January 2018 Moms

2 under 2

Anyone else nervous to have 2 under 2? My husband and I wanted kids close together but I'm kinda nervous about chasing a toddler while keeping up with the demands of a newborn. Any mommas with this experience have any tips to share?

Lurking*** I have a 2.5 year old and a 2.5 month old. So a little bit of a larger gap, but I would say the biggest thing I've learned so far is that it's ok if the house isn't always clean. Take care of the kids first (and you) to be sure you all are getting the attention you need. I've noticed my toddler gets a little crazy jumping around or climbing all over me when he feels he needs more attention. At those times, baby goes in the swing or to Dad so I can do something special with DS. Also, if you plan to nurse, you can get some new books to read or games/shows on a tablet that can make your toddler still feel like they are getting mommy time and snuggles during feedings. It's also interesting to see how different each child is even at such young ages. So we have really just figured things out as we go.

  • I am for sure nervous. We were not planning on having children so close together. DD  will be 1.5 yr when we have a newborn. Very nervous how to figure out how to juggle that. Any tips or advice would be highly welcomed.
  • I am a little nervous, but mostly excited! DD will be almost 19 months old when this one is born.
  • I had my second when my first was 23 months old. My husband went back to school the day before the second was born. It was tense at times. I nursed but I just sat my toddler right next to me and we watched Netflix or the tablet. Don't feel guilt about leaning on screen time when you need help. Sometimes they both cry but hey, that means they are both breathing. It's important that the toddler doesn't get into trouble while you are tending to the baby and vice versa. Just try to baby proof as best as you can. Prohibit tiny choking hazard toys for your older one so you have less to worry about as your baby gets bigger. And the best advice I can give, baby wearing, oh man, I love the ergo baby.  If I wanted to clean my house I had someone strapped on me. And get a double stroller for when you need to get out of the house.
  • Mine are 18 mos apart. I have 3 words for you. Same Nap Schedule. Once the baby was 3 months I got them both down for afternoon naps at the same time and it was my sanity. So if it's possible, try to work for that goal. I was blessed with excellent nappers so I know it's easier said then done.

  • Thanks @trudytudy and @PhillymommaX2. I think this is definitely gonna teach me to chill on the everything HAS to get done and be perfect all the time. And I hope to God they will both take a nap at the same time. I will need an hour of quiet.
  • My first 2 are 15 months apart. Two and 3 are 30 months apart.  Number 3 and 4 will be 26 months apart.  I absolutely love it.  The oldest two are best friends.  And I find the closer gap an easier adjustment mentally.
  • I'm terrified of 2 under 2. DS will be 21 months when this one is born and he is a holy terror. DD and DS are nearly 4 years apart, so this is new territory for us.
Our little Red Raider is here and another is on its way!

DS will be 20 months when new baby is born. I'm really hoping this one isn't as needy, but DS nursed CONSTANTLY! I'm 100% on board with not worrying about the house.  I also do freezer meals which is a life saver. I plan on making a few weeks worth of meals in the 3rd trimester so that I can just throw something in the oven or crock pot and have dinner ready. I also hope to baby wear more, I had a moby wrap with DS but I found it difficult to wrap and also felt like he was going to fall.  (Any other suggestions for a newborn carrier??)  But mostly I'm just excited for my son to have a sibling that he will be close to.

@maueraa07    I love the moby wrap. Honestly the only way I could learn to wrap it was by YouTube videos. The picture guide that's included in the wrap is not very helpful.
  • I love my wildbird sling, @maueraa07!
  • I had 2 under 2, and now I'm going to have 3 three and under!
Honestly, though, that time is such a blur, I can't even remember how I got through! Lots of help from hubby and my MIL, I know that much, but after a week when we 3 were home alone all day...babe in the bouncy chair or in the wrap, and lots of books and cuddles for the toddler. I think. Who knows, man! It got easy once babe got on to a schedule. But before that...we went for lots of walks, I think? Wow am I ever no help!
  • @maueraa07 I just have a basic ergo baby sport that is simple and comfortable. I also have the baby ktan that is great for little babies but I don't like it as much when they are bigger.
