Hi yall, I've been perusing the board for a while but just became a member.
My background: I'm 32, DH is 33. I went off BC in Nov 15. Ever since, irregular cycles. In Nov 16, I visited my regular OBGYN. Between Nov 16 and now, I've done 4 rounds of Clomid - 1 at 50mg, 3 at 100mg. The last cycle we monitored with labs. My FSH and AMH were normal, but my progesterone was only 1.1. We did the progesterone on day 25 but that was just a shot in the dark because my cycles have been varying from 70 to 38 days. The OB said that those labs reflected I didn't ovulate. I also have done OPKs and have never once saw a positive. All other basic lab work is normal, I am overweight and I know I need to reign that in.
The last f/u with my OB she recommended I see an RE. She gave me scripts for an HSG and a semen analysis for DH and I decided to do those before we got into the RE so the visit may be more informative. The HSG was normal. Much to our surprise, the semen analysis was not. The sperm count was good - 113 mil, but there was zero progressively motile sperm. All this type we had kind of written off any MFI because we knew it was evident I wasn't ovulating, and now it turns out to be a double whammy.
I'm a nurse so I know better, but until my RE appt next Tuesday 5/9, I have been consulting with Dr. Google as well as reading forums such as these. The semen analysis has us devastated because it seems from what I'm reading that the most likely recommendation will be IVF. I have seen where the men can taken vitamins, etc and improved the motility, but DH's was ZERO. Also, 95% had abnormal morphology, which was technically in the normal parameter but it doesn't seem good! Anyway, IVF is not a financial option for us. My insurance doesn't cover it, and we do not have any extra income to put towards IVF or even to take on a payment plan for it.
My questions are...
- If anyone has experience with similar SA results, please share what happened for you!
- Is there anything in particular I should ask my RE? I am writing down questions as I think of them, but I don't know what to expect.
TIA and glad to join this encouraging and informative community

Re: New member - Questions about zero motility, first RE appt
I don't have the same experience but do know from hanging around here that a urologist may be a good next step (in addition to the RE) as they can sometimes provide insight or recommendations specifically for MFI. I hope you get some good info and are able to move forward after these visits. Good luck!!

So sorry about your dx for you and your hubby. We're dealing with 0% morphology, everything else seems fine. I was told IVF was the way to go but like you we can't afford that so we're doing our first IUI tomorrow morning. We'll see how that goes, I will definitely update.
All hope is not lost for either of us, there are so many amazing stories out there of people being able to get pregnant who are "worse off". There are so many supplements that may help and I've read that people swear by acupuncture. Worth a shot right? I think so. I have my DH taking about 20 pills a day. lol He's a good sport.
Good luck to you!

Our MFI dx was different but we went straight from TI + all the vitamins and progesterone after O... To IVF + ICSI as our only option, or adoption, just like that. It's tough to hear. I don't know if an RE would attempt iui since it may be covered in your case? But I rather doubt that would be their first recommendation. Again, our situation is different, so idk. Hopefully your RE will give you some next steps that you can work with.
Iui + donor sperm may be another treatment alternative to ivf if you are hard set ivf is a no go, but they would need to see you ovulating, too.
You're still facing a lot of unknowns right now. Please do try to stay off google and wait and see what the RE recommends. ❤ when is your appointment? I would ask her/him to provide you with various treatment options and some idea of your chances with each... GL
I would definitely make sure to get all possible treatment plans. Take time and really think about what is the right option for you. I'm not sure how open you are with loved ones about your fertility issues, however, if you have a trusted person to talk with as well that really helps. My BIL and his wife have been a support system for us through our struggles. When they had a positive reaction to our decision, it reassured us that it was the right way to go. Good luck at your appointment!
