Severe yeast infection?

I hope this is allowed. Sorry, it's about to get gross. Don't read if you have a sensitive stomach! I guess, who doesn't during pregnancy, haha. Anyway. Have any of you struggled with a really severe yeast infection? I have what must be one right now. It's so bad that my vaginal lips are swollen and itchy and I even have little white itchy bumps (that I think might be enlarged follicles). I have white to light yellow discharge. I started taking Monistat 7 two days ago but haven't really noticed any improvement yet. It is so uncomfortable! My husband and I are gone a lot (he drives a semi truck and I go with him) so I can't go to the doctor for a few days. They did tell me to use Monistat, though.

I am just looking to see if anyone has had a similar experience? I need to know that this is going to get better soon! It's driving me nuts! Also, I'm married, so it's for sure not a STD.

Any input?

Re: Severe yeast infection?

  • I know bacterial vaginosis is common during pregnancy and can mirror the symptoms of a yeast infection. I would get to a doctor as soon as you can because vaginosis requires different treatment than a yeast infection. Hang in there! I had them with my first pregnancy and they are no fun!

  • @OliveOyl2014 I definitely will go to the doctor when I get home if it's not getting any better! Thanks.

  • I had a sever yeast infection + bacteria infection my last pregnancy which in one word SUCKED!  Get to your doctor asap, they will be able to get you a RX for stuff that will knock it out and relieve all your symptoms quicker than anything OTC.

I had one early early on in this pregnancy and monostat did nothing except burn. My doc gave me a prescription version that goes up there (we decided on that vs the pill version bc the pill is systemic and the cream is localized .... and they're both level c drugs during pregnancy so we opted for local). It cleared up quickly with that and didn't have any of the awful burning that the monostat caused. I'd see if you can't get to the doc. Urgent care will treat but only based on visual observations, at least in my area they won't do an culture to confirm but my doc does.

  • This cream is amazing and has been a lifesaver. A little goes a long way. REPARA Antifungal Cream Miconazole Nitrate 2% Cream, 5 oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BRYF5J4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_AlN7ybG6HPFRY

With all the extra discharge and moisture it's hard to keep super clean. At the end of my last pregnancy I got yeast infections all the time. A little cream before going to bed and I felt a million times better in the morning.

  • I called my doctor and made an appointment for this Friday (the soonest I will be able to get in). I think it might not be a yeast infection and might be bacterial, because It's all red and irritated down there...I even have blisters. This is only since I used Monistat. Not sure what's going on.

  • @australianshepherdlover aw hun, I really hope you feel better soon. That sounds so painful and uncomfortable

Google  search suggests you up your intake of yogurt (probiotics) , if you can try that, I would give it a shot :( it could help your natural bacteria fight off whatever is causing an issue.

  • @VLillyV thanks. It is super uncomfortable! Not to mention scary looking. It's freaking me out. I will have to try to get some yogurt!

I completely second what @VLillyV said about probiotics. I had frequent yeast infections during all my pregnancies. This pregnancy, I have been taking prenatal prebiotic capsules and haven't had any issues yet. (Fingers crossed it stays this way because I completely understand your misery)
  • I went to the doctor today and she said that she has never seen anything quite like it! I am super swollen down there and have blisters and sores. She said it doesn't look at all like an STD (not that I was super worried about that) so she didn't test for herpes or anything. She took a culture but I won't get it back until Monday. Ugh. Seems so far away. I'm in so much pain that I was crying this morning. My doctor thinks it might be a super bad yeast infection. She hopes it will calm down some on it's own over the weekend. I hope so, too! I can't wait until this nasty infection is gone!

I will update when I get the results.

@australianshepherdlover ugh, really hopes it calms down and goes away before then... sounds horribly painful :(
  • Oh wow girl that sounds so painful! Hope you get relief soon!
  • She didn't give you some cream to slather all over that swollen mess?!

  • That's great you're feeling better. When I had the burning from the monostat (waaaaay less of a reaction than yours sounds) my gyn said that many women react badly to it, frequently enough that she really doesn't recommend it as it can be far more uncomfortable than the yeast infection itself. So crazy.
  • Thanks everyone, I am feeling a lot better and my doctor wasn't worried about it affecting the baby, so hopefully the little one is fine in there :)

@lovehorse77 Really?? I hadn't heard of anyone having reactions anything like this to Monistat until I did and looked it up online! My doctor said she had never seen anything like it before. But that she had heard of people having reactions like that, mine was just really severe. Just so glad that I am finally not in pain anymore!

  • I'm so glad you're feeling better! Sounds like it was awful :-(
  • Thanks! Me too. It was not fun :(
