Baby Names

Haven Maria

Down to the wire in finalizing baby names as we are due in 1 week! This is the name for a baby girl we have chosen after discussing just about every other name in the world.. we have found it really hard to fall in love with and agree on a girls name. We already have two boys named Isaac and Levi and just could not commit to any other typical biblical/Hebrew girls names.. we like haven for a unique/spiritual name and I love how feminine soft and pretty it sounds.. problem is this name seems to be either love it or hate it with people and it makes me nervous how well it will be received.. wanted to check the consensus on this board. Maria as a middle name is a definite and not changing and it eliminates a lot of first names ending in -a because of the flow. Opinions? Thoughts? Sorry for the long post!!

Re: Haven Maria

  • I dont like it at all!
Maria is so much better for a first name.........and if you must, Maria Haven
  • I like Haven as a first name. It reminds me of my niece's name, Hazel. If you like it, use it. It doesn't matter what other people think. I do agree that Maria Haven is nice, too. Good luck!

  • I also like Maria much better but Haven is fine.

  • It kinda sounds like a boat name or harbor.

Maria is my mother in laws first name so we definitely want to use it but not as a first name for our daughter- she's also the primary caregiver for my kids so I think it would be weird to have it the same... can I ask what you don't like about it? Personal preference or is it something I'm just not seeing? @saham07

It actually can mean sea port if you take it as a Dutch or Swedish word I believe- which I am ok with because we live by the beach and love anything nautical so that I can live with ;)
  • I know a Haven. The name suits her perfectly - spunky, sweet, feminine and pretty. Haven Maria flows well enough and goes with your boys' names without being too "matchy".
  • I don't love Haven but wouldn't say I dislike it.  I have only heard it on Jessica Alba's daughter and a 15 year old boy.  It is more feminine to me.
  • I really like Haven. I think it's a beautiful choice.

Thank you! Can I ask how old she is? One thing I've heard multiple times about this name is concern about it not aging well?

It just sounds very immature to me. Like a forever 4 year old.

I've heard that a couple times from people but funny enough for me I only have ever heard that name on an adult so I guess that's why I never saw it that way.. thanks for your input though!
  • I just really dislike Haven as a human name. All I can think is like a safe haven from something and I can't picture it in a professional setting. It reminds me of a name of something more in an entertainment setting. Like a stage name someone would use.

I can understand that.. I think because it's so uncommon.. that's what my husband loves about it  though and that's my hesitation about it.. I really like the way it sounds but it's hard for me to overcome everyone else's perception about it.. we just don't want another top 10 name that everyone else has.. and we actually picked it from a verse in psalms about God being our safe haven... I wish I could just commit- it's so hard!

I think I've read It like 4 times lol... I actually like a lot of other names for girls but it's nearly impossible to get my husband to agree on anything... that's why when he loved haven from the get go I had to hold on to it lol
  • love maria

Gotten that a lot- what is it about it you don't like? Any other suggestions that go with Isaac and Levi and sound good with maria in the middle?

maybe you should Google Haven and see. I just feel like it sounds like it could be rough to deal with during the teenage and dating years.

Either a forever 4 year old or a porn star?! I'm so confused how this name can trigger those same images in people's heads lol... i really want to love this name.. I wish I could either just block out the negative opinions or understand them and find something better!! Thank you for the suggestions.. they are definitely on the right track for being unique but I can't say I like any of them :/
  • I think it's pretty. Only drawback for me is that it reminds me of 'Ave Maria' the song, but the song is beautiful so why not!
  • Everyone sees this pronounced like "hay-vin" and not "have-in" right?

    So. Here's a suggestion.

Tell your h Haven isn't happening so he better come up with another name to love. There really isn't anything wrong with the name, (and quite honestly, every name will have at least someone who doesn't like/thinks poorly of it) but if you are having doubts it isn't fair to you for your husband to not consider other names. Her middle name is going to be after his mom, she gets his last name, where the fuck are you being represented here?

And if in the end, if you still don't love any other name, you can go back to Haven. It just sounds like he won't compromise unless you force him too.
I like haven too. I just am more influenced by other peoples opinions than he is. The first time I mentioned this name on a forum I got some entice feedback so it made me search deeper for how the majority feels about this name and honestly it's like 50/50, some people love it and some hate it.. I fall in the love it category but I guess I'm just trying to get reassurance that it's not going to be terrible if i go with it anyway despite half the people I mention it to not liking it.. I definitely don't feel forced by my husband. My side of the family is represented in both my sons names and I had a lot of input there.. I think you are right though that every name is going to find fault with someone.. it's our last baby and first girl so I'm probably just feeling the pressure more to make it perfect. Thanks for the response :)

  • I don't like Haven, but I don't hate it either.  I think it just sounds trendy and like you're trying to be hip (not saying that you are, that's just the impression I get from the name itself).  It also reminds me of the show on Syfy of the same name.  It does sound beautiful paired with Maria, though.  Other ideas for you:

Well, my first thought was "stage name" and I should have said that because that is what you asked for, but I didnt want to be super negative. But...I feel like a 4 year old (and younger) can easily pull off this name, but as she gets older, in MY opinion, it could get harder to carry off. ........I get the same vibe off of any name that represents a kind of euphoric feeling or place.( Destiny, Mystique, Neaveh). She is your daughter and please name her the name that YOU love :)

Thank you for your honesty. I hope it's not really in the same category as mystique lol I definitely don't see it that way but it does give me something to think about if others do! Still open to spiritual/biblical suggestions from anyone that goes well with maria! Haven't found one I liked as much as Haven yet :)
  • Haven is kind of just meh for me- not a bit side eye, but I don't love it either. I think of Jessica Alba's daughter.

Actually yes I really love that name... we were both concerned about pronunciation issues though.. I see it like "say-la", my husband sees it like "sell-uh".. and others I've talked to say "see-la".. I don't know which is right.. also I wondered if Selah maria is too rhyme-y? What do you think?

    See-la.

its a bit rhymey but it's first name middle name so it's not a huge deal and meaning is more important than flow. Our friend has a daughter named Selah and they get a lot of compliments.

Thanks for your help- I think having the first name represent something spiritual/biblical is most important to us rather than uniqueness but we definitely don't want a mainstream name.. unfortunately nothing on this list is quite our style but I definitely appreciate the effort especially in thinking of the middle name to go with it because that's certain!

  • It's not a name I love, but honestly, once you hold that precious baby in your arms, people will stop telling you they don't like the name and she will just become Haven. So, try to put all this in perspective. I do know one other Haven, a child who is about 5 years old, so other people are using it. The Haven I know has two younger sisters: Bristol and Paisley. Have you considered Eden, Ava, Aviana, Eva, Evelyn or Hayden?

Thank you that is helpful.. I'm the type of person that likes to finalize the name before the baby comes (I did with her brothers) but in this case I might just need to hold her and make sure it feels right.. Eden was a contender at one point until someone close to us named their cat Eden lol.. and we know both an Evelyn and Hayden.. the ones that end in a don't flow well with maria :/ if we could use Marie it would open up a whole new world but we want to honor his mom with her exact name lol.. thank you so much

By all means, if you are using Maria to honor his mom, use Maria! I hate it when people say they are honoring someone and then use some other version. One other thing I will throw out there: a friend of mine (she's 47 now) is named Maria Pilar and I have always thought it is the most beautiful name. I know Haven and Pilar are different, but I just wanted to throw it out there.
