Okay, since Hollygolightly, and mrsmarygs too, and others I'm sure, have put so much hard work into our spreadsheet and it keeps getting organized wrong, messed up, etc. should we let her lock it for editing so she can be the sole editor? Anyone who would like to be able to edit can message her their email and she will add them. This will be a simple yes or no poll, if you'd like to add a different option feel free to comment.

Re: Spreadsheet Poll

  • I think May and April did this to their spreadsheets, because one of them had a drive-by poster who got mad and literally deleted the entire thing.

  • @mrsmarygs oh wow, that would be horrible! I know you guys have worked really hard to keep it up, all the updates and moving the ghosters, the pie charts and adding the sex of the babies. I would hate to see a drive by ruin that out of spite. Also I feel like we're far enough along we don't have people wanting to be added in hoardes anymore. Most people just intro and disappear. Our regulars are pretty established.
  • Go ahead and lock it away!
  • @mrsmarygs Why are people so crazy?!

With google files you can always go back and "revert" to an old version, so all the data wouldn't be gone forever, it's just stupid and annoying to have to deal with. Having said that, I vote to lock it up!

I have no idea how this stuff works, so that's good to know!
  • Does Google docs have a track changes option like Microsoft Office? If so you can make leave the document open but have only 1 person / group of people as the change approver.

I am also on team lock it up.
  • I don't think it's going to sway drastically at this point lol! 30+ votes, wow!

Not that I have seen... I have the option to let anyone with the link edit it, or just see it. If it's on view only, I can share it with people to edit it with their email address.

I'm not sure about Sheets, but Docs does
allow for something like "track changes." In the top right there is a button that defaults to "editing" but you can switch that to "suggestions" (or something like that--there is text explaining what the different settings do). I use it for making minor changes to my students' work that they can see, especially their vocab sentences where they need to add a preposition or have used a new word as the wrong part of speech.

I think these might be different types of "track changes". The google docs one is like an editing tool that literally tracks changes, so if you delete something, for example, it doesn't actually delete it, it just crosses a line through it, literally like you're editing on paper.  I'm not familiar with the Microsoft Office one, but by the term "change approver" it sounds like the edits are sent as suggestions to the person/group overseeing it to approve or deny the change, and the change wouldn't actually show up until the approvers approved it, so it's not so much a "change tracker" but a "change delayer". But like I said, I'm not familiar with the M.O. one, so I might just be misunderstanding the wording.

You are right that there are differences. I think it looks different in different versions of Microsoft Word too. And I don't think the Google version would be great for this spreadsheet anyway, even if it does work within Sheets, since the purpose of the spreadsheet is quite different from a document where you might want to track changes.
