  • 1) How many weeks are you? 17

    2) How big is baby? Onion. Ew.

    3) How are you feeling? Pregnancy-wise, fine. Overall, still not awesome.

    4) Any appointments or tests this week? One week to go until ultrasound!

    5) Rants/Raves/Questions? N/A

    6) GTKY: Were you involved in any extra-curricular activities? Did you enjoy them? Wish you'd stuck with them longer? How will you approach encouraging your kids to participate? We didn't really have the option of extracurricular activities until high school and even those were limited. Freshman year I played JV basketball, cheered for JV football, ran cross country, indoor track and outdoor track, and played tennis. Our school didn't offer swimming/soccer/softball/etc. Sophomore year I narrowed my focus to running and tennis and I was only running by the end of it because I wanted a scholarship to get out of my small town. So I did that through college and then quit. I'm glad I did it, it taught me a lot, made me a lot of friends (I met DH on the XC team at college), but I don't miss it either. I liked running because I was good at it, but realized after college that I didn't run because I enjoyed it. It was basically my job (run for scholarship money) and then I just found a new job after college. Oh, I did Girl Scouts all the way up through graduation, too and got a scholarship for the gold award. and took piano/organ. DH and I hope our kids run (because then we'll be in and out on weekends with the rest of the weekend to do whatever haha) but we're open to whatever they're good at. DD is 3 and we don't have her in soccer or gymnastics or anything yet because we just want her to enjoy playing in general. Maybe gymnastics or dance next year since it's right next to preschool. But we'll see. Sorry about the novel!

  • 1) How many weeks are you? 17 weeks

    2) How big is baby? Pomegranate! (Much better than an onion, ;) )

    3) How are you feeling? Pretty good over all. Tired and a little back soreness. Headaches are disappearing though.

    4) Any appointments or tests this week? Had a regular appointment Monday and took a sneak peak for the sex. We are having a girl! DS is so excited.

    5) Rants/Raves/Questions? Dad's response to finding out I'm having a girl "Well at least you have one of each and you can stop now." Seriously.

    6) GTKY: Were you involved in any extra-curricular activities? Did you enjoy them? Wish you'd stuck with them longer? How will you approach encouraging your kids to participate?
I did almost everything my school offered me. I played Softball 7th-12th grade, Basketball 7th-10th, Ran Track 7th-11th. I was in Choir and did Theatre too (we had two productions a year). I was also active in Yearbook and had a job. I do wish I had stuck with band and decided earlier that some of the athletics weren't really necessary. By the time I got to college I had all of this free time and could breathe and it took me awhile to decide to get involved in anything there.

I think for my kids I want to encourage them to really decide what they like and focus on a few things they actually enjoy versus being involved for the sake of being involved. I feel like my parents never really asked me if I LIKED doing all of those things. If I had to go back and do it all over I would stick with Choir, Band, Theatre and maybe Softball or Track and that's it.

    1) How many weeks are you? 17 Weeks

    2) How big is baby? Pomegranate

    3) How are you feeling? Not too bad.  Still with the back pain from the bad discs, but otherwise ok.  Have had an uptick in nausea this week, which is balls because I've been lucky to escape all of that during the first trimester.

    4) Any appointments or tests this week? Had a fairly useless appointment today with the GD nutritionist.  I'm going to speak with the OB about not going back to her.  Seriously, I learned more about nutrition when I volunteered at my niece's 3rd grade class.

    5) Rants/Raves/Questions?

    6) GTKY: Were you involved in any extra-curricular activities? Did you enjoy them? Wish you'd stuck with them longer? How will you approach encouraging your kids to participate?

I was involved in a service organization for young women called Rainbow from the age of 10-21.  I also was the manager of the cross country team for one year and the wrestling team all 4 years of high school.  I'm not athletic at all, but fully support those that are. I participated in FFA all 4 years in high school as well.  I competed in Science Olympiad, Knowledge Bowl and other "short-term" clubs/teams like that too.

I think that I didn't see the value in those clubs/activities in developing life skills and friendships.  If I could go back, I'd have loved to have mentoring on how to get the most out of my activities.  I think I was just along for the ride for most of it, until I was done or almost done.

I plan to encourage activities by being open to introducing a range of activities, but not so many that my kid doesn't have time to be a kid. Also, be open to them trying something and saying that it's not for them. I'll never be the one to say that my kid can't stop doing something he doesn't enjoy. My niece is 14 and is so busy every day from 6:30am to 9pm, quite literally.  It can't be healthy to not have any free time.

    2) How big is baby? Mango, which I happen to have on my counter.  It's really neat to have the actual fruit to compare it to.

    3) How are you feeling?  Sleepy, cranky, hungry, gassy....you know, the norm.

    4) Any appointments or tests this week?  Nope, but we have our AS next Thursday!  I'm really excited.  DH and I are really wanting a boy.

    5) Rants/Raves/Questions? I feel like I'm so behind in preparing for the baby.  We did clean out our spare room and are ready to put the crib in and start prepping.  But that's it.  And apparently I'm supposed to be starting to look for a pediatrician around this time.  The hospital gave me a list of doctors, so it's not that I don't have a starting point.  And we need to start looking around for a car seat.

    6) GTKY: Were you involved in any extra-curricular activities? Did you enjoy them? Wish you'd stuck with them longer? How will you approach encouraging your kids to participate?  I was the band/choir/drama nerd and I loved every minute of it.  I was in band and choir since fifth grade.  In high school I was really involved in marching band, concert band, jazz band, choir, show choir, musical, and the school play.  I have to say those were some of my favorite memories of high school and made some close friends.  I did try track for one year and it was okay, but not my thing at the time.  I think I'll encourage whatever my child wants to pursue, regardless of the activity.  I will encourage them to try something if they say they are interested, but the moment they really truly do not want to do it, I won't push it.  I provide music lessons as part of my practice and I see so many parents push their child to learn to play an instrument when the child has no interest and it's torture for them (and for me...lessons become more of a hassle than anything).  If my kid wants to learn to play an instrument, great!  If not, great!  I'm sure he or she will find something that will interest them.

  • 1) How many weeks are you?
    16 weeks

    2) How big is baby?
    Avocado

    3) How are you feeling?
Most days I feel pretty good like my pre-pregnant self, but every now and then the fatigue sets in like we're back in the first trimester. I shared with my students today that I am pregnant so that was a big relief. They were very excited and happy for me which was cute (and makes me wonder why I was even nervous to tell them). My bump is pretty noticeable at this point which I'm enjoying much more than I would have anticipated (yay looking more pregnant and looking less like maybe I ate too much pizza).

    4) Any appointments or tests this week?
None this week, but I finally have one next week! This 5 week stretch between appointments feels far too long.

    5) Rants/Raves/Questions?
Rants- I really, really miss playing volleyball lately. I was so tired in the first trimester that I didn't really think about it. Now that it's outdoor season and my husband is playing multiple nights a week again it is a constant reminder that I can't play for months.

    6) GTKY: Were you involved in any extra-curricular activities? Did you enjoy them? Wish you'd stuck with them longer? How will you approach encouraging your kids to participate?

I was involved in a lot of extra curricular activities in high school (volleyball, basketball, marching band [colorguard], winterguard, stage crew for drama, outdoor track, etc etc), but none when I was little. I stuck with winterguard in college and taught drum corps and marching band throughout college and beyond. Once I stopped teaching drum corp I got back into volleyball and that has been my go to activity. Pre-pregnancy and grad school I was playing 3-4 days a week, and it's how I met DH. I miss it.

I liked what you said @jessafishy about kids focusing on a few activities they enjoy and not doing them for the sake of doing them. I would like my future kids to play sports and enjoy doing things outdoors like hiking and camping...which I imagine will happen because those are all things DH and I do regularly. Mostly I just want them to have an active, healthy life style and enjoy what they do

    1) How many weeks are you? 18 weeks

    2) How big is baby? The size of an artichoke

    3) How are you feeling?  Good. Not very pregnant but I feel large in an unflattering way. Like I still don't really look pregnant and I'm still in the is she or isn't she stage. Poo.

    4) Any appointments or tests this week? Nope. 1.5 weeks until my anatomy scan, which I'm really looking forward to

    5) Rants/Raves/Questions? I still can't feel movement. And this is my 3rd!!!  It's starting to bug me. Like what if something is wrong?  They didn't say anything at my dating u/s about placenta placement so I wouldn't think that would be why I don't feel movement yet. Any day now baby!

    6) GTKY: Were you involved in any extra-curricular activities? Did you enjoy them? Wish you'd stuck with them longer? How will you approach encouraging your kids to participate?  I played volleyball in jr. high but wasn't very good so stopped playing in high school. I focused on music instead and I was very good. Not to brag, but I was the best in my class. I did band, choir, jazz band, and show choir. I also did theater. And got leading rolls all 4 years of high school. I took voice and piano lessons from 5th-12th grade. I did enjoy it. It helped that it was something I was good at which helped self esteem and self value. I did some in college but mostly just hobby. I didn't want those as careers so I'm happy to just be casual with music now. Maybe someday I'll try community theatre after my kids are grown. I'm happy to let my kids pick what they want to do. I want to encourage them to pursue what they are interested in whether that's sports, music, or you know, geocaching. Whatever they want to do, I want them to try. I will make them take something extra curricular during high school regardless of what it is. They have to be in SOMETHING.

  • @ehepner this is my second and I had a few days where I was pretty sure I was feeling the baby and then it went away. It's driving me nuts - I've been sick and it just makes me so nervous that something is wrong. I have an ultrasound next Wednesday, but come onnnnnnn baby, start dancing or something already!!
