GTKY- How did you meet your SO?

I noticed that we didn't have any GTKY threads today, and I always love to hear these stories! It's usually my favorite thread at the start of a BMB.
So, how did you meet your SO?

Re: GTKY- How did you meet your SO?

  • This is actually the GTKY on the Mon/Tues Ticker Change threads, so I'll copy/paste my response.

I was actually dating one of his friends and we met up in the bar at a concert venue. We quickly became fast friends. A while after my relationship was over, we continued to be close and it developed into a romantic relationship shortly after.

I am the most long-winded person of all time, so I will try to be succinct (but since this is my favorite story to tell, it may be hard).
DH and I have known each other since infancy. Our grandparents were friends, my mom and his dad grew up together, and his grandparents lived next door to my aunt/uncle. So, needless to say, we ran into each other a lot during childhood. We spent most summers at the same pool, and I ALWAYS thought he was cute. He, on the other hand, thought I was an annoying little girl. We hit adolescence, and then didn't really see each other until after high school graduation, when our mutual friends started hanging out together. He had gone from cute to gorgeous, but he still had NO interest in me. He also found me tolerably attractive (my words, not his), but thought I was a "brat" (his words, not mine), so he avoided me. I'm very persistent though, and by December of that year (2004), we were dating. We knew pretty quickly that we would get married, but waited until 2010 to tie the knot (there was NO WAY I was getting married at 18). We spent the next six years traveling and having fun, and then welcomed our beautiful daughter in January 2016. Now, we're expecting baby #2! We've been together for going on 13 years, and I like to say we grew up together in those years. He's my best friend, and the best companion to raise our babies with. I think he likes me too, but he definitely still thinks I'm a brat!

Sorry, @missblaze! Haha...I guess since I didn't have a ticker change, I didn't open up the thread. And sorry to anyone else who answered there!
  • We were friends in high school, and I dated his best friend. When we broke up (badly) DH was the one who was there to comfort me since he thought his friend was a jerk about it. A couple years later we started dating and got married 4 years later!
  • We both worked at the Gap in hs/college and became really good friends. After about 6 years of flirting and being  friends, I got drunk one night and kissed him.  Then we casually began hooking up but he was living away at school so we only got together if he came home or if I visited for the weekend. As soon as he graduated and moved back home we made it official. We dated for 5 years before getting married and have now been married for 6 years with 2 kids and one on the way!

  • My husband and I went to college together. We were introduced through mutual friends a couple of times sophomore/junior years and had classes together but never spoke or hung out. Senior year we were both at the homecoming dance and our groups just happened to dance next to each other and after that we started chatting on facebook a little. We starting seeing each other non-exclusively for a couple of months and then started dating exclusively right before Christmas break. I ended up changing my after graduation plans to stay with him in the town we went to school in because he had gotten a job offer. We moved in with each other 6 months after we started dating which I never thought I would do! We got engaged a year and a half after moving in together and married almost a year after that. Now we've been married for almost 5 years!

Here is the longer story. . .  I had posted it on the Ticker Change posted.

I was dating this guy and we broke up for the last time in March.  CAlled my friend and said needed to get out of here, do you want to go away on vacation.  We booked a trip to Cancun, Mexico.  I think we were there for about a day or two.  The resort had asked for those who wanted to play water polo and there was this guy there  I asked him to throw the ball harder, because I could take it, I am pretty athletic.  I didn't know that he wasn't.  Since that moment, we have been together and it has been 15 years now.   He was the first guy who didn't drive me crazy and who would have thought that a girls trip to cancun that we would still be together today.
  • We met in 2007. I had just moved back down to a small town to finish college after taking a year off. I was playing online on a website called Face the Jury when I got a message from a guy who had just graduated from Tech with the same degree as I was working on and had just moved back home to help his dad after surgery. We exchanged phone numbers and AIM (LOL) screen names and talked for about a week. The next weekend, since my roommates were out of town, we met up at the bowling alley (seriously, small town... Nothing else to do) and we immediately hit it off. The next week, we made a bet on the AFC championship (he's a Pats fan and I had a feeling the Colts were going to win) and I won that bet. We met up for date and decided to move forward with a relationship. 10 years, almost three kids later, here we are. :)
Our little Red Raider is here and another is on its way!

  • I swiped right!  :D I was actually on another date (that was going very poorly) when he sent me a few messages. I guess this guy I was on the date with assumed I was staying over and fell asleep at like 9pm (it was weird). My now DH was texting me and somehow the next thing I knew it was 2am and we had been texting for 5 hours. I was an hour away from where I (and he) were living. I suggested we meet up for a super early breakfast and he was like now? seriously? I drove an hour back at 3 am and we attempted to go to a diner that was closed and ended up walking across grounds to get coffee and spent the whole (exhausted) day together and couldn't get enough. He likes to tell people we met at a play.

DH and I actually met at a wedding! The bride is in my sorority pledge class and DH went to jr high and high school with the bride and groom. It was a Friday wedding and the bride/groom went and did pictures after the ceremony before the reception, so the guests went to the reception hall where they had very little food and a lot of booze. I noticed DH staring in my direction for a while after a while and finally went over and asked him if he planned to stare at me all night or if he was ever going to ask me to dance. He looked a little surprised and asked me to dance (I learned later when he gets pretty drunk he kind of stares off into space, so he likely wasn't actually staring at me....and without liquid courage I wouldn't have gone up to him like that so we thank our friends every year for the unbalanced booze to food ratio lol). We danced a little bit and went out separate ways, then after the reception at a bar where most of the friends went after we started to (drunkenly) talk, and one thing led to another. The first month we knew each other we racked up a 6500 minute phone bill (back when that was an issue, thankfully we were both on AT&T plans so it didn't cost me to go over my plan!). We found out that one of my good friends from HS dated his roommate for several yrs in college, and that one of my sorority sisters dated one of his fraternity brothers so we'd actually been at a few of the same parties in college but never met until the wedding (which was good for both of us). We dated for about 3 yrs and got married in 2009!

My SO and i went to church and high school together but he's three years older than me. He was the cool guy with giant pants who played hackey sack and a bass guitar in bands. Alas we were just really good friends as he was with someone else. They were actually engaged for a while.

Fast forward to Easter five years later and i walk into church to see this guy with a great leather coat (similar to @PleaseSendPicklesNow ) and amazing curly hair. He turns around and it's him. My highschool crush.

We talked (he broke it off with the other girl) and exchanged numbers. His little sister met me and asked  outright "are you going to marry her?" To which he replied "i think i'll date her first".

We dated for about 2 years and married in 2007 so it will be our 10 year wedding anniversary this year! We have a dog and a 3yo little girl. Life couldn't be better (except for the nausea)
  • Through a mutual friend. I was coming out of a bad relationship and needed a rebound. My friend said, "I know the perfect guy, he's just at desperate as you are." She texted him my number and he called me seconds later. I looked at her wide eyed and said, "What did you get me in to?!" We went on a blind date to the movies. We were only 17 at the time. When I dropped him off at his dads house afterward (he didn't even have his license yet!) he turned to me and said, "This could work." And just over 13 years later, it still works. Most of the time. Sometimes he's a douche canoe.

My husband is actually my ex-husband's best friend from childhood. Like, ex's parents are super close to current husband best friends. He was in my first wedding party.

Back in 2010 we moved to the same town, and started hanging out more regularly; he and I discovered we have a ton in common. About a year and half after my divorce -- and after I'd long been interested in him, with him being pretty wary -- we decided to give it a shot. Once we settled into the relationship and the wariness abated, we discovered that it simply fits.

We were married on our second anniversary, and will be celebrating our first wedding anniversary here in July. So it worked out.  :)

Edited because I forgot to add: everyone is cool. Ex, husband, and I hang out on the reg, we all coparent together, and my ex in-laws even came to the wedding.
  • Long story short: I was in an emotionally abusive relationship when we first met. We both worked together at a grocery store. My other relationship ended and we got to know each other so much better. We hit it off and the relationship just seemed so effortless with him and it was a huge plus that he treated me like a queen (10 years later and he still does <3 )

We met in high school! He was from Canada and his mom remarried someone in the US and he moved to live with her, we met the first day of our junior year. We started dating in January after flirting for months, broke it off the following November,  and got back together the next September after starting University. We were going to different schools about an hour apart. Been together ever since! If we hadn't had the time apart during senior year I don't think we'd be together today.
Here we are almost 6 years later with university degrees living in Canada!

  • I am loving reading these cute stories! Mine is super boring...we met in college via mutual friends. I honestly don't even remember the first time I met him, because we were just always seeing each other "around." One night I got drunk at a party and gave him my number and made him promise to call me (even though I hadn't really displayed any interest in him prior?). Idk. We're married now, so my drunk self clearly knew what she was doing.

  • My fiancé was originally my boss..
We worked in a restaurant, I was a server and he was the owner. I was dating a fellow server who was a real piece of work, he and my "best friend" (also a server) ended up sleeping together behind my back. Restaurants are real sexual cesspools lol
Needless to say I was in a pretty rough place, my now fiancé tried to hook me up with his roommate at the time which did not go well. He was a nice guy, but we just weren't compatible. My fiancé and I became better friends after that and one thing led to another. Going on 4 years now! I finished my degree and now work as a victim advocate :). Hoping to get married in Fall 2018!

We were in undergrad together. He liked me from the beginning, but I thought of him just as a friend. He made it very clear during our friendship that he liked me and would "joke" that he wanted to take me out to dinner anytime. Finally I realized that our friendship had grown and I liked him too. We've been together ever since!

  • We met in 2009.

I was in college for the second time after going through a rough patch of depression and going crap job to crap job. After a particularly rough patch I decided to go back to school, my Grandfather had passed away and I had moved in with my Grandmother so I could spend what money I was making on school.

I began school and had it in my head I would focus 99% on school...not bothering to socialize - I needed to focus on myself, the other 1% being yet another crap job to pay my way through. Towards the end of my second-last semester, bored one day after work I decided to log in to an old dating profile and delete the account, my thought being I was done actively looking for someone. Just for kicks I decided to read the messages. Up pops one that impressed me...out of all of them it was articulate and had effort put into it, more than just a 'Hey, wut up?' He was cute too. We had a lot of the same similarities and life goals and something told me I should message back. We started talking on messenger and that went off and on for several weeks...mostly with him initiating. I was focusing on end of semester projects and exams. Finally, when it was all over I agreed to a date. He had asked to pick me up and take me an hour or so away to another city (a friend owned a theater there), I was unsure as I didn't really know him. It just so happened that I was talking to another friend at the time and mentioned that this guy I was chatting with did WW2 reenactments as this friend was into reenactment too. My friend asked what this guys name was and as it turned out...they knew each other. My friend vouched for him so I allowed him to pick me up. I felt comfortable and at ease with him right away. When I got home from our first date I told my Grandma..."This one is going to work out." she told me not to get ahead of myself...but less than three years later we were married!

  • We met in high school. I was in 10th grade and he was in 12th. One of my friends kept mooning over this guy but he basically ignored everyone, but then I joined the theater tech crew and met him too. We ended up dating before the end of the school year, and got married when I finished college. This summer will be our 9th wedding anniversary, and as of this spring we've been together 15 years.

  • Love hearing these cute stories! @JuliaGoolia719 - what sorority are you in?

My husband and I met playing kickball after undergrad. It was an adult kickball league more focused on drinking / flip cup than actual kickball. The last week of the regular season, my friend spotted him, thought he was my type, and literally pushed me into him on the dance floor. We danced for one song and then I ran away. About 3 months later he saw me at a local bar and approached me. He got my number, our first date was about 1 week later, and the rest is history!

  • We met at work. I chased him because although the feelings were mutual, he was afraid to risk his job and ask me out. We kept things very secretive for a long time.

Once we knew it was serious and had moved in together, we told our supervisors who were very supportive. Three years later, happily married and working for the same place.
