Cord Blood

Just starting to learn about cord blood banking and donating.  Is anyone planning on doing this or have any experience with this?  Would love to hear success stories about banking being helpful later on!

I used Viacord and banked DS's. I will bank this one as well. Though expensive at first, the banking for each year is only  $150 for us and you get free years for referring others. I have 2 friends that their children needed to use their cord blood to fight leukemia. My sister had banked with my niece and was able to use hers to fight a red blood infection my nephew had (you can use sibling cord blood). I think that if there are cancers or certain diseases in your or your husbands family,  it is worth it.

  • We are definitely banking. For my older children, we donated, and I am glad we did but wish we had banked. My husband had cancer last year, thankfully he is in remission, but it was a good reminder that you never know what lies ahead. It's expensive, but a worthy investment if you ask me.

  • I know a handful of people who have banked blood.  The running theme I've noticed is people (at least those I've spoken with) do it for the first but don't for 2nd, 3rd, etc.  I don't know if its because they decide to chance it that the banked blood would work if a sibling needed it or if it just fell off the radar with future children.

I have no idea if we will or won't.  I haven't really looked into it.

  • Lurking from the January '18 board -- This was our experience. We knew our son had a rare and very serious congenital heart defect, and cord blood is being used experimentally to treat that defect. There was also hope that someday a new heart could be grown for him in a lab, with his own cells, so there would be no chance of rejection. Harvard is currently working on that, and the first lab created hearts have already been made.

Babies who have certain rare birth defects get free cord blood banking, and that applied to our son's heart condition. I believe the initial processing fees and first five years of storage were going to be free.  I encourage anyone who gets bad news at the 20 week ultrasound to contact Cord Blood Registry and enquire about free storage.

In the end, we did not get to store his cord blood. I had a placental abruption during labor. When our son was delivered by c-section, there was no cord blood to collect--I'd bled out too much. It's rare for that to happen, but it's possible that delivery complications will make it impossible to collect cord blood. Just an FYI.
  • I did delayed cord clamping with DS and plan on doing it again with this one. In my opinion I'd rather let baby have the blood at birth, then take it from them in planning for something awful to happen later.

  • @kvacmak We did Prepacyte-CB. It allowed us to delay and still bank. DS cells still had amazing potency and will be able to be engrafed if ever needed.
  • Thanks for all of the info, ladies!

@acgonzalez22 Thanks for sharing! Hope your niece and friend's children are doing well now!

@PleaseSendPicklesNow Thank you for sharing your story.  I was reading your bio below your post, and I'm so sorry for your losses.  Praying you have the healthiest of pregnancies this time around.
