I made a cake for DS2's birthday and it turned out amazingly.  I cheated on his actual birthday and had a small slice, but we only ate 1/2 the cake and I've been staring at it for the past 2 days.  All I want is cake.
I dunno if it's true because I haven't tried it out yet. But at my class the lady said we could still do a small sweet if we just had protein before it?

Her example was a brownie. If you want to eat brownies with your friends, just eat something like beef jerky five minutes before, and it should be okay?

Pairing it with protein will help slow down the way the sugar is digested and maybe prevent your BS from spiking so much. But I think it's more like, if you must cheat, here's the least terrible option. Not like eat all the sweets you want as long as you have some protein first.

Well, clearly. She said she wanted a small piece of cake, not the whole thing. That's why I said that.

Thanks guys; I also checked in with my OB today and he gave me more lancets and test strips so I could branch out on food a bit (and occasionally cheat) and be able to see what it does to my numbers.

  • Took my test this morning. Had to be poked twice because my veins have become stupidly small since becoming pregnant...results may be back either tonight or tomorrow.
  • I just got a call from my doctor that I failed the 1-hr with 156. Plus they say I'm anemic! Grrrr

Any tips on passing the 3-hr next week? Stuff to eat/not eat in the next few days?

  • @plumpous check my post above about the carb recommendations from my clinic. I had a 149 and passed the 3-hour easily - don't know if the diet modifications helped but I just did what they told me.

The 3-hr test is very accurate. As long as you fast the day of, you're going to fail if you have GD and you're going to pass if you don't. There's really not much you can do to help yourself pass.
  • @AdaByron is definitely right, don't mean to suggest at all that the 3-hour can be somehow fooled or the results altered by what you eat! What was explained to me is that since I normally eat a low-carb diet, my circulating insulin levels are relatively low, so eating more carbs before the test made sure my insulin levels were "normal" (for me) instead of suppressed by diet. The issue with GD is that cells don't respond to insulin as well, so if you actually have it, your circulating insulin levels are already normal or high and eating more carbs before the test won't change anything at all.
  • I guess I'm confused... don't our diets have something to do with the results? Because you definitely have to change your diet to treat it if you GD, right?

Your diet definitely affects your blood sugar levels a lot throughout the day, which is why those with GD are told to eat foods that don't make blood sugar rise as much, so the baby isn't exposed to extended high blood sugar levels. The 3-hour GTT is an intentional blood sugar spike after fasting to check (1) what is your blood sugar like without recent food in your system - the first draw and (2) how well your pancreas puts out insulin and how your cells use the insulin to take the sugar out of your blood and store it away - the next 3 draws.  The reason my clinic asked us to get enough carbs the couple of days before is to make sure the blood insulin levels weren't artificially low and thus slow to respond to the unexpected sugar drink. They weren't saying to go out and binge on cookies and whatnot, just get a solid number of servings of whole grains, fruits, and dairy. Hope that makes sense!

As someone with GD, I can say from experience that what I eat only affects my blood sugar for a few hours afterward. The goal of the test is to find out whether the drink causes your sugar to spike over 130-140 or not. It's all about the drink, not the rest of your diet. I know without a doubt that amount of sugar would cause a spike for me regardless of what my diet was like in the hours or days before. And it would probably still be high after 3 hours. Especially after fasting beforehand.

For someone without GD, you should be able to drink the drink and your body will "handle it" and after an hour your blood sugar would be back to normal. If you were feasting on ice cream and candy all day maybe it will still be high, and that's why there are a lot of false positives on the 1 hour test, but the 3 hour test controls for your diet in the preceding hours and allows the doctor to see basically how long it takes to come back down. It's pretty hard to get an inaccurate result.

Thank you for explaining that. I never really understood why some doctors told people to do the carb thing before the test. My doctor probably looked at my weight gain and knew without a doubt I wasn't restricting carbs so he didn't bother to recommend. LOL
  • @plumpous My 1-hour results were a 172, and I passed the three hour.  I intentionally ate how I normally eat the day before because I really thought there was a good chance I had GD and wanted accurate results so I could be appropriately monitored if it was an issue (and if the test could be influenced by behavior).  If it were me, I would just go in and take the test...you're not that far off!
  • So I just got my glucose meter yesterday and I must say I've noticed certain fingers hurt a lot more than others. I'm gonna try to avoid having to prick my thumb from now on!

Also my fasting number was too high when I woke up (105) but all my after meal numbers have been nice and low (below 125). I guess I'll have to play around with my bedtime snack for a few days to see how I can lower that morning number. I'm really hoping I can control this without needing meds or insulin...
  • I went in to pregnancy with an A1c of 6, which indicates borderline.  So I got nervous and met with a nutritionist to be safe.  She had me monitoring first thing in the am and then 1 hr after every meal.  She wanted me to be under 140 1 hr after eating.  I was able to do that but when I had my 1 hr glucose test today, they said it would need to be under 120. Does anyone know what the cutoff is?

Just saw this and I was told that first thing in the am could be due to slight dehydration. Also be sure to wash your hands before testing since that could factor in as well.
  • @soontobemrsrlb Most offices use 140 as the cutoff for the 1hr test. My doc uses 130, she said because of a study that came out a few years ago that said they were missing people on the border line.

My doctor uses 130 for the 1 hour test, and also as my limit 1 hour after each meal.
  • Thanks @soontobemrsrlb. I wasn't aware about dehydration. Maybe I'll try having a glass of water first. I've been altering my bedtime snack (apple, protein and veggies, light carbs + protein) and my fasting numbers have still been above 100. I've been thinking about skipping it tonight just to see what happens tomorrow morning.
  • My doctor used 135

I just found out I failed my 1hr glucose test with a blood sugar of 145 (the cutoff was 135).  Now I have to do the 3 hour test.  Anyone fail the 1 hr but pass the 3 hr?
  • @rawood82 well I wasn't one of them, but there are tons of women who pass the 3 hour test after failing the one hour so I wouldn't stress about it at all.

It's tricky to predict by your numbers. I failed the one hour with a 151 and then failed the 3 hour but know women who have had numbers in the 170s that went on to pass the 3 hour.

I wish you the best of luck in passing the next round!
  • I failed the 1 hr but passed the 3 hr with DS. My number was 142 and my Drs cut off is 139. If you asked your doctor I'm sure they would have told you it happens ALL THE TIME.
  • Found out to day I failed the 1 hour test with 225, is there even the slightlest chance I don't have gestational diabetes? Has anyone failed the 1 hour by so much and passed the 3 hour test?

  • @fiorip Do you have A1C results to compare it with?
  • @BusyZee last time I had it checked was back in November and it came back at 5.4

  • @fiorip Ask your doctor if it will help you in any way to get it done again. I got mine done again to see how my levels have been doing (basically done twice till now). It may help you understand better where you stand. (It does help me in my situation).
  • Just had my 3 hour today.
Brutal. I came back from a delayed flight last night around midnight and had to fast. They only started the test this morning at 9 am even though I was there at 8. But they did give me 2 cups of water first as I was dry as a bone from my trip. But by the time 3rd and 4th pricks rolled by I was dehydrated once more, and they could barely get any blood out of me.
So, tip for all of you - if you don't already know, you CAN drink plain water, and you SHOULD! But not after the sugary drink, only before.
Sweet DH prepared me a sandwich right before I got back, it was sitting there waiting for me.

    Crossing my fingers!

For those who ask about failing the 1-hr and passing the 3-hr: With my first, I failed 1 and passed 3. According to an article I read, about 20% fail the first, but only 2-5% have GD, so the odds are in our favor, statistically speaking.

    Good luck to everyone.

  • I was surprised at my OBs response to my message asking about my 3 hour results- I guess you technically pass if one of your results is out of range. So my fasting was fine, my one hour was high and the rest were in range. So I don't have GD but I'm going to try to follow the diet because from a few studies I have read, 1 failing result on the 3hr GTT is linked to larger fetal size, c-section and other serious issues. I'd rather be safe than sorry. So if you don't mind, I'm going to stick around these parts to get some tips/tricks, because I don't qualify for the class :(

I'm not sure what the diet is in detail, but I assume it can only be good for you regardless of GD, so why not.

I ended up passing the 3hr. Funny though, my last test after 3 hours was out of range in the opposite direction. It was way way low. I don't have GD but something's definitely not right with my sugar fluctuations. How could it have fallen from 124 to 57 in the last hour? Yikes! Of course I had the shakes when I got home.

  • I passed the 3 hour, thank god! Its been such a horrible process.

I had to take it at 18 weeks because I was on Metformin to get pregnant. I failed with 160 (normal was under 140 for my doctor) and had to take the 3 hour. I rescheduled the 3 hour  3 times because I kept throwing it up and my work schedule was pretty crazy. I finally passed at 21 weeks (took that long to get in and keep it down).

I took the 3 hour again 2 weeks ago since I was 28 weeks and again threw it up and rescheduled. Finally a week ago I kept it down and the doctor said I passed with flying colors.

I keep dreaming about food I can't eat.  Last week someone offered me a beautiful scone in my dream with clotted cream and jam and I turned it down.  A few nights ago, my dreams had a delightful soft-serve ice cream bar and I spent the entire dream putting toppings on my ice cream -- I woke up before I could eat it.

Last night in my dreams I bought a single serve bottle of grape juice.  And I drank the whole thing.  Dream catharsis; it was delightful.

  • We went to a fundraiser at DS's daycare and won this by guessing how many kisses were in it. Of course this would be the thing we won. Nevermind all those effing raffle tickets we bought. WTF am I going to do with 378 Hershey kisses?
  • My GD specialist still isn't happy that my fasting numbers are around 94/95 so she's made the decision to put me on medication today. I'm okay with having to take medication...it's more the added hassle of having to go to the MFM twice a week for NSTs (on top of my existing appointments for fibroid growth monitoring and regular OB visits). I know this all sounds pretty whiny, but I guess I'm just nervous about having to tell my boss I'll be MIA even more than I already am.

On an even pettier note, I never realized how much I took OJ and lemonade for granted. Oh how I miss my citrusy delights.
  • I'm not sure if this has been talked about here before but before I was medicated, my regular OB suggested I try cinnamon pills before bed. I did and they really helped lower my numbers. Just wanted to share in case this helps anyone else out!
  • So after lunch, my sugar was 133. Just a tiny bit high. A few minutes after that, I got up to go to the bathroom and felt a little woozy so I checked it again and it was 95. I have no idea if maybe it was because I didn't clean my finger well enough the first time (the second time I had just washed my hands after using the bathroom) or if my blood sugar actually crashed that much in a 20 minute span.
