Middle of Night Hunger

Hi all. This is my first post :)
I'm hungry in the night and have been waking to eat crackers, bread for months now. I bet some of you are too! My question is... how are you handling this with your partner if you have one? Everything I read says to eat before getting out of bed and my tummy really likes this!.. but between turning on a light and crunching, it's starting to drive him bonkers. Tonight he grumpily left and is sleeping on the couch but this doesn't seem a great fix. I'm not sure if there are any possible solutions here, but I'd love to hear your experiences.

  • Personally I hate eating in the bed especially things that leave crumbs like crackers. And I get heartburn so late night snacking + laying down is a no for me.

It sounds like you two have already reached a compromise - you can eat but he is going to sleep on the couch. You can't make it not bother him. Maybe switch to smoothies?

    Good luck!

  • I get out of bed and have a snack in the kitchen. My cat is so used to me feeding him when I'm up so he thinks it's breakfast time at 3a.m. lol but I don't eat in the room at all. Hubby usually stirs a bit and then falls back asleep If he feels me getting out of bed

  • My hubby doesn't mind so no real advice but I'm with you regarding the hunger! I've been getting up at 4am to have a bowl of oatmeal!
  • I have a box of peanut butter crunch cereal on my night stand and have eaten that on occasion in the middle of the night. DH tosses and turns but I don't think he'd ever leave the room on me. I agree maybe a conversation about middle of the night feedings with LO and how you guys plan to handle night duty come October!

  • I keep granola or nutrigrain bars in my nightstand. Grapes or bananas are also great.
  • Thx all. Well I guess there's good news and bad news... the good news is he came back into the room after about 45 minutes, held my hand, and fell asleep. :) Also my energy level is (cross fingers) improving to where I can probably just get up to eat. Also, I Did recall theiving one of "his" pillows just before bed that night to contribute to my pillow fortress so he may just have been grumpy about that (I have since bought another pillow).

The bad news is it appears I'm being somewhat overaccomodating. :( ... I have no idea how he'll handle screaming infant. I know My father straight refused to be any help in the middle of the night... and my mother says the guys aren't much help anyway for breastfeeding babies (I think this is inaccurate?) I want to have a more inclusive experience and honestly have difficulty picturing what that looks like.

Lastly, thx for food ideas  :) Going to try bedside bananas and bottled smoothie/protein shakes for the fridge.
  • @bri5555 I personally disagree with the whole "guys don't help during the motn/breastfeeding babies". My DH would wake up to change DD and then bring her back to me. I know every guy is different but I wouldn't set yourself up with the thought that it has to be all on you.
  • Thx, and of course!, they can help with changing! I like that thought. It kind of escaped me, lol. I'll go ahead and blame pregnancy brain for not thinking of it. :/

I'm the most hungry at night and I find eating Greek yogurt (or something else protein packed) before bed helps.

Sounds like you two need to discuss each of your expectations with each other. You can't expect him to know you want him to jump in and help if you don't tell him, just like he can't expect you to do xyz on your own if he doesn't tell you.

I BFd DD and my husband was a good help the first month or so. I would feed and change the baby then he would walk the halls with her until she fell back asleep (cranky baby). When we got to the point that she was going back to sleep immediately after feeding then it was all on me for middle of the night stuff. I didn't see the point of waking him to change her when I was already awake feeding her. Two exhausted people is unnecessary. He definitely picked up slack elsewhere (house work).

  • I pumped so hubby could bottle feed some nights so I could get a few hours a uninterrupted sleep..highly recommend!
  • I totally agree with the pumping and giving a bottle for hubby. I did not the first time and it left DH feeling like his help was unneeded during the night. Once she stopped feeding at night it was hard to get him to get up and help.

This is time around there will be bottles for DD#2 - start them early!

  • With my first, I had to pump and feed (trouble breastfeeding and multiple allergies that made it hard to find a formula)  I would try to latch her first and he would top her off with the bottle while I pumped the next one.  Once I was only breastfeeding and not pumping anymore, I also used to lay in bed and pretend to still be asleep untIL he changed her and brought her to me.
