  • I was wondering where this was but was too afraid to start it.

My bitch: my dog has a torn ACL I'm pretty sure. We have two dogs and this will be our 4th out of the two dogs we've had to repair (they don't heal on their own). It costs about $3k. DH didn't want to acknowledge it in March when we first suspected. Granted we just repaired one on our other dog in February so... But now we're getting close to the baby being born and it's like we need to get these dogs in order before there's a baby! Oy!

  • Sorry about your dog, @jayandaplus! That's an expensive fix. Do you have breeds that are prone to ACL issues? That's a lot of bad luck either way.

We're dealing with eye issues with our pup, which is much less expensive, but it's time consuming to have to take off work and fit it in around doctors' appointments, trying to move, and DH's job being crazy busy. Anything for my dog, though.

I feel for you. We have 2 dogs which means 4 knees and we have paid for 4 TPLOs. The cost is one thing and then the recovery/rehab is such a PITA. I remember trying to keep the dogs separate so one wouldn't run or jump and the icing and the therapy walks... ugh. That would be really hard in the last few weeks of pregnancy let alone with a newborn, could you manage things with Rimadyl for a bit until its a better time?

With the final surgery we ended up doing she actually walked pretty well and wasn't in much pain so it also slipped past the radar for a bit, we had her on the meds though. Also I know you are a pro at this by now but have you looked into vet schools? 3 out of our 4 were done at VA Tech and it was a lot cheaper than the $3k specialty places in town, well worth a 2 hour drive.

  • DS is in allergy overload.  Post nasal drip had him coughing all night.  At 3 am, I decided to sit in the recliner so he could be upright and get some rest, which he did. I'm exhausted and my back is killing me.

@sweaterboots, I mailed by taxes on Saturday. On top of my $13k to Uncle Sam, I had to make my first quarter payment for 2017, and max out my IRA contribution.  Huge hit to my bank account and nothing hanging in my closet, new bling, or fabulous vacation to show for it.  :s

@jayandaplus and @kns1988 sorry about the dog issues.  Dogs are a lot like kids in so many ways.
  • @ChristinaWild @clebl24 this was my first year filing as a freelancer. I was naive and thought all the 10-99 forms meant I was still withholding, so I didn't make quarterly payments. NOPE! $9,000 later plus my first quarterly payment due today. Live and learn right?  :s At least I'll be prepared next year by prepaying quarterly. Le sigh...
    <a href="http://www.thebump.com/?utm_source=ticker&utm_medium=HTML&utm_campaign=tickers" title="Pregnancy"><img src="http://global.thebump.com/tickers/tt1d48bc" alt=" Pregnancy Ticker" border="0"  /></a>
  • @sweaterboots, make sure you are making realistic quarterly payments.  We paid what our CPA said to pay for each quarter of 2016 and still owed $13k.  In the whole scheme of things, it's not a bad problem to have...we make decent money, but we certainly weren't expecting to owe that much.
  • Oh Lordy. Can you overpay your quarterlies or do you have to pay what the voucher says?? My husband owed nothing because his withholding was great, this was literally all me. We filed jointly but my tax guy said if I had payed quarterly we might owe like $200 federal. Yeeeesh.
    <a href="http://www.thebump.com/?utm_source=ticker&utm_medium=HTML&utm_campaign=tickers" title="Pregnancy"><img src="http://global.thebump.com/tickers/tt1d48bc" alt=" Pregnancy Ticker" border="0"  /></a>
  • @sweaterboots it's my understanding that you can pay however much you want for your quarterlies. Its the same as a W-2 employee withholding the maximum - you may get a refund at the end of the year if you overpay. If your H is "traditionally" employed (he gets a W2 and his employer pays FICA, etc) it may help to have him file a 0 on his W4 so that they essentially with-hold the max from his paycheck. And/or he can withhold extra from each check on top of that. This would obviously help most if you file jointly!
  • @sweaterboots, you can pay more than the voucher.  It is just an estimate.  For example, if I get a year end bonus, then my last payment will be more than the voucher estimate.
  • @sweaterboots - ouch! I feel you. I made a $14k payment and want to CRY. (And then cry more when I think about doing this three more times before next April)

We've got first world problems in our house with taxes this year. The company I work for sold all of its assets, and I had interest in the company so I got a piece of the profits. However, we only got 1/4 of our profit in cash and the rest in stock. The stocks had to be held for 90 days after closing as part of the sales agreement and the price has absolutely TANKED. So basically the entire cash portion that we received is going to Uncle Sam, with no idea of when/if we'll see a profit on the stock.

Combining all of that with the fact that the company who purchased the asset has been inundating me with requests today, and I'm ready to start maternity leave. "Sorry, can't help you. Should have asked some time over the last 4 months when I was available."

  • Add me to the tax bitch list! We were pretty sure we would owe because a good chunk of my income is untaxed (stipend plus some consulting work), but we were hoping that it wouldn't be too much. Nah. AND in the process of figuring out why we owed so much more this year, we realized that there was a mistake in last year's taxes and now we have to pay THAT as well! I don't blame our preparer (we go through our credit union and they are the best), but rather the extremely convoluted way that my university reports tuition vs. fees vs. stipends vs. everything else. Big picture: It's fine, we have the $ and were prepared to owe, H keeps talking about how it's our civic duty/it's because I made that money in the first place/he wouldn't want to get penalized for last year's mistake, etc. But I still feel like bitching a bit!
  • Thank you all for the advice! No one comes and holds your hand when you make the switch from traditional full time employment to freelancing. @ShadeofGreen816 Do you think husband should still file as a zero even if we have a new baby as a dependent?

@ChristinaWild @L1C4gal I feel you, tax day sucks so hard and we are particularly cursed to have it come immediately before the costly and emotionally draining experience of giving birth. If it weren't for our wedding anniversary (and being excited for our son's arrival) it'd be the worst time of year!
    <a href="http://www.thebump.com/?utm_source=ticker&utm_medium=HTML&utm_campaign=tickers" title="Pregnancy"><img src="http://global.thebump.com/tickers/tt1d48bc" alt=" Pregnancy Ticker" border="0"  /></a>
  • @sweaterboots it's a personal decision. Filing 0 will basically help with refund or any liability come tax time next year. It's essentially the most conservative. But some people don't like "letting the government have their money interest free all year." Filing an exemption for new baby just withholds a little less so you get more money each week/month etc. but you may get a smaller refund or owe more at the end of the year. In the end the money is all the same, it's just whether you'd pay it slowly over the year or all at once come tax time.
  • It depends on what bracket you fall into but even claiming 0 your standard withholding may not be enough. There are online calculators you can find online that help determine the appropriate level of withholding.

We both claim 0 and I pay and extra $100 a pay period but we still owed this year, taxes are fun.

@WombThereItIs makes a good point. Even more so with your freelancing/self employment income. Taxes are super fun. This was our first year both on W-2 income and I was excited to not owe and hopefully get a refund. But I screwed up my W4 this year and didn't withhold enough. Such a disappointment!
  • @kns1988 yes! Sorry about your dog too.
@WombThereItIs Exactly! We've looked at vet schools before, maybe I need to again. I'm thinking it'd be easier to do it now rather than wait... I don't know. I feel like it's always something!
  • @MrsFreeman2010 student loans are the worst!!! Plus daycare.. the % deduction is like a 1/10th of what is actually paid!!!
I could not agree more!! Our deduction covered like 1 month of childcare. HUGE help, thanks!

  • @MrsFreeman2010 - Yes - student loans are awful because you can't really claim anything about them!

I am also on the tax B-fest but for different reasons. Actually I've been in a pretty cranky mood today for no real reason other than I'm 38 weeks pregnant and therefore uncomfortable and tired! I went to the grocery store this morning and two people ticked me off even though their comments/behavior would normally not bother me at all. I also went off on DH about taxes because he hasn't finished them and I feel like he wants me to help with them. I already do all the housework and 95% of the childcare and I'm trying to get our house ready for when this baby comes in not-so-many days from now so I don't want to add anything else to my plate but because he's slacked, now he needs help. In his defense, I was the one to do them last year and I feel like now I should apologize because I was probably harsher than I needed to be and I feel like I've been taking out a lot on him lately.

  • All right, I've gotta complain about work too. So, I go to lunch at 12 every day, well almost every day, like I did today. I went a few minutes before to go pee and get a drink before coming back to our office to heat up my lunch. I come back and the microwave is being used, no big deal I'll wait, it could be someone from the other office and not my coworker who doesn't go to lunch until 12:30...wrong! It was her! She knows I got at 12, but decided to heat up her lunch right at 12 so that when I got back I'm already like 10 minutes into my lunch. Irritating! She's not even eating it yet! She'll take it with her so it doesn't cut into her 30 minutes. I think this is a bigger deal to me at the moment 1, because a pregnant girls gotta eat and 2, I have been up since 4:30 this morning...not in the mood.
