Tuesday (Sleep) Trouble

My last BMB, which was only five months ago, had a regular insomnia discussion for people who were up in the middle of the night.  I thought I'd see whether anyone was suffering with the same issue.  My last pregnancy, I got about 3-and-a-half hours of sleep per night.  It's about 5am here, and I'm laying in bed with my husband snoring on one side and my daughter in her crib on the other.  I haven't slept a wink yet.  It's going to be a long 34 weeks.  Maybe we can keep each other company :-)

Re: Tuesday (Sleep) Trouble

  • Insomnia is a pretty common symptom on this board, so I think this is a great idea!

  • Oh my goodness I wish I had fatigue. I am like you- up all night. I did take unison because my PGAL brain works overtime at night and my heart starts racing.

  • We're all going to get to know each other preeeetttty well in the middle of the night lol. I never sleep anymore. It's so depressing.
My insomnia is paired with Restless Leg Syndrome, so that's SUPER fun :)
  • I wish I had realized this thread was up last night when I woke up at the usual ungodly hour.

Does anyone here use meditation apps to fall asleep? Do they help? Last night I considered going to sleep on the couch so I could listen to stuff without disturbing DH. But the couch is so uncomfortable that it needs to be worth it, haha.
  • @camomile_june I actually prefer our couch to our bed, lol. I've never tried meditation apps, but I will listen to podcasts sometimes to help me fall asleep. It helps 60% of the time.

YAY this is a thread I have been waiting for! I am a night shifter, and am ALWAYS here at night! I do suffer from insomnia, but of course mine is during the middle of the day when it is bright/sunny/warm!

@camomile_June I have not used meditation apps, but I do use "fan" apps that are white noise. If ever I need to listen to something in bed without disturbing DH, I use my ear buds! This way I can stay in bed, but not bother him!

  • @Mandayno I swing shifts and have insomnia so I just feel like I never sleep at this point!

  • Well, I got 5 hours of sleep last night. Woke up about 1000 times and then gave up at 5:30am.  Oy.

@breezybee My daughter and I both have this weird thing where we lift our legs up and thump them down heavily.  She was doing it with both legs at once, but finally stopped doing it so much a few days ago.  My husband claims that I've done it in my sleep for as long as my he's known me.

@camomile_june We listen to science fiction novels and short stories to go to sleep.

Last night, I was so tired that I did manage to get some sleep.  Unfortunately, that meant that when my daughter cried during the night, I just fed her a little and went back to bed.  Then I woke up this morning to a leaky poop diaper.

  • @francisD. We had a leaky poopy diaper too. You did more than I did since you fed her. DS woke at 5 and told my husband I wasn't getting up that early. He mumbled and rolled over back to sleep. Found out when we got up for the day why DS had complained. He hadn't complained too long so we didn't think anything of it.
  • @francisD. ooh, what kind of SciFi stories (I've run out of appealing options), and how do you listen/where do you find them?

@camomile_june We usually download an audiobook from the library, and since we're listening to it to fall asleep, I'm not too picky about what we choose.  Right now we're listening to stories read by amateurs for free on LibraVox, a place to download free stuff online.  On the library website it's hard to get exactly what you want without waiting for it, but if you're interested in my favorites, I like Octavia Butler and Larry Niven as authors.

  • @francisD. Thanks a lot, I'll check them out!
  • This is me, too! I wake up every few hours and then can't go back to sleep early in the morning. It's not the type of insomnia I'm used to
  • @breezybee  Have you always had RLS? I'm just curious because I have it sporadically normally but when I was pregnant with DD it eventually became unbearable
  • @jlemons-2 No, I haven't always had it. It just started with this pregnancy. Lucky me!
I read that Benadryl could make it worse, so I stopped taking that, and I also read that eating a banana before bed can help. I tried that, and it did help a little.
My doctor emailed me yesterday to let me know that I could take Unisom. I did that last night and I finally slept pretty well. Like 5 hours :) But I still can't sleep with my husband - he snores like a BEAR. I'm hoping to get used to this and get back into my bed with him. I don't like sleeping by myself!
  • The insomnia is REAL tonight!!!! I just started trying Unisom after talking to on even! I'm off work tonight and tried going to bed with DH, three hours later WIDE AWAKE!! Sooooooo frustrating! At least it's preparing me for when the little one comes  :D

  • @Mandayno the first time I was pregnant, I felt pretty manic because of sleep loss, but I didn't feel sleepy.  Then, when the baby came, all of a sudden I was capable of sleeping for nine hours a day, but wasn't allowed to do so.  It was a pretty cruel irony that I hope won't happen to you!

  • @mandayno the struggle is real!  Hope you finally got a little shut eye in :)

In other news - holy crap, I slept alllllll night last night from 11pm until 6:15am. I only woke up once at 4:15am. Hallelujah!!!  This is the first time I haven't had to move into another room in the middle of the night to sleep since I going out I was KTFU. Dreams can come true, ladies.
  • Wide awake here. I've been taking unisom (and it's been helping for once!), but I skipped it tonight because we have a very sick baby and I didn't want to not be able to wake up for her. Now I'm awake and miserable.

  • @vvitchhazel I just started the Unisom yesterday. No luck yesterday but I'm not giving up!! I had so much bloat and indigestion yesterday I think it just trumped the Unisom. I hope you have good luck with it!!

@FrancisD. There is definitely irony in that!!!

  • I'm only first trimester at 5w.. I work 80 hours and usually struggle to stay up past 8 pm.. Now I'm not sure why but I can't sleep until midnight... Maybe I'm just nervous after my loss in 2014? I thought you're supposed to be tired first trimester
  • @jackiesmom324 That's the problem... Constantly exhausted, but it's hard falling or staying asleep.

  • I tried going for a long walk w hubby and had him read to me before bed.. I think it worked but I still woke up at 1am then 7 a bit at least I got to bed at 11 rather than one.. I'm starting to worry that its anxiety masquerading as insomnia
  • Is anyone else able to fall asleep just fine, but as soon as you have to get up to pee it's impossible to fall back asleep?!?
