Ditto on not loving WTE. I've only read months one and two, since I'm in month two, and I feel like I already knew everything they were saying just from being on here/common knowledge/Googling since my BFP.

I'm also planning on Expecting Better being my next pregnancy book.

  • Ina May's guide to Childbirth is great for labor. As far as pregnancy, I never did find a great book.
  • I can't fully remember the title but I read a book during my first pregnancy that was hilarious! I think it was 'The Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy' but I'm not completely positive. I second @jlemons-2 suggestion about Ina May's book too. It's fantastic for easing your mind about labor.
  • The Mayo Clinic book was great. I plan to get the most current edition soon.

  • My mom is a nurse, so I paged through her mom/baby textbook. Honestly, it was super informative! Way better than the pregnancy books I read.

@MJDsquared @breezybee I loved Expecting Better... I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on it when you finish. It definitely had some interesting thoughts about things that most people have on their 'no list' during pregnancy...

  • @abcola I know she's lax on alcohol and that made the book really controversial when it came out. Honestly, I don't think I'll drink at all because I don't think I'll want it badly enough/DH is super crazy about those "rules," but it certainly won't turn me off of her book. I'm curious what other thoughts she has!

  • @abcola haha that's partly why I'm reading it. I'd like to hear how bad are the "bad things" that you can't have.
And @MJDsquared I plan to have a small glass of red wine with dinner very rarely later in my pregnancy if the mood strikes.  Haha although currently I can't stand the smell of wine, so we'll see how that goes :)

@MJDsquared She is lax on everything... but she gives all of the research to back it up. I think it puts everything into perspective and also gives you more knowledge on how to handle any sort of 'no list' item... You have to make the choice for yourself. I've had a couple of sips of my DH's drink and that has been fine so far. I probably wont drink in public, but might have a small glass of wine at home in the 2nd tri. I also think her discussion on food was good. Overall, I feel that knowledge is power and it gives you tons of knowledge and made me feel more powerful...

  • Thanks so much, everyone!  I will definitely look into these!  B)
  • For what it's worth, my doctor's office gives all expecting parents "Our bodies, ourselves: Pregnancy and Birth."  I like it a lot more the WTE, which I have from a friend.

Oh, Also I just wanted to also second what @alysapuggles suggested which is the Mayo Clinic Guide in the most recent version (although I think the most recent is from 2011). I think it might be better laid out that WTE, and would be used as more of a reference book. I bought it and like it so far for the basics.
Also, I picked up Bumpology at the library and while it's nice to flip through I dont think it's worth spending the money on.
I've started getting books from the library and think for some of these books it has been a lifesaver than spending the $$ on a mediocre book.

  • My doctor recommends the Mayo Clinic book over What To Expect.  I've skimmed WTE and Mayo Clinic, but it was a while ago.  I might need to do it again.  I also bought "What To Eat When You're Pregnant" and "What To Expect Eating Well When You're Expecting" that I might browse again and look for some yummy recipes.

I also want to try and read Expecting Better, but we'll see if I get there.

I LOVED Expecting Better, because like you mentioned, it is completely evidence based and makes me feel much more empowered to make my own decisions in pregnancy.

I also thoroughly enjoyed Ina May's book on labour and birth, the birth stories were so uplifting. Her documentary is great too.
