation? Just curious because I would think that would be worth a shot?

  • I kind of wonder the same thing @msstephanielynn - although prog alone won't help you get pregnant.  It will hopefully keep a sticky baby.

  • My goal is to look strong, feel strong and set healthy examples for my girls. I'm a regular at spin and barre classes, walk pretty much everywhere and we meal plan around what we get in our farmshare.

  • msstephanielynn I have no idea. Unless it's because I don't have a problem getting pregnant, but rather the issue is with keeping the baby?  They also said that if we decided to go IVF or whatnot, we'd want to lose the 20 lbs. anyway to be in the best health we can be before dishing out the $$ for it.  So, I guess they figure the weight needs to go either way?

  • @dpjennifer I can totally understand that. Now I'm even more interested to see what comes back in my results/treatment plan - I have the same issue, no problem getting pregnant but staying pregnant is the problem. Speaking of which, I should probably be losing weight too :( I swear it's so much easier putting it on!

But if you take progesterone before pregnancy wouldn't that jump start your period?
  • Nope it actually can delay a period @Chawk17

    Oh I didn't know that!
  • @chawk17 - yeah I tried them for 1 month and I had to stop them so AF would come. My OB at the time thought it couldn't hurt to try them during my TWW but it just gave me too much anxiety wondering if it would mess with my body.
