My DD usually enjoys walking and will be 2.5 yrs old when DS arrives. I'm not sure if an expensive toddler ride-along stroller is worth it. I'm considering trying without and seeing how things go.
It will depend on your child's abilities and personality, but for long days (like many hours at the zoo or fair), my four year old still wants to ride sometimes. For short distances, he doesn't want to be confined. My almost 3 yo is a runner, so I buckle him in to the stroller every day. Like, going in to the gym, I buckle in my 14 month old and almost 3 year old. Otherwise it takes a few extra minutes of chasing.
My younger DS was 2.5 last summer and was definitely still using the stroller. Now at almost 3.5 I can't imagine putting him in the stroller. He's tall for his age and very much a strong-willed independent second child. When we go to the park I will often bring a wagon. He is riding a bike with training wheels but he's not too fast so that's an option as well. If we were going to an amusement park or zoo I would rent something or bring a wagon because long walks can be made much longer by grouchy slow toddlers. If you think by 3 your child won't want to stroller - you could look into options where you get a board that attaches and then she could "ride" along if she gets tired. That's what DS1 did - he would hook on the back for a bit of a ride when he was tired.
I still use one for my 3.5 year old for long distances or when I would prefer she be more contained. If you plan on zoos, amusement parks, or malls I would make sure there's at least an option for your LO to ride in some way.
We we went to Disney in January and it was a must to have a stroller even though my DH scoffed at the idea. I wouldn't have survived.
We used it regularly until age 4ish and now at age 6 still use it when we're "big" places like a theme park, the airport, the mall, etc. My son RUNS and never looks back.

When ds2 was born I played it by ear and waited it out a while before getting a double. I did a lot of baby wearing and put ds1 in the stroller. Then when it finally got warm and time for fairs and vacations and day trips I splurged on a city mini double. It still fits my almost 6 year old in it. It is a lifesaver especially for those long days like everyone else mentioned!
I'm hoping to limp by with just a combo of Babywearing and a single stroller since DS will be almost 3 when the baby gets here and he pretty much has always hated the stroller. He likes really short spurts in it for snack breaks so I'm hoping I can wear the new one during that time. Fingers crossed it works. I'd rather not invest in a whole new stroller.
I love our stroller and since we go to stroller strides, my son is used to the stroller and doesn't complain about it. I will add the second seat on and have both kids in the stroller.
When DS3 was born, DS1 was 3.5 and DS2 was 19 months. We spent several weeks in California where my husband was working for a while and I didn't have a car. Every single day, I packed my older two into the stroller while wearing my then 4 month old. It was hard up hills, but it became my norm and we just did it. So those of you who are going to attempt a combo of single stroller/babywearing - it just might work!
We bought a citymini double when I had #2 and I love it. Now my boys are 2 and 4 and often we will go for a family walk and start out with no one riding in it but will end with one or both of them in it. It's a nice place to stash the diaper bag if one wants to ride and it's nice to have the option for both to ride if we need to make a speedy exit. We like to walk a lot so for us it was a great investment. I'm sure DS 1 will walk more when baby 3 needs to ride I figure they hold their resale value pretty well so we will get some money back when we are done.
My DD will be almost 3 when this baby is born and I'm not getting any kind of double stroller, or ride along whatever. I don't use the stroller often with her and when I do it's on long walks with DH. She loves to walk and she's pretty obedient so I don't see myself using a stroller like that.

I honestly got so used to carrying my son around while we traveled (we traveled out of country a Lot his first year and it was too difficult to drag around the stroller) that I just barely ever use it now. I used it for longer walks last summer when he was 18 months but honestly it's just been in the closet for like 6 months. He is not a runner though, he likes to stick close to me so I don't have to worry about things like that. If he was I would definitely get a double, but I think I will just stick with my single when this next baby comes.
My daughter was 3 when she pretty much stopped riding in a stroller and walked all the time. My son will be newly 2 when the twins arrive, and he is a runner so we are looking into triple strollers because I just can't trust him not to take off on me. At 2.5, if your child listens well and doesn't tire quickly you could probably skip it but if money isn't a concern, buy the double because kids tend to revert a little back to their needy days when a new baby arrives and you may find your 2.5 year old WANTS to ride in the stroller too.
I'm wondering what I want to do also. My son will be 4 when the baby is born and he really only uses a stroller now when we go to Disney which is only once or twice a year. They have double strollers you can rent but they wouldn't work for an infant. I don't want to splurge on a double stroller for only once or twice a year though.

If it's infrequent, you could easily bring your usual stroller and buy a cheap umbrella stroller! They actually fit in the bottom of our normal stroller. Last year for the fair our kids were all 3 and under and I knew I wouldn't want to wear anyone in 90 degree weather for long, so we brought the double and an umbrella.
@amber0529 Check out off site rental companys. I almost used one in Hawaii and they had a better selection/options. I can only imagine with Disney being a family destination that there would be companys like this around there.
My 3yo can't cope with crowds AT ALL. The sensory overload basically means we need him to be able to ride/be confined or else we have to carry him mid meltdown. I don't see that changing soon haha
My oldest was 3 when I had my second baby in January. I never bought a double, being winter and couldn't decide. My oldest was a good walker and I ended up wearing the baby a lot under 6 months. My plan was to purchase a sit n stand stroller so my oldest had options on longer day trips but I never did.
Now that im pregnant again my second will be almost 2 and oldest 5 so I'm definitely thinking of getting a double. I just have no idea which one or kind to get. Gotta start researching.
At Disney yesterday I saw sooo many women wearing their infants. The babies that were awake just had a miserable look on their faces on the asleep ones were soaked in sweat and it was only 79 which is super cool for us this time of year. So I will definitely need some kind of double stroller at Disney.
@amber0529 yeah Florida can make babywearing rough, and yesterday was even unseasonably cool. We use frog tog cooling towels for summer wearing. I'm definitely looking in to getting mesh Tula as well. But it's still nice to have the stroller to give you and baby some space.
I have a lillebaby airflow (mesh) and also use cooling towels. It makes it do-able, but it still gets miserable in the hot sun if you're doing it for too long. I mean, its skin against skin - it's bound to get sweaty
I agree with @MississippiCatfish. I have a kinderpack with koolnit. It's better than a full panel but it can still be hot. I also use the cooling towels with it and it's ok but you and baby will still get warm.
