High Blood Pressure/Preeclampsia Complications

I have been on the Bump app but never posted so I'm really sorry if I'm in the wrong place. I read the instructions post but got confused I'm gonna blame it on prego brain, stress and lack of sleep!

Wondering if anyone is dealing with high blood pressure or Preeclampsia? I have been to labor and delivery twice in last two weeks with high blood pressure but all my labs came back clear so no official preeclamsia diagnosis. I've been taken out of work early and put on partial bed rest. Also gave me Betamethasone injection for baby's lung development just in case we end up delivering early.

Anyone with experience in this: Do they typically induce you early? Do they schedule c sections? Any personal stories would be helpful. I'm 34 weeks today and have had completely normal pregnancy up until now thankfully. Kinda stressing a bit which I know isn't helpful in the blood pressure department lol

  • Ahh lol sorry it cut off my post the first time-- I just updated it!
  • Yes, I was induced at 38.5 weeks with my first for pre-e. If your labs/urine are all clear, you could just be dealing with PIH (pregnancy induced hypertension). Your doctors will keep monitoring you, maybe set up some NST (non-stress tests) between now and delivery, but unless your BP gets uncontrollable, they probably won't induce before 39 weeks.

  • I have higher blood pressure with no pre-e.  My midwife says I should shoot for a minimum of 80g of protein and LOTS of water.  The protein and water bond to help lower blood pressure. It has helped with my 2nd and 3rd pregnancies and it is helping so far for this one. My BP hasn't gotten as high as it did with our 1st.
  • I had pre-eclamsia with DD3... It was caught at 36 plus a few days.  I went to the doctor Monday for my appointment, had blood work, and by Wednesday they called me to get to the hospital for immediate induction.  I labored until Friday, when they decided I needed a c-section because I had not dilated past 2 cm.

I was just told yesterday that it looks like I am already developing pre-eclamsia again with this pregnancy (I am 31 weeks, 2 days).  My doctor's have had me on BO medication and baby aspirin to try to prevent pre-e this time.  Anyways... yesterday I had protein in my urine and elevated BP.  So today, I am doing a 24 hour urine, have bloodwork tomorrow, and a follow up appointment Thursday where the doctor said we would evaluate the labs and consider next steps.

I have really awful anxiety, and because I have been through this before, I asked my doctor what all of this meant... what she was thinking...etc.  She said that as a last resort we would deliver since I am so early.  She said we would likely try bed rest and I would be referred to a specialist.

  • I had high BP with DS1.  I was put on bed rest at 35 weeks and then we scheduled an induction at 38 weeks... but he decided he didn't want to go through that and came early.  I, like you, had a very uneventful pregnancy before hand and didn't quite know what to think with this diagnosis.  Everything turned out fine, however, and we have a happy, healthy boy turning 4 today!
  • I had gestational hypertension diagnosed at 26 weeks with DS. Was hospitalized over night and given the betamethasone shots, put on an anti-hypertensive (nifedipine) and once weekly NSTs until I delivered naturally at 38w4d. They would have definitely induced me if I became pre-eclamptic (protein in urine and/or symptomatic [vision changes, bad headaches, sudden onset of swelling]) or eclamptic (seizures), but fortunately my urine stayed protein-free and I had no symptoms.

Wish I had an exact answer as far as what may happen with your elevated blood pressure. I think it would be best to check-in with your provider about options likes meds vs. induction, different providers have different preferences based on your lifestyle, how far along you are, what's been successful for their patients in the past, etc.

This pregnancy I've had no blood pressure issues so I'm now on the regular low-risk prenatal appointment schedule. :)

I am going through this now. I have had 2 elevated blood pressure with no signs of pre e. My labs x2 have been fine and no protein in urine. I just did a 24 hour urine this weekend and waiting for the results. I am now doing twice weekly NST and bpp as well as checking blood pressure daily.

If my blood pressure stays okay i will have the baby at 39 weeks. If it spikes or trends up might be 37-38 weeks. Any signs of pre e will be immediate birth. I am also 34 weeks currently not on any sort of bed rest.

  • Thanks for all the feedback ladies. I have been in touch with my Dr. and it seems like a wait and see situation.  It's really nice just knowing you aren't the only one maybe dealing with this.

My apologies, like I said in my original post. This was my first time asking anything on here and found the guidelines confusing when I was writing this. Which was early, hadn't had much sleep and was pretty stressed about this since I was discharged from the hospital last night.

It was an honest mistake and I was happy most were willing to be supportive even if I was out of the guidelines. I really appreciated their kindness
