Re: Ask a Mom - May

  • My lo had been a disaster. 6 weeks hit and she cries when she is awake and seems generally unhappy.. I am hoping it's a growth spurt but who knows. How do people survive this?

  • @kjd291 defn taking your advice ! She fights the wearing and I have been nursing quite often sometimes 3 times in an hour. I am just hoping it's not something I'm doing wrong

Not you! Spot on for a fussy week is all. Totally normal.

i also found it was always easier to just get out od
the house during fussy times. I was terrified to leave and be around ppl with a screaming baby/but car rides, walks, or stores always provided good naps and distractions for us both.

    goodluck! :)
  • @MsTurney definitely get out of the house! The extra stimulation can distract baby and encourage an extra nap sometimes. Wear your baby while walking around target and you'll be amazed how much it relaxes you both.

I read somewhere (happiest baby in the block?) that 5-6 weeks is the fussiest time with the most crying and it starts to decrease after that so just push through mamas!

I read that too...6 weeks is the "peak of crying" of something like that.

ETA: Peak of fussiness...that's what I read not peak of crying. Haha!
  • I hope that peak is why DD has been screaming her head off when I've left her with DH to shower these past two days! I keep coming downstairs after I shower to find her in her diaper instead of her sleeper and crying till she's red in the face. I've encouraged DH to try skin to skin but he says he never thinks of it and his face seems like he gives up so easily because she quiets instantly with me.
  • What do you do when your baby hates tummy time? My little boy is coming up on 8 weeks old, and he still screams bloody murder whenever he's put belly down. He can roll onto his side and hold his head up on his own pretty well (I usually carry him upright against my chest to help him learn this skill), so I'm not terribly worried about him yet. But I know he still needs it to strengthen his back and core muscles. Its improtant for later on.

Is there any way that I can make it enjoyable for him at this age? He's not into toys yet, except for the rattle that straps onto his wrist. Or do I just need to be patient and wait until he's older for him to be ok with it?
  • @ShannonJ96 we struggled with tummy time a bit too. LO started rolling from his belly to his back at 2 weeks, so I couldn't even really make him stay on his belly. He'd just flip over to his back and look at me like "whatta ya gonna do about it, lady?" It's improved some now and I've learned a few tricks. 1: I try to do tummy time when he is in a good mood, and when I have the time to really play, sing, and talk to him to keep him happy. 2: we got him this play mat that is about the size of a place mat to play with and he loves it. You fill it with water (I added vinegar so I didn't have to fill and empty it every time, I change the water about every week or 2) and it has colorful ocean animals in it. It was like $6 on Amazon, and they had other ones too that were in the $10-15 range. This is the one we got, but there are a few others if you look around online.

  • Thanks mommas for the suggestion! I will try and get out. My MIL  struck fear in me suggesting it was colic. I would not wish that on my worst enemies
  • Do you have to adjust the 6w peak of fussiness for birth date vs due date?  DD is 6w 3d but her adjusted age is 5w today.   I am nearly certain she had her first developmental leap last week,  had a couple nice days and now is crotchety again.

Yeah, the mental leaps theory usually does adjusted age. But you'll see a pattern--you can tell pretty quick if baby hits them early, late, or right on time-and they'll usually do it the same with all the age stuff.
  • We are going through a very hungry/fussy/more crying time over here too. He's 4.5 weeks but according to due date he's 5 weeks today.

He also is having a lot of trouble calming down his limbs. When he gets overtired he just can't seem to stop moving them. Then upsets himself more.  Sometimes he likes the paci,  sometimes he won't take it. I swaddle him, but then sometimes he will try for up to 45 minutes to get his arms out of the swaddle.  He's super strong so I have to use the Velcro ones in order to keep him in, he can escape the muslin swaddle's like Houdini.  When do they start getting more control of their limbs?
  • kjd291kjd291 member
@jenny0228 google 1minute mom: super swaddle - if you're really wanting to keep him wrapped.
  • @kjd291 thanks! that was amazing!! do you guys swaddle for every nap? when DS sleeps in his mammaroo sometimes he is ok unswaddled but to sleep in his bassinet he can't keep his arms from flailing around long enough to fall asleep.

@jenny0228 I've never even tried, to be honest.
ha. She's pretty much in the moby wrap all day as I wrangle her big sister.
  • I swaddle for naps as well. Otherwise, mine is like yours and will keep himself awake flailing his arms around. Once swaddled, he goes right to sleep though.

This is not really a conventional answer: I don't doit. If she cries or fussed I pick her up. I wear our Cath throughout the day so her head control is progressing fine.

  • DS is 7 weeks and goes to bed between 8-10 pm depending on how his evening naps go. Yesterday he was so fussy he had a morning  nap and never really went back to sleep he cat napped. So he went to bed right at 8.

Tummy time: don't do it here either. Babywearing for head control.  Never did it much with my first and she turned out just fine ;)

If you want to try some other things.... tummy time facing out on the couch edge so they can see more, laying back with them on your chest and interacting with them.

    Whenever I go to bed.

Yeah I don't do tummy time this young either. I hold her upright a lot and let her work neck muscles semi supported.

Eventually they enjoy tummy time when they are able to grasp at toys etc. 3-4 months give or take.

9ish??? Some nights a little later if she's resisting, over tired etc.

It's been warming up here in CA (90s during the day) and our house has no ac. I'm trying to keep the house cool by keeping the blinds closed all day and keeping fans on, but at night it can be 80 in our room where the baby sleeps!

Any advice to keep him cool? I'm having him sleep in just a diaper in the lightest swaddle we have (the swaddle up). If I try to put him down not in a swaddle, his arms would wake him up. But I don't want to cause him to overheat. Besides adding ac (which I am considering), what can we do to keep him cool at night?

@jomarma another SoCal mom here! Have you tried using a fan by your bedroom window to get the cool night air in? I don't turn on our upstairs ac so it's like 78-80 up there in the evening, but once I open our slider and turn the fan on it gets downright cold!

  • How are you differentiating "going to bed" vs napping? Sometimes DS naps in his mamaroo out in the living room, sometimes in his bassinet by the bed. He sleeps in the bassinet. I keep the windows open so it's light in the room during naps and obviously during sleep time it's darker, but are you doing anything different to cue nighttime sleep?

    DS is almost 5 weeks.

Nothing here yet. I don't plan on starting a bedtime routine till closer to 3mo.
  • Anyone have any tried and true tips for dealing with the witching hour?  DD is an absolute crab from ~5-9pm unless she is on the boob.  We got a swing and that helps a bit, but not long enough for me to cook dinner and actually eat with DH.  Usually DH cooks and we still don't get to eat together.  Many of my friends have said this shouldn't last more than a few more weeks, but if it is really a nightly cluster feed I think we are in for this for a while.  She is probably only about 8lbs now at 6.5 weeks.

  • DS is a spitter/puker of his formula he was the same when he was breast fed. The pediatrician is not concerned because he eats with out being in distress and he's happy he isn't grunting after his meals, therefore they don't believe it's related to his formula he's on similac pro advance non gmo. The spitting/puking drives me crazy especially at night because when he's in his back it will comeback up and a couple of times he hasn't been able to clear it on his own it comes up his nose he struggles and I've had to suction him so I do t sleep well. He sleeps in his bassinet which I tried to incline but he moves so much that it leaves him in a funny angle, I've tried propping him up with the hoppy but he'll wiggle out of that.  I do have a rock and play that he uses on and off during the day which is why I'm hesitant to use it overnight plus my bed is so tall that o wouldn't be able to see him well. Wondering if anyone else is experiencing or has experienced this, is there anything else I can should do and or how long will this last.  He has a pedi appt in two weeks so will address this again with her.

Baby's poop has been green for the last couple of days (today is the third day although his first dirty diaper was more is, they were back to green after). He's eating normally and he still has plenty of wet diapers. He has been extremely gassy (colicky?) In the evenings the past 4 ish days. He's inconsolable until I give him gripe water. He will be 7 weeks Monday and breastfed. I've read mixed information on whether this is normal or not.  Any experience with This?

If it matters, have not changed anything in my diet before this but after the past few days, I am dropping dairy to see if it helps. I do have eggs every morning but have since he's been born.

We've talked about it a little bit here-but sometimes green diapers can be oversupply. Is this something you're also struggling with?  I'd highly reccomend setting up a meeting with a lactation consultant where you delivered (or elsewhere if you prefer) in my own experience pediatricians didn't really care about this problem.  I cut out all the allergen stuff and drove myself crazy for a couple months trying to figure it out-but it was just my oversupply all along.
  • @VeeMore Is it green and mucousy or just green?  In my experience green with mucous could be allergy but just green or green and frothy could be oversupply like @kjd291 said.  With both of my kids I did have to give up dairy, eggs, and soy.  I am also gluten free for myself.  But I have oversupply too.  I agree that meeting with a lactation consultant is a good idea.

@kjd291 Thanks! I did read that was one of the possible reasons. I do have engorgement but only in the morning, and his MOTN feeding. Also, his poops were yellow up until the past couple of days.
How would I or the LC determine if it is oversupply?

@VeeMore I'm in the exact same boat. Poops were yellow until about a week ago and have now been green at least every other one. I know I have oversupply so I've been block feeding. I'm meeting with an LC on Sunday and I'll report back with any addice she provides. I also thought it was strange that it started out of nowhere.(DD is six weeks old)

This. Or rather the other way around. She is fussy until about 10 or 11, after that we go to bed. We bedshare so it's not a big deal.

  • My son had the green poop but it didn't start right away...not until he was about 5 weeks and I hadn't changed anything in my diet.  Just took awhile to show up. He also had other symptoms like spitting up/reflux with crying like he was in pain.  With this LO, she didn't really have the green poop. She had other symptoms that led to my pedi to saying I should try eliminating foods.  She is very gassy and spits up ALL the time.  She also had a really bad rash on her face that cleared up soon after I stopped dairy.  It also took a few weeks for her to show symptoms.  So, not saying it is something in your diet but in my experience with both kids the problems didn't show up right away.
