Re: Medications / Vitamins

  • Oh my God this is perfect. I had that 24 hour bug the other day but now I have a hacking chest/deep cough. My MIL is a L&D nurse and she said robitussin but make sure it's not the DM kind.

Thanks for posting @NYTino24. This is a good list. The one thing I'd recommend for Vitamin D is reading your labels if you take multiple supplements, as Vitamin D is added to a lot of things. Vitamin D is in my prenatal, my DHA supplement, and my calcium supplement. I still take a separate Vitamin D supplement, but I'm taking a lower dose of that to stay at 4,000 IU.
  • @slaven I posted it for you! Hope you feel better soon!

  • @NYTino24 Thanks! I feel like a whiney baby. But whats hard is that my Korean OB doesn't necessarily know about American OTCs and I'm hesitant to take Korean medicine. I haven't really seen OTCs here, it's like for even little colds Koreans go to the dr. and they get a RX. Even if it's just some kind of herbal thing. We have a pharmacy on base but it's closed on weekends so I can't call them and ask what to take. Thankfully DH has to go to work in a bit so I'll be driving him in and getting robitussin and vicks.

  • Thanks for the link on the vitamin D. I was supplimenting daily and actually cut back when I found out I was pregnant and started a prenatal- since the prenatal had 400IUs. Going to grab my pill trays and add my vit D supplimental back in.
  • @NYTino24 Thanks! Thinking I need to add a vitamin D supplement to my prenatal, another question for the ob at my first visit!

  •  I had been taking 5,000 iui of Vitamin D daily, and then the nurse said I should only have 1,000 max. I asked her why and she said she didn't know (??) and then said there weren't enough studies. But studies do say at least 4,000 iui a day, I suppose!

@ChattyKitty17 No problem! My doc circled them for me when I had a bad sinus infection last pregnancy. Make sure you get the regular ones - nothing like Mucinex FastMax or anything like that because it has phenylepherine. Hope you feel better.

@DuchessOfCambridge That sheet lists it as something to avoid twice. Here is more info:

  • @NYTino24 I see Metamucil is listed twice. Perhaps because it's a life changing miracle supplement, especially for my IBS!
  • @bklynchica If you say it's a miracle, then I may need to try it. Getting desperate fast!

  • @NYTino24 Truly amazing. I take the capsules because I read the powder mixed with water is gross. The instructions say you can take up to 20 a day. That's a little crazy. I take 3 a day every morning. Just have to be careful to leave two hours between Metamucil and any other medication as it can affect the absorption, so I do folic acid at night.
  • This is what I got from my OB office.  @NYTino24 I'm surprised they have Pepto-Bismol on your list.

  • @mispanda I've seen some things about it not being safe, too. I always triple check if I want to take something - online, OB, and pharmacist.

  • @DuchessOfCambridge when I was really sick my doctor had me take Claritin in the morning and Benadryl at night. I didn't take the Claritin, but I did take the Benadryl when needed and it made the world of difference!
  • Thanks @cmessamore! I still really don't want to take medicine but I did already bite that bullet with Tylenol when my cramps were awful earlier this week. I might give it one more day and then just do it so I can stop being sad.

  • My list from my dr. Specifically says not to take pepto, weird how all the info is so different...never heard of needing vitamin D supplement.  My prenatal has some in it
  • My doctor (a family doctor) specifically said not to take Claritin or Zyrtec while pregnant. He only recommended Benadryl for my allergy relief. It's so interesting how different doctors suggest different things.
  • @missrekaeagle it definitely is weird! My dr said no to sudafed in the first tri, but someone else said their doctor said it was fine. My doctor also said no Zyrtec, but okayed Claritin. I think I'll stick with the basics of Tylenol or Benadryl (when absolutely necessary) and avoid the rest. I personally don't think there is good data about medications in pregnancy and doctors have to use their best judgment. I'm terrified of things like the thalidomide issue!!
  • @baker1jm2 my dr said no pepto as well. All she really said for my cold/cough was robitussin is ok

  • Just thought I would pop in and mention, I got a new humidifier the other day as my other one had died and I forgot how much of a lifesaver it was for me the first time around. I put the Vicks steam stuff in it and slept on 2 pillows to keep my head elevated and I slept decently for the first time in a month! I'm really missing my allergy meds as my doctor told me to stay clear until second trimester. Just thought I would share what was helping me.
  • It's definitely super weird how some okay certain things and some don't. Mine says no pepto but sudafed, Benadryl, Zyrtec and Claritin are ok. Also my last pregnancy they only okayed my Prilosec in the second tri and this time my doctor said I could take it if I need it, even though I stopped taking it because my RE said I couldn't be on it in the TWW. So confused!!!
  • Is anyone taking a probiotic supplement? I've read great things about it, but I haven't asked my doctor yet. Has anyone talked to their doctor about this?
  • @knewton785 I'm actually supposed be taking a probiotic twice a day. I was on antibiotics for SIBO at the beginning of the pregnancy and the GI doc said I can take any of the over-the counter ones.

  • Good to know! Thanks @NYTino24
  • @knewton785 I take a probiotic but I didn't even mention it to my dr. Bonus is that is has 2000 IUs of vit. D. My prenatal only has 400 and even with both the probiotic and prenatal I came up vit. D deficient in my 8 week blood test so now I have an extra 2000 IUs supplement. I was probably deficient pre-pregnancy.

@knewton785 My prenatal has some probiotics, plus I tend to eat a lot of live/fermented foods. My doctor liked my prenatal, so I guess the probiotic is fine too...

Bumping this thread, anyone know if Tylenol PM is ok. Most of my googling says yes, but I'm not sure. Don't really want to bug the on call midwife unless I have to.
  • Tylenol PM is Tylenol with Benadryl. Both are ok in pregnancy!
