Re: Healthy Habits Check in Week of 5/8

  • 1. What healthy habit are you working on? getting to the gym/working out at least 3x a week, healthier breakfasts

    2. How is it going? well I had coffee for breakfast today, so not a great start, but I have plans for getting to the gym today-Wednesday. I did buy some oats to make oatmeal as suggested last week (thanks again @50Wife @pebbledam @Amphibious22) so that's a win I guess?

    3. What is a small win from last week? um...I managed to only eat 3 mini snickers instead of 4? It was a rough week. I was tired Monday and I just couldn't catch up on sleep...

    4. GTKY: If you didn't have to sleep what would you do with the extra time? well, i would be more likely to make it to the gym... I would probably split the time reading all of the books I have on my kindle but haven't gotten to yet and catching up on all the shows/movies on my Netflix list. I might clean my house if I was feeling motivated.

@Avrilmai now you just need to make the oats  ;)
and not going for that 4th snickers is a win in my book!! At that point I'd be like well shit, I already had 3...might as we'll go for 4

    1. What healthy habit are you working on? 21 day fix eating and drinking more water

    2. How is it going? Great. I really kept on track last week and I cooked for this week already so I'm ready to rock and roll. Although right now I'm starving.

    3. What is a small win from last week?  sticking with it! I did it!

    4. GTKY: If you didn't have to sleep what would you do with the extra time?
Just more adult things...cook, clean, laundry, actually work out...
  • 1. What healthy habit are you working on? Giving up Diet Coke and drinking more water.

    2. How is it going? Slowly but surely making progress! I had only about 2 Diet Cokes all week last week! Keep in mind that months ago I drank like 4-5 Diet Cokes a day (omg so gross). I've gotten some pretty S'well bottles so I have cold water nearby, and I've finally discovered that I can make myself drink water if it's nice and cold. So the expensive water bottles were totally worth it.

    3. What is a small win from last week? Slow but steady progress!

    4. GTKY: If you didn't have to sleep what would you do with the extra time? Read, shop online, knit, do other crafts. Or clean the house, because that's something I never have time for.

@RVAmom315 great job on the weight loss!!
13 reasons why was a great show. Heard on the radio this morning that there will be a second season.

@vtgirl899 halo top is so good! I've only tried on flavor but I'm sold. Need to try some others.

@sunniegrly sorry if you've answered this one elsewhere (I feel like you have) but what keeps you drinking the coke? Caffeine? If not have you tried different flavors of seltzer? Obviously not the same but the bubbles are there at least.
  • @50wife - It's a combination of the caffeine, the carbonation, and the flavor. I've tried those flavor-infused sparking waters, but there isn't enough flavor for me and it just tastes like sparkling water, which I hate. I like Sprite Zero for the carbonation and the flavor, but I really want to cut back on the aspartame too. I'm learning to like plain water though, so I'm hopeful. And honestly only having 2 Diet Cokes per week is such a huge change/win for me that I think even just staying at that level will be great.

  • @50Wife it's awesome that you've been able to stick to the fix and have your food planned for this week. I'm making it a goal to do some oatmeal tonight. I cooked yesterday for our dinner this week, so no excuses for me

@RVAmom315 congratulations on your progress. keep it up!

@vtgirl899 I started doing yoga about a year ago and have loved it, now that I found the right classes for me. Sugar has been a challenge for me too, especially breakfast. I hope the halo top helps!

@sunniegrly congrats on getting it down from 20+ diet cokes a week to 2. You are so close, Is the goal 0?  glad your bottles are helping with the water intake.

@sunniegrly ah gotcha. I totally agree that it's a huge improvement!!

Oh guys I made this last night as one of my prep meals for the week. Sooooo good!!

  • @sunniegrly That's awesome about the Diet Coke - I was the same way, drinking 3-4 a day, and have probably only had 10 in the last 7 weeks. I like water super cold as well. I also chew spearamint gum and drink the water (I know weird)

@50Wife I heard that, I'm interested to know the premise of Season 2. I enjoyed the series but wasn't in love with it.

@vtgirl899 That's one heck of a spin class outcome - you go!

@Avrilmai I enjoy oatmeal for breakfast but I have to do the low sugar Instant - I just can't do the plain oats

@Avrilmai it took me a while to get into yoga too- I'm a runner and I found hatha classes too slow. I've been doing vinyasa flow classes for a couple years now, and those are much more my speed!

  • 1. What healthy habit are you working on? More activity each day, healthier eating choices.

    2. How is it going? I haven't gotten as many workouts in, but continuing to be active with cleaning around the house and watching my niece also keeps me on my toes. But my SIL his motivating DH and I, and we went in a brisk walk last night and she found a spin studio to go to. DH and I are going tonight! I haven't done a spin class in probably 5 years!

    3. What is a small win from last week? Getting DH to agree to workout with me. We've all been trying to get him to go try yoga. Here still won't budge on that, but he did compromise on trying a spin class!

    4. GTKY: probably getting more done around the house or getting cozy on my porch with a good book.

@avrilmai, which recipe did you end up deciding on?

@50wife, your response made me realize I forgot to include drinking water. It fell off my radar last week after drinking all the fertility things, and now I need to make the switch to water.

@RVAmom315, I'm impressed by your motivation to get to the gym! Get it girl!

@vtgirl899, you're giving me motivation for my class tonight! Does your studio track your progress for you? Though, let's be honest, if I can make it through the class I'll be happy!

@sunniegrly, can you train yourself to like sparkling water by spiking in some fruit juice? Then just decrease the ratio of juice to sparkling water? I've cut out all soda, and now stick to the Kroger Brand sparkling water instead.

  • 1. What healthy habit are you working on? Working out regularly, drinking more water and cutting back on alcohol.

    2. How is it going? Meh. Could be better, but it could be worse. I did not work out as much as I should have last week, but the water and alcohol stuff is going well.

    3. What is a small win from last week? I only had 2 glasses of wine last week even though my students seemed intent on driving me to drink more.

    4. GTKY: If you didn't have to sleep what would you do with the extra time? Probably boring adult things like cleaning, cooking and grading papers.

@Avrilmai That sounds like a win to me! It's all about the small things.

@50Wife Woo hoo! It sounds like you're doing awesome! I'm very impressed that you cooked for this week already. It's the last few weeks of school for me, and my life is a mess.  :D

@RVAmom315 Wow you are killing it on the weight loss! Congrats!

@vtgirl I don't have as much time to read as I'd like either. Reading anything good right now?

@sunniegrly Congrats on your diet coke progress! I like to knit, too. Are you working on anything right now?

@Cricket648 cooking for the week is my Sunday thing. I made three things for this week that we have to choose from for lunch and dinner
  • @Cricket648, omg, that class kicked my butt. I actually got overheated and had to unclip and lay down. I might have puked in my mouth a bit (sorry, TMI), but I got back in the bike and finished the class! DH loved it though!

@purplg8r just make sure you meal prep and you'll be good! Even if you don't meal prep-have your carbs, proteins and veggies ready to go and It makes it much easier.
It might take a few days to get the hang of things.  Not sure which category you're in, but I get two carb containers so it took a bit of trial and error to figure out which carbs and when worked best for me and kept me full.
Also, in the book where it lists what should go in each container, its listed essentially best to worst. So try and stick with the stuff closer to the top of the page for the best results.
it definitely does work if you stick with it! Pinterest has tons of recipe ideas! I have a few go-tos as well if you need any
  • @icecubeinthedesert First, yay! That's so great that DH has agreed to work out with you! That's one of my favorite things that MH and I do together, it's such a productive, fun way to spend quality time together! To answer your question, no my yoga studio doesn't track progress. I use an apple watch to track calories burned / average heart rate per class, but beyond that I just pay attention to how strong I feel.

@cricket648 wow! congrats on holding steady on your wine goals, that's one of my vices too. I feel like I've put on 5lbs in sad, TTTC, wine bloat.  I just finished reading 'A Gentleman in Moscow' and it was wonderful! Couldn't put it down. I just started 'The Buried Giant' and am really enjoying that too.

@purplg8r What's cize? Halo top is a low-sugar, high protein "ice cream" It's pretty tasty and is sweetened with sugar alcohols rather than nasty artificial sweeteners. Each pint only has 280-320 calories, which is waaayyy better than Ben and Jerry's. Although Ben and Jerry's is still way yummier,  lol

  • @50Wife I found 3 weeks of meal prep that literally breaks it all down for me including the steps of how to cook it all on Sunday. I'm hoping I can stick with it.  Although it won't be true 21 day fix I because I despise water.  It literally makes me gag (I've tried infusing fruits and it still tastes like water) so I'll be drinking water with the flavor drops. And if I don't have Gatorade  after runs then I get really bad headaches. So I'll still be having those artificial sweetners.  Also, except for dressings, I hate al the orange container goods so I won't be eating them.  And next weekend, my BIL & SIL are coming down & we're spending the days at Universal.  We don't even bring purses so I won't be packing food.  I'll try to eat healthy but not sure it'll be staying with the containers.

also, do I need resistance bands for the workouts?
  • @vtgirl899 that sounds delicious!  I'm going to have to look for it!  Cize is a Beachbody dance workout problem. It feels like I'm just in dance class, not "working out". I love it!
  • @icecubeinthedesert Hahaha! The important thing is that you got back on! That's awesome!

@purplg8r That's pretty awesome that you had lunch brought in for you everyday! I wouldn't have been able to resist either!

@purplg8r bottom line-random cheats such as Gatorade and drops in your water will not derail your entire 3 weeks. I ate a handful of chocolate covered almonds every night and added milk to my coffee every morning the first time I did it and still lost 7 lbs.
As long as you have weights, you won't need the bands
  • @icecubeinthedesert i went with an apple cinnamon mainly because I had everything I needed in my house. It came from one of those pinterest pins with 50+ recipe options. It wasn't the greatest thing I've ever eaten, but it also wasn't the worst and it definitely has less refined sugar than all of those granola bars I was eating and I'm staying full. So, I'm taking that as a win and I'm going to give it a try again tomorrow.
Also, I am super impressed that you got back on the bike and finished the class!

@Cricket648 GL getting to the end of school and managing to only have 2 glasses of wine! I try to cook for the week on Sunday, or at least prep a cock-pot meal Sunday night and then take it out Monday morning to cook while I'm at work. Since most crock pot meals can feed an army we usually can eat it for the week.

@purplg8r GL with the 21 day fix!

@Avrilmai That 4th mini snickers was a TEST and you passed!  :D
Congrats for sticking with your plan, @50Wife!
@RVAmom315 Wow that is a big deal! I wish I had lost that much since March.
@vtgirl899 I feel you on the sugar. Now that there are so many good fruits in season I'm using them to limit added sugars. It *mostly* works but sometimes I cave. There was one time a couple months ago that I had been really good at it and I couldn't eat an apple because my taste buds changed and it was too sweet. (But that was a high point in the struggle--this month, not so much.)
@sunniegrly Oh man, that's intense but so good you're bringing it down! If I splurge for a soda I get the real sugary Mexican ones (or if I can't find one, the corn syrup--ugh). I can always taste the aspartame in the diet ones and can't stand it.
@icecubeinthedesert Yay for getting YH to spin class!
@Cricket648 only TWO glasses of wine in a whole week??? Hell no. (But also, congrats!)
@purplg8r I feel like you get a pass if people are bringing you free food. I mean, come on, man, that's not even fair.

    1. What healthy habit are you working on?
Trying to exercise more and lose weight.

    2. How is it going? Pretty good!

    3. What is a small win from last week? If you count walking (which I am), I worked out just shy of ELEVEN hours last week! The scale didn't move much, but I'm hoping it will take notice soon. And if not, I will seriously tear that shit up.

    4. GTKY: If you didn't have to sleep what would you do with the extra time? I'd just hang out with MH, probably sitting around and not doing a whole lot. I'm boring I guess.
  • @vflux33 11 hours is a lot of walking!!
  • @Avrilmai - I'm glad the oats worked out ok. Hopefully you can tweak the recipe to make it perfect for you!
@50Wife - Sticking with it is a HUGE win. But go away with your seltzer water! Blech!
@RVAmom315 - You are seriously rocking it lately. Good job, lady!
@vtgirl899 - Sugar is a huge weak point for me.
@sunniegirly - I drink a diet Sunkist at work every single night. Future Pebbledam doesn't drink soda during the week, but I think that will be when I finally find a job that works daylight hours.
@icecubeinthedesert - Husbands are the worst influence sometimes. They have no idea how lucky they are to have fast metabolisms!
    @Cricket648 - Only 2 glasses!?
@purplg8r - Congrats on the weight loss! I know it was really getting to you!
@vflux33 - Any Office Space gif is my favorite. I'm threatening my scale with a baseball bat, too.

    1. What healthy habit are you working on? Working out more, snacking less

    2. How is it going? Not great on the working out this week, but I have definitely noticed an improvement on the snacking.

    3. What is a small win from last week? I don't think I ate any snacks on Friday and it was the end of the day before I realized it. The scale says I lost 2.5 pounds.

    4. GTKY: If you didn't have to sleep what would you do with the extra time? I would organize EVERYTHING. And deep clean. And workout. And meal prep.

@pebbledam snacking is bad news for me. That's my downfall and I try not to even buy snacks to have in the house bc I will eat it all!  And I've been loving seltzer lately. I am not a big water drinker. I get up to max 60% of my goal daily but I do love adding seltzer into the mix. I've even got my 2yo hooked  :D

@vflux33 that's a lot of walking!! Assuming you hve a Fitbit or something like it? What's your daily goal?

    3. What is a small win from last week? I learned some new healthy recipes

    @pebbledam 2.5 pounds is great!

    Welcome @BoshnJonnie!

@purplg8r @50Wife Maybe half was walking/hiking--I just want to count it in the total even though it's not as "intense". The rest was elliptical, stairs, indoor bike, and rower plus slowly dipping my toe back into weight training, which is a struggle for me (as I mentioned before I'm super short and some of the weight machines are not safe for me). I don't have a fit bit, but I do have a weekly "note" on my phone where I add up all the hours I worked out from the previous week each Saturday. I'm trying to hit an hour + every day except Tuesdays. It's easier to add if I use 15 minute increments so if I make it 5 minutes on anything I always try to push for that extra 10 so I don't have to discount the 5 (a weird little self-motivator that I totally recommend -- I know I work out more because of it).

  • @BoshnJonnie welcome! I use myfitnesspal too, but not as consistently as I have in the past. I always find it funny when the alerts say "these alerts don't seem to be working, so we'll stop" it's like the app is shaming me into logging my food.

@vflux33 11 hours is super impressive. I love your 15 minute rule. Seems like a great way to motivate yourself!

@pebbledam 2.5lbs is great! I'm with you on the snacking. I got home a little early yesterday and started looking for a snack. I had to stop myself and then realized I wasn't even hungry. I just wanted to eat.
