LO Only awake for an hour

How long your babies awake for at a time? My 14 week old is only awake for an hour at a time. She gets cranky an hour on the DOT from being awake. Relatives are always amazed when they come to visit that they have an 40 minute window to visit with her. She wakes, feeds and then will play. It is almost embarrassing. I will tell them a good time to come over warn them that she will only be up shortly before getting cranky and wanting to go to sleep. My mother thinks I am putting her down to nap too much and I should let her be fussy because it's 'good for her'. I disagree with this but it makes me doubt myself.

She sleeps so well at night. She goes to bed around 8:30 will occasionally get fussy around 2, go back to sleep and wake for a early morning snack at 5:30 or 6 and wake for the day around 7 or 7:30.

Anyone else having something similar going on?

Re: LO Only awake for an hour

  • Lurking from Oct BMB, this is completely normal.  My LO only had an hour wake time for quite some time and would only take 30 mins naps...on.the.dot.  So it was like I was constantly putting her down for a nap.  She didn't really start increasing her wake times until about 5 months and that's when she also starting increasing her nap times.  Some babies just can't get past that first sleep cycle on their own when napping so they require more naps during the day.

It is normal for babies this age to take short naps because nap consolidation doesn't set in for most babies until closer to 6 months old. That wake time does seem a bit short for the age, more commonly between 3-6 months you will have 3 naps per day with about 2 hours in between.  She is on the younger side so I would think more like 1.5-1.75 hours but every baby is different. Mine is 21 weeks and is up a little longer than 2 hours for most wakes and 2.5 before bed, 3 naps a day.
