We are in the final stretch of nursery construction! Yay! It feels great to finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. We agreed on a paint color. DH will be painting and puttingg up crown molding and baseboards today. The nursery furniture was delivered earlier in the week and is hanging out in our living room. I can't wait to move it in and set up the space. I guess you could say I'm in nesting mode? My to-do list for this weekend is to deep clean the house and organize my home office. If I feel up to it, I would love to take the dogs to the park so we can all get some exercise.

Unfortunately we don't live near family so celebrating Mother's Day will be via Skype. Happy Mother's Day to all you lovely mamas and mamas-to-be!

  • We just picked up a sidecar baby bed and a Moses basket on a rolling stand from a good friend. She also gave me a bunch of nursing tops, breast pads, lanolin, etc. This means we have 99% of what we need (for free)! All that's left is a change pad for our dresser.

We aren't setting up a nursery, because LO will share DS's room later. We do need to get our master bedroom cleaned up and rearranged to share with the baby. DH said he wants to get it all done this week, which I'm totally on board with. Pretty exciting! I also need to bring the baby clothes out of storage boxes, but that should just take an afternoon.

Tomorrow we will take DS to a swim class in the afternoon, then DH made dinner reservations and we will have a sitter. My life is pretty boring, and I love it!

  • We have birth classes today and tomorrow, which seems like an appropriate way to celebrate Mother's day.  We're also planning on installing some shelving in our garage, so we need to take some measurements and figure out how we want to do it.  Also, my SIL sent us a big box of used baby clothes and I'm itching to look at all of it see what's in there.

  • Rainy rainy rainy day here, so tball was cancelled. I have a sign for the nursery is like to stain, and I think I might have hubby get anything else we might need from the attic, so I can start sorting and washing it all. I want to go through our pantry and organize it/throw out the expired food. Other than the name sign, the rest of the nursery is done, but the rest of the house needs some reorganization.

Tomorrow we will celebrate mother's day all day. At home for me in the morning (I hope so, anyway...dh didn't do anything last year or the year before, so he'd better step it up this year). Lunch with MIL and dinner with mom. Looking forward to seeing everyone.
  • We're about 4 hours in to a 6 hour trip to my in-laws house. It used to be a 5 hour trip back when we could do it without stopping 4 million times. Attending my niece's baptism this afternoon. Then tomorrow we'll drive another 1.5 hours to visit my parents one last time before this baby arrives. My DS loves going to their house because my dad has tractors, but it's going to be hard to make that trip with a newborn and a toddler.

It's a quiet weekend here since my parents are overseas for a few weeks, and H's parents live overseas, where they don't even celebrate Mother's Day now anyway. So... no special plans. It's also supposed to rain like a b*tch tomorrow (a May Nor'easter), so I don't see us doing much other than working and possibly putting together some baby items that are trickling in. Still waiting for my Amazon completion discount since I recreated our registry with DH's account recently - that purchase will be the motherlode.

Im waiting for my husband to wake up. I need his help today all day.  I have to pack away half of my closet, empty out extras in the nursery , get my shower caulking fixed, send Amazon and ASOS refunds..

No wonder he's not waking up.
  • Today is a cold, rainy day, so I'm watching hulu and eating leftover pizza. H is going to a brewery with some of his friends for one of their birthdays, so I'm enjoying the time alone to watch all the shows that he's not interested in.  I should probably finish unpacking the rest of the boxes we have sitting in the living room, but I probably won't.

Tomorrow we'll go to the in-laws for Mother's day, since we spent it last year with my family. I'm sad, though, because I miss my mom and we've seen the in laws for the past two weekends so I'm kind of tired of them. I'm consoling myself with the fact that this means that next year I get to spend my first official Mother's Day with my baby and my own mom :)

Hope you all have great weekends!

  • Just got home from taking DS to soccer and am now trying to decide if I will be productive today or just relax.  Should probably pull out all the baby stuff and get it organized but we will see.  Tomorrow we will go visit DH's grandma and then probably do something fun as a family.
  • I'm child and husband free today! So I can get chores done, but still. Pretty excited. It's also rainy here, but the majority of my chores are inside anyway. I'm watching the Great British Baking show, baking some things, clearing out some totes, washing clothes, grocery shopping and cleaning the bathrooms today while DH and DD visit with my MIL.
  • Heading to Florida Tuesday for a family emergency. This will be DS' first time flying and fit some reason I'm terrified. Any tips for me are greatly appreciated!! He'll be two next month so I'm hoping it will be painless. We don't allow screen time but I'm thinking a movie is in order. Do their ears pop like ours? How can I avoid that. I'm probably WAY more nervous than I need to be.
  • @nktrodden826
How old is DS?  My coworker told me that when babies' ears pop, the suckling motion actually provides relief so one of the best things to do is nurse (or give them a pacifier) if they start freaking out about the ears popping.
  • @Twinkiedoll he'll be 2 in June. And of course I stopped nursing a few weeks ago and we broke the paci when he was probably 6 months old.. maybe a soppy cup that is hard to suck would have the same effect..

We never had any trouble with ears when we flew with DS. A sippy cup should work fine if you do. Is he getting his own seat? He'll be most comfortable if you install his car seat on the plane. For the airport, babywearing is the way to go. You should be able to wear him through security. Push the stroller with all your stuff on it. Then check the stroller at the gate.
  • Oh shit I didn't even think about the car seat even for the cars we're in. Tickets are so cheap $150 a person, round trip, nonstop. But it sounds like driving 12 hours makes more sense for the car seat, stroller/luggage, and having the car itself.
  • Just realizing wearing a toddler isn't a great plan at this point in pregnancy. LOL. Is your H going too? Put him in charge of carrying DS.
  • Flying is way easier with kids than the world pretends. Stickers keep my DS well occupied on flights. Also movies - and he doesn't get much screentime at home, either (maybe 2 hours/week). We have also had success with packing a little bag with new toys from the dollar store - little cars, stickers, etc. He gets a kick out of packing and unpacking the little bag (we use a little kids purse), and playing with everything.
For ears, we use a sippy cup with a built-in straw and never had an issue. I've heard lollipops can also work for toddlers, but have never tried it.
We have never flown with a car seat or bought DS his own seat. We fly middle of the day and have had good luck in getting an extra seat for free. But then other friends have told me that never works for them, so who knows. If you don't buy him a seat, when you check in, make sure you ask them to give you a bulkhead seat.
No sweat, @nktrodden826 you can do this easily!
  • @lph4248 my shower isn't until June so I am holding off on buying anything now but I am already anxious over the size of the pre-baby Amazon order as well. My poor bank account.

@manillabar have you watched The Handmaiden's Tale? We just started it last night but the first episode was pretty good. It's on Hulu and getting pretty good reviews.

@nktrodden826 sorry to hear that you have a family emergency. FTM here so I can only offer advice passed on from my family and friends but my sister downloaded this app that describes airports, going through security, and riding on an airplane (along with expected behavior) for my nephew's first flight and it was a big help. He was around 3 at the time. I know you said no screen time but maybe something like that will get your son excited and interested?

@oheliza44 We are shower-free lol so I'm just trying to buy when prices are good! But it's so hard, every time I think my list is ready to go, I discover something else I need to research and add (today, it was everything pump-related).
    ~DD arrived July 4, 2017~
  • @oheliza44 it's funny you should mention that because I just started watching it today! I was looking for something new to watch, and I figured I would just watch the first episode to see what it was about and now I'm 4 episodes in. I almost wish I didn't start this until there were more episodes. I'm too much of a binge-watcher, lol

  • This morning DH and BIL took our kids on a 4 hour hike (yay for nap time!). I ran a few finals prep workshops for local students at the library. Came home and now we are vegging on the couch while the kiddos nap.

Tomorrow will be a low key Mother's Day at home. Hoping the kids are in great moods so I can just lounge on the porch with DH while they play out front all day!

    Happy Mother's Day everyone!

  • It rained most the day yesterday and has been gloomy today. We wanted to take a day trip to the beach today (only 3 hour drive) but It didn't get over 70 until 1pm so we figured it would be cold. Thinking about maybe doing it tomorrow but I have a feeling it will be crazy on mothers day. Im just craving some sunlight.  Otherwise the only plans we have this weekend is putting the crib together and mowing our horribly overgrown yard. DH only gets weekends off and My schedule changes weekly so we're taking advantage that we get both days together.

  • @lph4248 maybe hold off until Memorial Day to see if anything goes on sale? I know Amazon is not like other retailers in respect to discounts so I am not sure if that would be useful or not.

i cleaned out my office today and found a bunch of unused giftcards from our wedding including a bunch to Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel that can be used at their kid's stores. I am so excited!

@manillabar I am sad you won't spend Mother's Day with your mom, I get that. I live across the street from my in-laws and when I have to spend the holidays with them even if I get to see my parents I do get a bit annoyed, I see them almost every single day...

i will say your night sounds darn near perfect. Sometimes I wish DH actually did things with friends.
  • @dcwtada Oy I forgot you're across the street from your in-laws. That is even worse than my situation! I definitely in general see them more than my parents, especially lately, but we try to be methodical about the holidays so that there are no hurt feelings.

Also, I definitely told my husband to stay out as late as he wants! haha, I love him but I love my alone time and he honestly rarely goes out with just his friends, so I try to encourage him when I can.

  • @OperaSingerMommy  How did babysitting go? Gals to hear the class was helpful! What kind of class did you take? I was thinking of taking a class before this delivery as well, but wasn't sure if it would be worth it since this also is my second one.

We were out all day yesterday and spent so much money. I keep reminding myself that this included the pump, which our insurance reimburses you for, and new glasses for DH (no Vision insurance and has had the same pair for 5 years). Really, only a small portion was non-essential baby, maternity, and other stuff. Our Sears had several clearance racks of $3.99 items that were also %50off. DS got 4 Carter's 2piece outfits, DH got severel shirts, and I got 2shawl-like sweaters that will be great for breastfeeding this fall for $1.99ea!
  • Thank you guys so much for the advice. It's been an awful day and the news keeps getting worse. Planning to leave around 11am today but we're now told to let them digest everything and we'll head down Tuesday so we're not bombarding everyone. I can't thank you guys enough for the support and encouragement. Happy Mother's Day!
  • We are leaving the beach today and meeting the in-laws at IKEA.

I'm spending the last few minutes in the hot tub, then we have to go pack the car.

    Happy mothers day!

  • @WeddingNotes13 It went great, thanks!  Toddler went right to sleep and little one was only mildly fussy and I only had to give her two bottles.  It felt pretty easy but I'm sure if I were a sleep-deprived post-partum mama and had to keep feeding the baby night I would have felt differently!  Glad we could give our friends a night out though, they seemed to have fun.

The birth class was called birth chemistry and it was focused on different labor positions and massage techniques for pain management.  I highly recommend something like that for everyone!  Even if you are planning an epidural or narcotics, there might be a period of time that you labor before you can get drugs so I think everyone would find it helpful.  I really appreciated that the teacher wasn't biased and had a lot of respect for hospital births and medicated births- she was just there to give us good options.  I left feeling very confident and I think DH feels more prepared this time too!

@OperaSingerMommy that's really cool that you were able to switch off babysitting with a friend. I don't have any family around, so I'm hoping to get a similar arrangement. It also sounds like it was good prep!

My weekend has been pretty tame. We had dinner with friends Friday and have bern trying to get things done around the house. Baby's room is almost finished, which is super exciting! It's also finally warming up, and I'm loving it!
  • About to head out to Mother's Day brunch with my in-laws.  I was up until 1:30 am working on a brief and then had trouble going to sleep last night so I'm pretty tired.  I skipped church this morning so I could get some more sleep.  I worked for another hour this morning before I hit the wall.  I'm definitely going to need some caffeine today.
