Telling work about pregnancy

I need advice on how to handle my current employment situation. I am a contractor and have only been here a few months. My boss has mentioned in passing they may want me to join full-time, but I sort of need to know. If they aren't going to keep me around long term, I need to find something soon before I look super pregnant. This is a really small company where having someone out on maternity would be a big deal. Would you tell them now in hopes of moving the process along...or wait and hope an offer comes (and not tell them until after the fact)? I don't want to keep them from hiring me by scaring them with the thought of maternity leave!

I would personally wait if you think and offer is going to happen.

Hmm. This is a tough one. I think if it were me, I would wait for the offer (assuming I'm confident that I would get it). They can't fire you for your pregnancy so at least you'd be safe there (I think?) sorry I'm not much help. Maybe keep your eye out for another position in the meantime while you wait just in case.

That's a tough one. I'd say go with your gut. If you're confident they'll hire you soon, don't mention it. Otherwise, start looking. Employers cannot legally fire you for pregnancy, and they also can't refuse to hire you due to your pregnancy but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Thanks. I am going to keep my mouth shut for at least another few weeks and hope they make an offer. Fingers crossed:/

Sounds like you've made your decision @ameliabedelia-2, but chiming in with a +1 on that plan. While it's not supposed to impact their decision, unfortunately it does some times.

I would tell them and let them know you need a decision soon. If they don't hire you on full time but hire someone else, you can take them to court. It is absolutely illegal to discriminate against a pregnant woman. If we, as women, don't start demanding the things that men do we will never get equality in the workplace. Sorry, this is a subject I am really passionate about!!

@ameliabedelia-2 GL either way. I get how stressful it is as I was job hunting when I was pregnant with the twins. I did not tell my current job I was pregnant until I started the position. They know about this pregnancy already because there are some specific and obvious job alterations I need to make right away.
