TTC after 35

Older dads -

My amazing DH just turned 41 and we are trying for our first ,,, I know he has some concerns regarding being an "older" father- although he wants a baby he goes back and forth feeling like he is too old
May I ask, anyone else's OH over 40 and struggling with this?

Re: Older dads -

  • My DH just turned 41 in December when we were pregnant with our loss -  He doesn't struggle with it though I guess cause maybe he still feels young.

  • I'm 42-1/2 and DH is turning 45 this summer. We feel old sometimes but babies keep us young too we say! He was 41 when we had DD. I like to think we offer a little more stability and life knowledge that you just can't "rush."  ;)

@Momifbysea I just told DH the same thing yesterday - a baby will keep us young

DH turned 41 the day before we lost our son last week...I think that experience changed a lot for him and he is much more comfortable with his age and starting a family now .... but I know he worries about being able to keep up...I point out there are people in their 70's that still run marathons ...it's all about how you treat your body

  • I couldn't agree more! I was just talking with my coworker who is 70 and gorgeous and more toned than me, she is such a role model for health! Age is just a number, to a degree...
  • I'm so sorry for your loss :(

My DH just turned 42 yesterday.  We feel somewhat behind our friends, but only some of them.  We went to the wedding of one DH's college friends this past weekend. The bride (his friend) is his age (maybe 41) and is due in August.  I sat next to their other college friend of the same year who is about halfway through her pregnancy (though not quite able to enjoy it as she acknowledged all the time left for something to go wrong :( ).  I don't know the details of their journeys but this encouraged me since we were due yesterday (and are still not knocked up).

I think where you live may contribute one way or another.  I grew up in central CA where it's a lot more rural and people tend to get married and have kids quite young (sometimes right after high school - also my county and the neighboring one often competed for highest tee pregnancy rate in the country - evidence of nothing to do but...each other, apparently).  But having been in Los Angeles for the last 22 years, it's really normal for men not to get married till 40 (much to the chagrin of single ladies).

DH marathons and has friends in their 70s who still run marathons - I agree that how you take care of yourself makes all the difference. The canyoneering guide on our honeymoon last year commented that my DH has the energy of a 15 year old boy though - I'm the one who's a little concerned about burning out chasing a little one around at this age!

Im 38 and DH is 48. We are trying for #3. He has had some concerns this go around about his age...like is it selfish that he will be 70 when the baby is 20, and so on. Ive got my own concerns, but DH has really been the one leading the discussion for a third child.

    My kids are 10 & 8.
